Small molecular logic systems can draw the outlines of objects via edge visualization.

ABSTRACT: The recently-discovered ability of small logical molecules to recognize edges is exploited to achieve outline drawing from binary templates. Outlines of arbitrary curvature, several colours and thicknesses down to 1 mm are drawn in around 30 min or less by employing a common laboratory two-colour ultraviolet lamp. The outlines and the light dose-driven XOR logic with fluorescence output or 'off-on-off' action which is observed in the irradiated regions are modelled by combining foundational principles of photochemistry, acid-base neutralization and diffusion.

Intelligent medical diagnostics via molecular logic.

Project description:In this communication, we describe the integration of microarray sensor technology with logic capability for screening combinations of proteins and DNA in a biological sample. In this system, we have demonstrated the use of a single platform amenable to both protein detection and protein-DNA detection using molecular logic gates. The pattern of protein and DNA inputs results in fluorescence outputs according to a truth table for AND and INHIBIT gates, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of performing medical diagnostics using a logic gate design. One possible application of this technique would be direct screening of various medical conditions that are dependent on combinations of diagnostic markers.

Inference of disease-related molecular logic from systems-based microarray analysis.

Project description:Computational analysis of gene expression data from microarrays has been useful for medical diagnosis and prognosis. The ability to analyze such data at the level of biological modules, rather than individual genes, has been recognized as important for improving our understanding of disease-related pathways. It has proved difficult, however, to infer pathways from microarray data by deriving modules of multiple synergistically interrelated genes, rather than individual genes. Here we propose a systems-based approach called Entropy Minimization and Boolean Parsimony (EMBP) that identifies, directly from gene expression data, modules of genes that are jointly associated with disease. Furthermore, the technique provides insight into the underlying biomolecular logic by inferring a logic function connecting the joint expression levels in a gene module with the outcome of disease. Coupled with biological knowledge, this information can be useful for identifying disease-related pathways, suggesting potential therapeutic approaches for interfering with the functions of such pathways. We present an example providing such gene modules associated with prostate cancer from publicly available gene expression data, and we successfully validate the results on additional independently derived data. Our results indicate a link between prostate cancer and cellular damage from oxidative stress combined with inhibition of apoptotic mechanisms normally triggered by such damage.

Fluorescence microscopy visualization of contacts between objects.

Project description:The area of contact between two objects was detected by using the strong enhancement of the fluorescence of rigidochromic probe molecules attached to one of the surfaces. Confinement of the molecules suppresses nonradiative decay and turns on the fluorescence. The approach is demonstrated by imaging of the contact area of a plastic sphere in contact with a flat glass surface. Our results agree excellently with the prediction of Hertz's classical theory based on elastic deformation.

Logic Modeling in Quantitative Systems Pharmacology.

Project description:Here we present logic modeling as an approach to understand deregulation of signal transduction in disease and to characterize a drug's mode of action. We discuss how to build a logic model from the literature and experimental data and how to analyze the resulting model to obtain insights of relevance for systems pharmacology. Our workflow uses the free tools OmniPath (network reconstruction from the literature), CellNOpt (model fit to experimental data), MaBoSS (model analysis), and Cytoscape (visualization).

Molding and Encoding Carbon Nitride-Containing Edible Oil Liquid Objects via Interfacial Toughening in Waterborne Systems.

Project description:Charge interaction-driven jamming of nanoparticle monolayers at the oil-water interface can be employed as a method to mold liquids into tailored stable 3D liquid objects. Here, 3D liquid objects are fabricated via a combination of biocompatible aqueous poly(vinyl sulfonic acid, sodium salt) solution and a colloidal dispersion of highly fluorescent organo-modified graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) in edible sunflower oil. The as-formed liquid object shows stability in a broad pH range, as well as flexible pathways for efficient exchange of molecules at the liquid-liquid interphase, which allows for photodegradation of rhodamine B at the interface via visible light irradiation that also enables an encoding concept. The g-C3N4-based liquid objects point toward various applications, for example, all-liquid biphasic photocatalysis, artificial compartmentalized systems, liquid-liquid printing, or bioprinting.

ZnO composite nanolayer with mobility edge quantization for multi-value logic transistors.

Project description:A quantum confined transport based on a zinc oxide composite nanolayer that has conducting states with mobility edge quantization is proposed and was applied to develop multi-value logic transistors with stable intermediate states. A composite nanolayer with zinc oxide quantum dots embedded in amorphous zinc oxide domains generated quantized conducting states at the mobility edge, which we refer to as "mobility edge quantization". The unique quantized conducting state effectively restricted the occupied number of carriers due to its low density of states, which enable current saturation. Multi-value logic transistors were realized by applying a hybrid superlattice consisting of zinc oxide composite nanolayers and organic barriers as channels in the transistor. The superlattice channels produced multiple states due to current saturation of the quantized conducting state in the composite nanolayers. Our multi-value transistors exhibited excellent performance characteristics, stable and reliable operation with no current fluctuation, and adjustable multi-level states.

Massively parallel classical logic via coherent dynamics of an ensemble of quantum systems with dispersion in size.

Project description:Quantum parallelism can be implemented on a classical ensemble of discrete level quantum systems. The nanosystems are not quite identical, and the ensemble represents their individual variability. An underlying Lie algebraic theory is developed using the closure of the algebra to demonstrate the parallel information processing at the level of the ensemble. The ensemble is addressed by a sequence of laser pulses. In the Heisenberg picture of quantum dynamics the coherence between the N levels of a given quantum system can be handled as an observable. Thereby there are N 2 logic variables per N level system. This is how massive parallelism is achieved in that there are N 2 potential outputs for a quantum system of N levels. The use of an ensemble allows simultaneous reading of such outputs. Due to size dispersion the expectation values of the observables can differ somewhat from system to system. We show that for a moderate variability of the systems one can average the N 2 expectation values over the ensemble while retaining closure and parallelism. This allows directly propagating in time the ensemble averaged values of the observables. Results of simulations of electronic excitonic dynamics in an ensemble of quantum dot (QD) dimers are presented. The QD size and interdot distance in the dimer are used to parametrize the Hamiltonian. The dimer N levels include local and charge transfer excitons within each dimer. The well-studied physics of semiconducting QDs suggests that the dimer coherences can be probed at room temperature.

Project description:Procedures to provide interventional implantation of a port catheter system into the hepatic artery and adjacent regional chemotherapy of the liver are optimized in the scope of an open, single-arm trial in patients with metastases and cancers confined to the liver. The primary objective is the improvement of indication, implantation procedure, and regional chemotherapy. Secondary objectives are port patency, comparison of complications with a historical collective of patients provided with a surgical hepatic arterial port device (colorectal cancer patients only), progression free and overall survival, efficacy of maintaining regional chemotherapy with 5-FU in combination with systemic treatment in patients with extrahepatic progression, quality of life.

An integrated three-tier trust management framework in mobile edge computing using fuzzy logic.

Project description:Mobile edge computing (MEC) is introduced as part of edge computing paradigm, that exploit cloud computing resources, at a nearer premises to service users. Cloud service users often search for cloud service providers to meet their computational demands. Due to the lack of previous experience between cloud service providers and users, users hold several doubts related to their data security and privacy, job completion and processing performance efficiency of service providers. This paper presents an integrated three-tier trust management framework that evaluates cloud service providers in three main domains: Tier I, which evaluates service provider compliance to the agreed upon service level agreement; Tier II, which computes the processing performance of a service provider based on its number of successful processes; and Tier III, which measures the violations committed by a service provider, per computational interval, during its processing in the MEC network. The three-tier evaluation is performed during Phase I computation. In Phase II, a service provider total trust value and status are gained through the integration of the three tiers using the developed overall trust fuzzy inference system (FIS). The simulation results of Phase I show the service provider trust value in terms of service level agreement compliance, processing performance and measurement of violations independently. This disseminates service provider's points of failure, which enables a service provider to enhance its future performance for the evaluated domains. The Phase II results show the overall trust value and status per service provider after integrating the three tiers using overall trust FIS. The proposed model is distinguished among other models by evaluating different parameters for a service provider.

All-photonic multifunctional molecular logic device.

Project description:Photochromes are photoswitchable, bistable chromophores which, like transistors, can implement binary logic operations. When several photochromes are combined in one molecule, interactions between them such as energy and electron transfer allow design of simple Boolean logic gates and more complex logic devices with all-photonic inputs and outputs. Selective isomerization of individual photochromes can be achieved using light of different wavelengths, and logic outputs can employ absorption and emission properties at different wavelengths, thus allowing a single molecular species to perform several different functions, even simultaneously. Here, we report a molecule consisting of three linked photochromes that can be configured as AND, XOR, INH, half-adder, half-subtractor, multiplexer, demultiplexer, encoder, decoder, keypad lock, and logically reversible transfer gate logic devices, all with a common initial state. The system demonstrates the advantages of light-responsive molecules as multifunctional, reconfigurable nanoscale logic devices that represent an approach to true molecular information processing units.
