Project description:BackgroundMangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) fruit has a unique sweet-sour taste and is rich in beneficial compounds such as xanthones. Mangosteen originally been used in various folk medicines to treat diarrhea, wounds, and fever. More recently, it had been used as a major component in health supplement products for weight loss and for promoting general health. This is perhaps due to its known medicinal benefits, including as anti-oxidant and anti-inflammation. Interestingly, publications related to mangosteen have surged in recent years, suggesting its popularity and usefulness in research laboratories. However, there are still no updated reviews (up to 2018) in this booming research area, particularly on its metabolite composition and medicinal benefits.MethodIn this review, we have covered recent articles within the years of 2016 to 2018 which focus on several aspects including the latest findings on the compound composition of mangosteen fruit as well as its medicinal usages.ResultMangosteen has been vastly used in medicinal areas including in anti-cancer, anti-microbial, and anti-diabetes treatments. Furthermore, we have also described the benefits of mangosteen extract in protecting various human organs such as liver, skin, joint, eye, neuron, bowel, and cardiovascular tissues against disorders and diseases.ConclusionAll in all, this review describes the numerous manipulations of mangosteen extracted compounds in medicinal areas and highlights the current trend of its research. This will be important for future directed research and may allow researchers to tackle the next big challenge in mangosteen study: drug development and human applications.

Project description:Planktonic organic matter forms the base of the marine food web, and its nutrient content (C:N:Porg) governs material and energy fluxes in the ocean. Over Earth history, C:N:Porg had a crucial role in marine metazoan evolution and global biogeochemical dynamics, but the geologic history of C:N:Porg is unknown, and it is often regarded constant at the "Redfield" ratio of ∼106:16:1. We calculated C:N:Porg through Phanerozoic time by including nutrient- and temperature-dependent C:N:Porg parameterizations in a model of the long-timescale biogeochemical cycles. We infer a decrease from high Paleozoic C:Porg and N:Porg to present-day ratios, which stems from a decrease in the global average temperature and an increase in seawater phosphate availability. These changes in the phytoplankton's growth environment were driven by various Phanerozoic events: specifically, the middle to late Paleozoic expansion of land plants and the Triassic breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea, which increased continental weatherability and the fluxes of weathering-derived phosphate to the oceans. The resulting increase in the nutrient content of planktonic organic matter likely impacted the evolution of marine fauna and global biogeochemistry.

Project description:How far-reaching is the influence of the urban area over the mineral composition of the Russula cyanoxantha mushroom? To answer this question, we monitored the metal uptake behavior of this fungus relying on the soil properties. We sampled mushroom and soil from six forests according to an urbanization gradient, and two city parks in Cluj-Napoca (Romania). The elements were quantified using inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The concentrations of some elements differed significantly (p < 0.05) in the samples from the city (0.39 ± 0.35 mg kg-1 for cadmium (Cd), 0.40 ± 0.19 mg kg-1 for chromium (Cr), 69.1 ± 29.9 mg kg-1 for iron (Fe), 10.9 ± 1.3 mg kg-1 for manganese (Mn), 0.76 ± 0.45 mg kg-1 for titanium (Ti)) compared with the samples from the forests (3.15-14.1 mg kg-1 Cd, < 0.18 mg kg-1 for Cr, 22.6-34.5 mg kg-1 for Fe, 15.9-19.1 mg kg-1 for Mn, 0.19-0.36 mg kg-1 for Ti). We observed a definite negative trend in the mineral accumulation potential of this fungus along the urbanization gradient. The fungus turned from a cadmium-accumulator to a cadmium-excluder. This highlights a positive environmental influence of the urbanization over the toxic metal uptake of R. cyanoxantha. The hypothesis, that the urban soil pollution would increase the metal content of the mushroom was disproved. The possible explanation might be the elevated carbonate content of the urban soil, which is known to immobilize the metals in the soil.

Project description:Understanding the genetic variability within a plant species is paramount in implementing a successful breeding program. Spider plant (Gynandropsis gynandra) is an orphan leafy vegetable and an extraordinary source of vitamins, secondary metabolites and minerals, representing an important resource for combatting malnutrition. However, an evaluation of the leaf elemental composition, using a worldwide germplasm collection to inform breeding programs and the species valorization in human nutrition is still lacking. The present study aimed to profile the leaf elemental composition of G. gynandra and depict any potential geographical signature using a collection of 70 advanced lines derived from accessions originating from Asia and Eastern, Southern and West Africa. The collection was grown in a greenhouse using a 9 × 8 alpha lattice design with two replications in 2020 and 2021. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry was used to profile nine minerals contents. A significant difference (p < 0.05) was observed among the lines for all nine minerals. Microelements such as iron, zinc, copper and manganese contents ranged from 12.59-430.72, 16.98-166.58, 19.04-955.71, 5.39-25.10 mg kg-1 dry weight, respectively, while the concentrations of macroelements such as potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium varied in the ranges of 9992.27-49854.23, 8252.80-33681.21, 3633.55-14216.16, 2068.03-12475.60 mg kg-1 dry weight, respectively. Significant and positive correlations were observed between iron and zinc and calcium and magnesium. Zinc, calcium, phosphorus, copper, magnesium, and manganese represented landmark elements in the genotypes. Eastern and Southern African genotypes were clustered together in group 1 with higher phosphorus, copper and zinc contents than Asian and West African lines, which clustered in group 2 and were characterized by higher calcium, magnesium and manganese contents. An additional outstanding group 3 of six genotypes was identified with high iron, zinc, magnesium, manganese and calcium contents and potential candidates for cultivar release. The genotype × year interaction variance was greater than the genotypic variance, which might translate to phenotypic plasticity in the species. Broad-sense heritability ranged from low to high and was element-specific. The present results reveal the leaf minerals diversity in spider plant and represent a baseline for implementing a minerals-based breeding program for human nutrition.

Project description:Despite the importance of calcifications in early detection of breast cancer, and their suggested role in modulating breast cancer cell behaviour, very little detail is known about their chemical composition or how this relates to pathology. We measured the elemental composition of calcifications contained within histological sections of breast tissue biopsies, and related this to both crystallographic parameters measured previously in the same specimens, and to the histopathology report. The Ca:P ratio is of particular interest since this theoretically has potential as a non-invasive aid to diagnosis; this was found to lie in a narrow range similar to bone, with no significant difference between benign and malignant. The Mg:Ca ratio is also of interest due to the observed association of magnesium whitlockite with malignancy. The initially surprising inverse correlation found between whitlockite fraction and magnesium concentration can be explained by the location of the magnesium in calcified tissue. Sodium was also measured, and we discovered a substantial and significant difference in Na:Ca ratio in the apatite phase between benign and malignant specimens. This has potential for revealing malignant changes in the vicinity of a core needle biopsy.

Project description:The metallic elements concentrations of medicinal plants (coriander, dill, Echinacea, lavender, chamomile, mint, and plantain, used for phytopharmaceutical products), cultivated in unpolluted region, were analyzed by neutron activation analysis. The essential nutrients, macro-, micro-, and trace elements (K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Mn, Rb, Sr, and Zn), potentially toxic elements (Al, As, Ba, Co, Sb, Cr, and V), and rare earth elements were monitored and were compared with those presented in the literature. An estimation of their contributions to intake and toxicity for a person was made, which revealed that (a) teas prepared from the examined plants represent useful contribution to the food provided intake of three essential macronutrients (K, Ca, and Mg); (b) the Cu, Mn, Rb, Sr, Zn, and rare earths levels are normal or low; (c) the quantities of As, Ba, Co, Sb, Cr, and V do not represent toxicological concerns; (d) the examination of the estimated Al and Fe quantities recovered in infusions in the conditions of usual daily tea consumption is below the Tolerable Daily Intake values. The strategy of cultivation of medicinal plants in unpolluted areas is efficient and beneficial. However, individual plants ability to concentrate preferentially certain elements suggests controlling the contamination level of raw materials.

Project description:BackgroundTo study the anticancer activity of Plantago major, we assessed the effect of ethanolic, methanolic and acetonic extracts of this plant on HCT-116, SW-480, and HEK-293 cell lines as control.MethodsThe cytotoxic activity, biocompatibility, and toxicity were evaluated by MTT assay, hemolysis, and Artemia salina-LD50 (on mice) tests, respectively. The analysis of the extracts was performed by GC-MS analysis.ResultsThe results showed that all the extracts had the most antiproliferative properties on the HCT-116 cell line. The P. major root extract was more effective than the aerial parts, and IC50 values for ethanolic, methanolic and acetonic root extracts were 405.59, 470.16, and 82.26 µg/mL, respectively on HCT-116 cell line at 72 h. Hemolysis degree of the ethanolic extract of aerial and root parts were approximately 1% at 400 μg/mL.. Using the ethanolic extracts, the Artemia survived every concentration, and no toxicity was observed. One week after the oral administration of different parts of P. major extracts, none of the mice died, even those were administered 2000 mg/kg. The results of GC/MS analysis showed that P. major extracts contain potential anticancer compounds, such as stearic acid (8.61%) in aerial parts of methanolic extract and 1,2- Benzenedicarboxylic acid, mono(2-ethylhexyl)ester (88.07% and 40.63%) in aerial and root parts of acetonic extract of P. major.ConclusionOur findings suggest that the P. major is a source of potential compounds with antiproliferative properties.

Project description:BackgroundSelenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for humans, but its deficiency as well as toxicity affects large number of people worldwide. Plantago ovata, a commercially important medicinal plant, is mainly cultivated in western regions of India, where elevated levels of Se have been found in soil. Thus, we evaluated the potential of Se biofortification in P. ovata via phytoremediation and its effect on the bioactive composition.ResultsThe results showed a significant alteration in various morphological and physiological parameters in a dose-dependent manner. The 10 µM Se dose improved seedling height, biomass and total chlorophyll content. There was a gradual increase in total Se content, with highest accumulation of 457.65 µg/g FW at 500 µM Se treatment. Se positively affected the antioxidative metabolism which was measured from the change in total antioxidant capacity, radical scavenging activity and Metallothionein 2 expression. Increasing levels of Se also affected the PAL activity, total polyphenol and flavonoid content. Caffeic acid, Coumaric acid and Rutin were found to be the most abundant phenolic compounds.ConclusionsLow levels of selenium (below 50 µM) can successfully improve Se accumulation and elicit production of various polyphenols without hampering plant growth. Thus, Se fortification of P. ovata seedlings via phytoremediation appears to be a feasible and efficient way to enhance its nutraceutical value in dietary products.

Project description:Appendicoliths are commonly found obstructing the lumen of the appendix at the time of appendectomy. To identify factors that might contribute to their formation we investigated the composition of appendicoliths using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy, gas chromatography, polarized light microscopy, X-ray crystallography and protein mass spectroscopy. Forty-eight elements, 32 fatty acids and 109 human proteins were identified within the appendicoliths. The most common elements found in appendicoliths are calcium and phosphorus, 11.0 ± 6.0 and 8.2 ± 4.2% weight, respectively. Palmitic acid (29.7%) and stearate (21.3%) are the most common fatty acids. Some stearate is found in crystalline form-identifiable by polarized light microscopy and confirmable by X-ray crystallography. Appendicoliths have an increased ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids (ratio 22:1). Analysis of 16 proteins common to the appendicoliths analyzed showed antioxidant activity and neutrophil functions (e.g. activation and degranulation) to be the most highly enriched pathways. Considered together, these preliminary findings suggest oxidative stress may have a role in appendicolith formation. Further research is needed to determine how dietary factors such as omega-6 fatty acids and food additives, redox-active metals and the intestinal microbiome interact with genetic factors to predispose to appendicolith formation.

Project description:Medicinal plants have been used to treat diseases since ancient times. Plants used as raw materials for herbal medicine are known as medicinal plants [2]. The U. S. Forest Service estimates that 40% of pharmaceutical drugs in the Western world are derived from plants [1]. Seven thousand medical compounds are derived from plants in the modern pharmacopeia. Herbal medicine combines traditional empirical knowledge with modern science [2]. A medicinal plant is considered an important source of prevention against various diseases [2]. The essential medicine component is extracted from different parts of the plants [8]. In underdeveloped countries, people use medicinal plants as a substitute for medicine. There are various species of plants in the world. Herbs are one of them, which are of different shapes, colors, and leaves [5]. It is difficult for ordinary people to recognize these species of herbs. People use more than 50000 plants in the world for medicinal purposes. There are 8000 medicinal plants in India with evidence of medicinal properties [7]. Automatic classification of these plant species is important because it requires intensive domain knowledge to manually classify the proper species. Machine learning techniques are extensively used in classifying medicinal plant species from photographs, which is challenging but intriguing to academics. Artificial Neural Network classifiers' effective performance depends on the quality of the image dataset [4]. This article represents a medicinal plant dataset: an image dataset of ten different Bangladeshi plant species. Images of medicinal plant leaves were from various gardens, including the Pharmacy Garden at Khwaja Yunus Ali University and the Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College & Hospital in Sirajganj, Bangladesh. Images were collected by taking pictures with high-resolution mobile phone cameras. Ten medicinal species, 500 images per species are included in the data set, namely, Nayantara (Catharanthus roseus), Pathor kuchi (Kalanchoe pinnata), Gynura procumbens (Longevity spinach), Bohera (Terminalia bellirica), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Thankuni (Centella asiatica), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Tulsi (Ocimum tenniflorum), Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), and Devil backbone (Euphorbia tithymaloides). This dataset will benefit researchers applying machine learning and computer vision algorithms in several ways. For example, training and evaluation of machine learning models with this well-curated high-quality dataset, development of new computer vision algorithms, automatic medicinal plant identification in the field of botany and pharmacology for drug discovery and conservation, and data augmentation. Overall, this medicinal plant image dataset can provide researchers in the field of machine learning and computer vision with a valuable resource to develop and evaluate algorithms for plant phenotyping, disease detection, plant identification, drug development, and other tasks related to medicinal plants.
