One-pot hydrothermal synthesis of Nitrogen-doped graphene as high-performance anode materials for lithium ion batteries.

Project description:Nitrogen-doped (N-doped) graphene has been prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal approach using hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) as single carbon and nitrogen source. In this hydrothermal process, HMTA pyrolyzes at high temperature and the N-doped graphene subsequently self-assembles on the surface of MgO particles (formed by the Mg powder reacting with H2O) during which graphene synthesis and nitrogen doping are simultaneously achieved. The as-synthesized graphene with incorporation of nitrogen groups possesses unique structure including thin layer thickness, high surface area, mesopores and vacancies. These structural features and their synergistic effects could not only improve ions and electrons transportation with nanometer-scale diffusion distances but also promote the penetration of electrolyte. The N-doped graphene exhibits high reversible capacity, superior rate capability as well as long-term cycling stability, which demonstrate that the N-doped graphene with great potential to be an efficient electrode material. The experimental results provide a new hydrothermal route to synthesize N-doped graphene with potential application for advanced energy storage, as well as useful information to design new graphene materials.

Hierarchical Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon Microspheres as Anode for High Performance Sodium Ion Batteries.

Project description:Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have been considered as a promising alternative to lithium ion batteries (LIBs) for large scale energy storage in the future. However, the commercial graphite anode is not suitable for SIBs because of its low Na+ ions storage capability and poor cycling stability. Recently, another alternative as anode for SIBs, amorphous carbon materials, have attracted tremendous attention because of their abundant resource, nontoxicity, and most importantly, stability. Here, N-doped hierarchical porous carbon microspheres (NHPCS) derived from Ni-MOF have been prepared and used as anode for SIBs. Benefiting from the open porous structure and expanded interlayer distance, the diffusion of Na+ is greatly facilitated and the Na+ storage capacity is significantly enhanced concurrently. The NHPCS exhibit high reversible capacity (291 mA h g-1 at current of 200 mA g-1), excellent rate performance (256 mA h g-1 at high current of 1,000 mA g-1), and outstanding cycling stability (204 mA h g-1 after 200 cycles).

Heterostructured SnO2-SnS2@C Embedded in Nitrogen-Doped Graphene as a Robust Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Tin-based anode materials with high capacity attract wide attention of researchers and become a strong competitor for the next generation of lithium-ion battery anode materials. However, the poor electrical conductivity and severe volume expansion retard the commercialization of tin-based anode materials. Here, SnO2-SnS2@C nanoparticles with heterostructure embedded in a carbon matrix of nitrogen-doped graphene (SnO2-SnS2@C/NG) is ingeniously designed in this work. The composite was synthesized by a two-step method. Firstly, the SnO2@C/rGO with a nano-layer structure was synthesized by hydrothermal method as the precursor, and then the SnO2-SnS2@C/NG composite was obtained by further vulcanizing the above precursor. It should be noted that a carbon matrix with nitrogen-doped graphene can inhibit the volume expansion of SnO2-SnS2 nanoparticles and promote the transport of lithium ions during continuous cycling. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between nanoparticles and carbon matrix with nitrogen-doped graphene, the heterostructured SnO2-SnS2@C/NG further fundamentally confer improved structural stability and reaction kinetics for lithium storage. As expected, the SnO2-SnS2@C/NG composite exhibited high reversible capacity (1201.2 mA h g-1 at the current rate of 0.1 A g-1), superior rate capability and exceptional long-life stability (944.3 mAh g-1 after 950 cycles at the current rate of 1.0 A g-1). The results demonstrate that the SnO2-SnS2@C/NG composite is a highly competitive anode material for LIBs.

Nitrogen-Doped Carbon for Red Phosphorous Based Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries.

Project description:Serving as conductive matrix and stress buffer, the carbon matrix plays a pivotal role in enabling red phosphorus to be a promising anode material for high capacity lithium ion batteries and sodium ion batteries. In this paper, nitrogen-doping is proved to effective enhance the interface interaction between carbon and red phosphorus. In detail, the adsorption energy between phosphorus atoms and oxygen-containing functional groups on the carbon is significantly reduced by nitrogen doping, as verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The adsorption mechanisms are further revealed on the basis of DFT (the first density functional theory) calculations. The RPNC (red phosphorus/nitrogen-doped carbon composite) material shows higher cycling stability and higher capacity than that of RPC (red phosphorus/carbon composite) anode. After 100 cycles, the RPNC still keeps discharge capacity of 1453 mAh g-1 at the current density of 300 mA g-1 (the discharge capacity of RPC after 100 cycles is 1348 mAh g-1). Even at 1200 mA g-1, the RPNC composite still delivers a capacity of 1178 mAh g-1. This work provides insight information about the interface interactions between composite materials, as well as new technology develops high performance phosphorus based anode materials.

3D free-standing nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide aerogel as anode material for sodium ion batteries with enhanced sodium storage.

Project description:Sodium ion batteries have drawn extensive attentions for large-scale energy storage to replace lithium ion batteries primarily due to the natural abundance of sodium resource and low cost, but their energy density and electrochemical performance are hindered by the sluggish diffusion kinetics of sodium ion. Herein, free-standing nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel has been fabricated via hydrothermal reaction as the potential anode material for sodium ion batteries. The three dimensional porous network structure of the graphene aerogel provides sufficient interstitial space for sodium ion accommodation, allowing fast and reversible ion intercalation/de-intercalation. The nitrogen doping could introduce defects on the graphene sheets, making the feasible transport of large-sized sodium ion. Benefiting from the effective structure and nitrogen doping, the obtained material demonstrates high reversible capacities, good cycling performance (287.9 mA h g-1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1), especially superior rate capability (151.9 mA h g-1 at a high current density of 5 A g-1).

A novel graphene-polysulfide anode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:We report a simple and efficient approach for fabrication of novel graphene-polysulfide (GPS) anode materials, which consists of conducting graphene network and homogeneously distributed polysulfide in between and chemically bonded with graphene sheets. Such unique architecture not only possesses fast electron transport channels, shortens the Li-ion diffusion length but also provides very efficient Li-ion reservoirs. As a consequence, the GPS materials exhibit an ultrahigh reversible capacity, excellent rate capability and superior long-term cycling performance in terms of 1600, 550, 380 mAh g(-1) after 500, 1300, 1900 cycles with a rate of 1, 5 and 10 A g(-1) respectively. This novel and simple strategy is believed to work broadly for other carbon-based materials. Additionally, the competitive cost and low environment impact may promise such materials and technique a promising future for the development of high-performance energy storage devices for diverse applications.

Solvothermal-Derived S-Doped Graphene as an Anode Material for Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted enormous attention in recent years due to the high abundance and low cost of sodium. However, in contrast to lithium-ion batteries, conventional graphite is unsuitable for SIB anodes because it is much more difficult to intercolate the larger Na ions into graphite layers. Therefore, it is critical to develop new anode materials for SIBs for practical use. Here, heteroatom-doped graphene with high doping levels and disordered structures is prepared using a simple and economical thermal process. The solvothermal-derived graphene shows excellent performance as an anode material for SIBs. It exhibits a high reversible capacity of 380 mAh g-1 after 300 cycles at 100 mA g-1, excellent rate performance 217 mAh g-1 at 3200 mA g-1, and superior cycling performance at 2.0 A g-1 during 1000 cycles with negligible capacity fade.

N-doped catalytic graphitized hard carbon for high-performance lithium/sodium-ion batteries.

Project description:Hard carbon attracts wide attentions as the anode for high-energy rechargeable batteries due to its low cost and high theoretical capacities. However, the intrinsically disordered microstructure gives it poor electrical conductivity and unsatisfactory rate performance. Here we report a facile synthesis of N-doped graphitized hard carbon via a simple carbonization and activation of a urea-soaked self-crosslinked Co-alginate for the high-performance anode of lithium/sodium-ion batteries. Owing to the catalytic graphitization of Co and the introduction of nitrogen-functional groups, the hard carbon shows structural merits of ordered expanded graphitic layers, hierarchical porous channels, and large surface area. Applying in the anode of lithium/sodium-ion batteries, the large surface area and the existence of nitrogen functional groups can improve the specific capacity by surface adsorption and faradic reaction, while the hierarchical porous channels and expanded graphitic layers can provide facilitate pathways for electrolyte and improve the rate performance. In this way, our hard carbon provides its feasibility to serve as an advanced anode material for high-energy rechargeable lithium/sodium-ion batteries.

3D MoS2/graphene oxide integrated composite as anode for high-performance sodium-ion batteries.

Project description:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are emerging as a promising alternative to conventional lithium-ion technology, due to the abundance of sodium resources. The major drawbacks for the commercial application of SIBs lie in the slow kinetic processes and poor energy density of the devices. Molybdenum sulfide (MoS2), a graphene-like material, is becoming a promising anode material for SIBs, because of its high theoretical capacity (670 mAh g-1) and layered structure that suitable for Na+ intercalation/extraction. However, the intrinsic properties of MoS2, such as low conductivity, slow Na+ diffusion kinetics and large volume change during charging/discharging, restrict its rate capability and cycle stability. Here, molybdenum disulfide and graphene oxide (3D MoS2/GO) with excellent conductivity were fabricated through layer-by-layer method using amino-functionalized SiO2 nanospheres as templates. The 3D MoS2/GO composite demonstrates excellent cycling stability and capacity of 525 mA h g-1 at 500 mA g-1 after 100 cycles, which mainly due to the integrated MoS2/GO components and unique 3D macroporous structure, facilitating the material conductivity and Na+ diffusion rate, while tolerating the volume expansion of MoS2 during the charge/discharge processes.

First-principles computational investigation of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes as anode materials for lithium-ion and potassium-ion batteries.

Project description:Significant research efforts, mostly experimental, have been devoted to finding high-performance anode materials for lithium-ion and potassium-ion batteries; both graphitic carbon-based and carbon nanotube-based materials have been generating huge interest. Here, first-principles calculations are performed to investigate the possible effects of doping defects and the varying tube diameter of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on their potential for battery applications. Both adsorption and migration of Li and K are studied for a range of pristine and nitrogen-doped CNTs, which are further compared with 2D graphene-based counterparts. We use detailed electronic structure analyses to reveal that different doping defects are advantageous for carbon nanotube-based and graphene-based models, as well as that curved CNT walls help facilitate the penetration of potassium through the doping defect while showing a negative effect on that of lithium.
