Project description:Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems can improve the safety and reliability of structures, reduce maintenance costs, and extend service life. Research on concrete SHMs using piezoelectric-based smart aggregates have reached great achievements. However, the newly developed techniques have not been widely applied in practical engineering, largely due to the wiring problems associated with large-scale structural health monitoring. The cumbersome wiring requires much material and labor work, and more importantly, the associated maintenance work is also very heavy. Targeting a practical large scale concrete crack detection (CCD) application, a smart aggregates-based wireless sensor network system is proposed for the CCD application. The developed CCD system uses Zigbee 802.15.4 protocols, and is able to perform dynamic stress monitoring, structural impact capturing, and internal crack detection. The system has been experimentally validated, and the experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed system. This work provides important support for practical CCD applications using wireless smart aggregates.

Project description:Energy efficiency is an issue that is currently gaining relevance, high electricity demands worldwide generate a negative impact on the planet caused by the natural depletion of resources associated with production processes. In this regard, the technologies associated with the Internet of Things (IoT) are considered as a tool to optimize processes and resources through the monitoring of variables. In this context, this work proposes a low-cost electronic system with IoT architecture used in the monitoring of electrical variables, this becomes a support tool in the estimation of energy consumption in internal distribution electrical circuits of homes or small industries. This device generates information to recognize consumption patterns and load balances per electrical phase, contains two hardware modules and a software user interface. The first is an electronic node that includes a high-performance polyphase meter based on the Atmel M90E32AS chip, which is controlled by an ESP32 chip, for wireless communication is used a Radio Frequency (RF) module in the 915 MHz band and LoRa protocol based on the Semtech SX1278 transceiver, this node is able to measure and transmit variables such as current, voltage, active energy, reactive energy, power factor and other electrical variables in circuits of up to three phases. For the study, a calibration process was carried out in an accredited laboratory (Metrex S.A. in Colombia), then tests were performed by monitoring a three-phase 110V electrical circuit in a small factory, with the information generated it was possible to identify consumption patterns over a period of seven consecutive days, important data such as times when energy is wasted due to improper use of loads connected to the network, electric stoves, computer equipment turned on during non-working hours are examples of the results obtained.

Project description:The increasing deployment and exploitation of distributed renewable energy source (DRES) units and battery energy storage systems (BESS) in DC microgrids lead to a promising research field currently. Individual DRES and BESS controllers can operate as grid-forming (GFM) or grid-feeding (GFE) units independently, depending on the microgrid operational requirements. In standalone mode, at least one controller should operate as a GFM unit. In grid-connected mode, all the controllers may operate as GFE units. This article proposes a consensus-based energy management system based upon Model Predictive Control (MPC) for DRES and BESS individual controllers to operate in both configurations (GFM or GFE). Energy management system determines the mode of power flow based on the amount of generated power, load power, solar irradiance, wind speed, rated power of every DG, and state of charge (SOC) of BESS. Based on selection of power flow mode, the role of DRES and BESS individual controllers to operate as GFM or GFE units, is decided. MPC hybrid cost function with auto-tuning weighing factors will enable DRES and BESS converters to switch between GFM and GFE. In this paper, a single hybrid cost function has been proposed for both GFM and GFE. The performance of the proposed energy management system has been validated on an EU low voltage benchmark DC microgrid by MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation and also compared with Proportional Integral (PI) & Sliding Mode Control (SMC) technique. It has been noted that as compared to PI & SMC, MPC technique exhibits settling time of less than 1μsec and 5% overshoot.

Project description:Building structures are subjected to strong earthquakes, which result in lateral collisions between them. Such collisions often cause severe structural damage and exacerbate the seismic hazard risk of building structures during earthquake events. This paper discusses the application of vibration control devices based on negative stiffness inerter damper in single-story adjacent building structures. The dynamic equations of the vibration control system containing different types of negative stiffness inerter damper under seismic excitation are established as a unified model. The H2 norm theory and Monte Carlo pattern search method are used to optimize the design parameters to improve the vibration control performance of the system, and the dynamic characteristics of the system are investigated. The results demonstrate that attaching negative stiffness inerter damper to adjacent building structures can effectively improve the overall seismic capacity reserve of the building and reduce the risk of collision of adjacent building structures; improve the robustness and stability of the system, and better reduce the displacement response of the building structure under seismic excitation. In addition, the potential of NSID-based vibration control devices to convert seismic energy into usable electricity has been investigated.

Project description:COVID-19 is a global threat. Non-pharmaceutical interventions were commonly adopted for COVID-19 prevention and control. However, during stable periods of the pandemic, energy would be inevitably wasted if all interventions were implemented. The study aims to reduce the building energy consumption when meet the demands of epidemic prevention and control under the stable period of COVID-19. Based on the improved Wells-Riley model considering dynamic quanta generation and pulmonary ventilation rate, we established the infection risk - equivalent fresh air volume - energy consumption model to analyze the infection risk and building energy consumption during different seasons and optimized the urban building energy consumption according to the spatio-temporal population distribution. Shopping centers and restaurants contributed the most in urban energy consumption, and if they are closed during the pandemic, the total infection risk would be reduced by 25%-40% and 15%-25% respectively and the urban energy consumption would be reduced by 30%-40% and 13%-20% respectively. If people wore masks in all public indoor environments (exclude restaurants and KTV), the infection risk could be reduced by 60%-70% and the energy consumption could be reduced by 20%-60%. Gyms pose the highest risk for COVID-19 transmission. If the energy consumption kept the same with the current value, after the optimization, infection risk in winter, summer and the transition season could be reduced by 65%, 53% and 60%, respectively. After the optimization, under the condition of R t < 1, the energy consumption in winter, summer, and the transition season could be reduced by 72%, 64%, and 68% respectively.

Project description:Existing swallowing evaluation methods using X-ray or endoscopy are qualitative. The present study develops a swallowing monitoring and assessment system (SMAS) that is nonintrusive and quantitative. The SMAS comprises an ultrasonic Doppler sensor array, a microphone, and an inertial measurement unit to measure ultrasound signals originating only from swallowing activities. Ultrasound measurements were collected for combinations of two viscosity conditions (water and yogurt) and two volume conditions (3 mL and 9 mL) from 24 healthy participants (14 males and 10 females; age = 30.5 ± 7.6 years) with no history of swallowing disorders and were quantified for 1st peak amplitude, 2nd peak amplitude, peak-to-peak (PP) time interval, duration, energy, and proportion of two or more peaks. The peak amplitudes and energy significantly decreased by viscosity and the PP time interval and duration increased by volume. The correlation between the time measures were higher (r = 0.78) than that of the amplitude measures (r = 0.30), and the energy highly correlated with the 1st peak amplitude (r = 0.86). The proportion of two or more peaks varied from 76.8% to 87.9% by viscosity and volume. Further research is needed to examine the concurrent validity and generalizability of the ultrasonic Doppler sensor-based SMAS.

Project description:The speed of insulin absorption after subcutaneous delivery is highly variable. Incorrect assumptions about insulin pharmacokinetics compromise effective glycemic regulation. Our ultimate goal is to develop a system to monitor insulin levels in vivo continuously, allowing pharmacokinetic parameters to be calculated in real time. We hypothesize that a bead-based detection system can be run on a flow-through microfluidic platform to measure insulin in subcutaneous fluid sampled via microdialysis. As a first step in development, we focused on microsphere-based measurement of insulin.Polystyrene microspheres coated with an anti-insulin monoclonal antibody were exposed to insulin-containing solutions, and after addition of a fluorescently labeled anti-insulin monoclonal antibody with a distinct epitope, bead-associated fluorescence was detected by fluorescence microscopy in 96-well plates or in a flow-through, microfluidic platform.The bead detection system in plates had a linear range in buffer for regular human insulin (RHI), insulin lispro, and insulin aspart of 15-1115 µIU/ml, 14-976 µIU/ml, and 25-836 µIU/ml, respectively. Measurement on plasma samples demonstrated proportionality between basal and peak insulin levels similar to the laboratory reference method. Preliminary results in a polydimethylsiloxane-based, flow-through, microfluidic platform showed a strong signal at peak insulin levels.We have developed a microsphere-based system to rapidly measure levels of insulin and insulin analogs. We have further demonstrated proof of concept that this bead detection system can be implemented in a lab-on-a-chip format, which will be further developed and combined with microdialysis for real-time monitoring of insulin in vivo.

Project description:In this paper we present a multi-sensor floating system designed to monitor marine energy parameters, in order to sample wind, wave, and marine current energy resources. For this purpose, a set of dedicated sensors to measure the height and period of the waves, wind, and marine current intensity and direction have been selected and installed in the system. The floating device incorporates wind and marine current turbines for renewable energy self-consumption and to carry out complementary studies on the stability of such a system. The feasibility, safety, sensor communications, and buoy stability of the floating device have been successfully checked in real operating conditions.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic was a watershed event for wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE). It highlighted the inability of existing disease surveillance systems to provide sufficient forewarning to governments on the existing stage and scale of disease spread and underscored the need for an effective early warning signaling system. Recognizing the potentiality of environmental surveillance (ES), in May 2021, COVIDActionCollaborative launched the Precision Health platform. The idea was to leverage ES for equitable mapping of the disease spread in Bengaluru, India and provide early information regarding any inflection in the epidemiological curve of COVID-19. By sampling both networked and non-networked sewage systems in the city, the platform used ES for both equitable and comprehensive surveillance of the population to derive precise information on the existing stage of disease maturity across communities and estimate the scale of the approaching threat. This was in contrast to clinical surveillance, which during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bengaluru excluded a significant proportion of poor and vulnerable communities from its ambit of representation. The article presents the findings of a sense-making tool which the platform developed for interpreting emerging signals from wastewater data to map disease progression and identifying the inflection points in the epidemiological curve. Thus, the platform accurately generated early warning signals on disease escalation and disseminated it to the government and the general public. This information enabled concerned audiences to implement preventive measures in advance and effectively plan their next steps for improved disease management.
