Sensing techniques based on mid-infrared absorption spectroscopy offer excellent stability, selectivity and sensitivity, for numerous possibilities expected for sensors integrated into mobile and wearable devices. Project description:Ozone is a strong oxidant that is globally used as disinfection agent for many purposes including indoor building air cleaning, during food preparation procedures, and for control and killing of bacteria such as E. coli and S. aureus. However, it has been shown that effective ozone concentrations for controlling e.g., microbial growth need to be higher than 5 ppm, thereby exceeding the recommended U.S. EPA threshold more than 10 times. Consequently, real-time monitoring of such ozone concentration levels is essential. Here, we describe the first online gas sensing system combining a compact Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer with a new generation of gas cells, a so-called substrate-integrated hollow waveguide (iHWG). The sensor was calibrated using an UV lamp for the controlled generation of ozone in synthetic air. A calibration function was established in the concentration range of 0.3-5.4 mmol m⁻³ enabling a calculated limit of detection (LOD) at 0.14 mmol m⁻³ (3.5 ppm) of ozone. Given the adaptability of the developed IR sensing device toward a series of relevant air pollutants, and considering the potential for miniaturization e.g., in combination with tunable quantum cascade lasers in lieu of the FTIR spectrometer, a wide range of sensing and monitoring applications of beyond ozone analysis are anticipated.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively used for gas sorption, storage and separation owing to ultrahigh porosity, exceptional thermal stability, and wide structural diversity. However, when it comes to ultra-low concentration gas detection, technical bottlenecks of MOFs appear due to the poor adsorption capacity at ppm-/ppb-level concentration and the limited sensitivity for signal transduction. Here, we present hybrid MOF-polymer physi-chemisorption mechanisms integrated with infrared (IR) nanoantennas for highly selective and ultrasensitive CO2 detection. To improve the adsorption capacity for trace amounts of gas molecules, MOFs are decorated with amino groups to introduce the chemisorption while maintaining the structural integrity for physisorption. Additionally, leveraging all major optimization methods, a multi-hotspot strategy is proposed to improve the sensitivity of nanoantennas by enhancing the near field and engineering the radiative and absorptive loss. As a benefit, we demonstrate the competitive advantages of our strategy against the state-of-the-art miniaturized IR CO2 sensors, including low detection limit, high sensitivity (0.18%/ppm), excellent reversibility (variation within 2%), and high selectivity (against C2H5OH, CH3OH, N2). This work provides valuable insights into the integration of advanced porous materials and nanophotonic devices, which can be further adopted in ultra-low concentration gas monitoring in industry and environmental applications.

Project description:The field of optical metrology with its high precision position, rotation and wavefront sensors represents the basis for lithography and high resolution microscopy. However, the on-chip integration-a task highly relevant for future nanotechnological devices-necessitates the reduction of the spatial footprint of sensing schemes by the deployment of novel concepts. A promising route towards this goal is predicated on the controllable directional emission of the fundamentally smallest emitters of light, i.e., dipoles, as an indicator. Here we realize an integrated displacement sensor based on the directional emission of Huygens dipoles excited in an individual dipolar antenna. The position of the antenna relative to the excitation field determines its directional coupling into a six-way crossing of photonic crystal waveguides. In our experimental study supported by theoretical calculations, we demonstrate the first prototype of an integrated displacement sensor with a standard deviation of the position accuracy below λ/300 at room temperature and ambient conditions.

Project description:Development of novel mid-infrared (MIR) lasers could ultimately boost emerging detection technologies towards innovative spectroscopic and imaging solutions. Photoacoustic (PA) modality has been heralded for years as one of the most powerful detection tools enabling high signal-to-noise ratio analysis. Here, we demonstrate a novel, compact and sensitive MIR-PA system for carbon dioxide (CO2) monitoring at its strongest absorption band by combining a gas-filled fiber laser and PA technology. Specifically, the PA signals were excited by a custom-made hydrogen (H2) based MIR Raman fiber laser source with a pulse energy of ⁓ 18 μJ, quantum efficiency of ⁓ 80% and peak power of ⁓ 3.9 kW. A CO2 detection limit of 605 ppbv was attained from the Allan deviation. This work constitutes an alternative method for advanced high-sensitivity gas detection.

Project description:A new gas absorption module, the substrate-embedded hollow waveguide (eHWG) model, is proposed. It consists of a substrate with a curved channel and a hollow waveguide. The hollow waveguide is curved into the channel and works as a gas absorption cell as well as a transmission medium for mid-infrared light. Owing to the low loss property of the hollow waveguide, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was improved for the sensing system. A polycarbonate (PC) base tube was used to obtain flexibility in the fabrication of the hollow waveguide. A silver (Ag) layer and a silver iodide (AgI) layer were inner-coated to ensure a low loss property at the fingerprint wavelength of methane gas. A sensing system was established using a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), an external detector, and an eHWG. Experimental investigations were carried on the sensing performance of eHWGs with various channel shapes. Comparison studies were made on eHWGs embedded with Ag-coated or Ag- and AgI-coated hollow waveguides. The Ag- and AgI-coated hollow waveguides with inner diameters of 0.7, 1.4, and 2.0 mm were used in the eHWGs. The large bore waveguide had low loss but high bending additional loss. The large bore waveguide had a low detection limit due to high coupling efficiency with the light source. A limit of detection (LOD) as low as 2.7 ppm was attained for the system using the eHWG with the long and large bore waveguide.

Project description:Nanophotonic waveguides are at the core of a great variety of optical sensors. These structures confine light along defined paths on photonic chips and provide light-matter interaction via an evanescent field. However, waveguides still lag behind free-space optics for sensitivity-critical applications such as trace gas detection. Short optical pathlengths, low interaction strengths, and spurious etalon fringes in spectral transmission are among the main reasons why on-chip gas sensing is still in its infancy. In this work, we report on a mid-infrared integrated waveguide sensor that successfully addresses these drawbacks. This sensor operates with a 107% evanescent field confinement factor in air, which not only matches but also outperforms free-space beams in terms of the per-length optical interaction. Furthermore, negligible facet reflections result in a flat spectral background and record-low absorbance noise that can finally compete with free-space spectroscopy. The sensor performance was validated at 2.566 μm, which showed a 7 ppm detection limit for acetylene with only a 2 cm long waveguide.

Project description:We present a bi-functional surface emitting and surface detecting mid-infrared device applicable for gas-sensing. A distributed feedback ring quantum cascade laser is monolithically integrated with a detector structured from a bi-functional material for same frequency lasing and detection. The emitted single mode radiation is collimated, back reflected by a flat mirror and detected by the detector element of the sensor. The surface operation mode combined with the low divergence emission of the ring quantum cascade laser enables for long analyte interaction regions spatially separated from the sample surface. The device enables for sensing of gaseous analytes which requires a relatively long interaction region. Our design is suitable for 2D array integration with multiple emission and detection frequencies. Proof of principle measurements with isobutane (2-methylpropane) and propane as gaseous analytes were conducted. Detectable concentration values of 0-70% for propane and 0-90% for isobutane were reached at a laser operation wavelength of 6.5 μm utilizing a 10 cm gas cell in double pass configuration.

Project description:Polarization-independent dielectric meta-lens is proposed to monolithically integrate with a HgCdTe infrared photodetector to concentrate power flux into a reduced photosensitive area for performance enhancement. Although a reduction in photosensitive area could suppress the dark current, the more seriously reduced light absorptance would degrade the specific detectivity D*. The integration of the meta-lens could reverse the situation by improving the absorptance of the photosensitive region. The meta-lens composed of an array of nano-pillars with varying diameters is formed by carving the CdZnTe substrate of the HgCdTe detector so that the integration could be accomplished in situ. The meta-lens focuses the incident light through the CdZnTe medium and at the HgCdTe photosensitive region. The focal spot is about the wavelength size and the focusing efficiency is above 63%. Concerning a HgCdTe detector with a pitch size of 40 μm × 40 μm, when the photosensitive area is reduced to 5 μm × 5 μm, the meta-lens could still keep the light absorptance above 50%, which is 49 times higher than that of the device without the meta-lens. The dark current reduces with the decreasing photosensitive area in a linear manner. When the photosensitive area shrinks from 40 μm × 40 μm to 10 μm × 10 μm or 5 μm × 5 μm, the dark current reduces by 16 or even 64 times. Compared to the pristine device, the employment of the meta-lens together with the reduction in photosensitive area could enhance D* by 5.5 times for the photosensitive area as 5 μm × 5 μm. Further, the meta-lens exhibits a good dispersion tolerance over the wavelength range from 3.3 μm to 5 μm. The averaged detectivity enhancement over this spectrum range is around 3 times for the photosensitive area as 5 μm × 5 μm. The angular response of the meta-lens integrated detector depends on the focal length. For a focal length of 73 µm or 38 µm, the angle of view for a 5 μm × 5 μm photosensitive area is 4.0° or 7.7°. For the inter-pillar distance to be 2 µm in our design, the influence of the coupling effect between the nano-pillars on the performance of the meta-lens is little.

Project description:Directly accessing the middle infrared, the molecular functional group spectral region, via supercontinuum generation processes based on turn-key fiber lasers offers the undeniable advantage of simplicity and robustness. Recently, the assessment of the coherence of the mid-IR dispersive wave in silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguides, pumped at telecom wavelength, established an important first step towards mid-IR frequency comb generation based on such compact systems. Yet, the spectral reach and efficiency still fall short for practical implementation. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that large cross-section Si3N4 waveguides pumped with 2 μm fs-fiber laser can reach the important spectroscopic spectral region in the 3-4 μm range, with up to 35% power conversion and milliwatt-level output powers. As a proof of principle, we use this source for detection of C2H2 by absorption spectroscopy. Such result makes these sources suitable candidate for compact, chip-integrated spectroscopic and sensing applications.

Project description:The mid-infrared (2.5 < λ < 25 μm) spectral region is utilized for many purposes, such as chemical/biological sensing, free space communications, and illuminators/countermeasures. Compared to near-infrared optical systems, however, mid-infrared component technology is still rather crude, with isolated components exhibiting limited functionality. In this manuscript, we make a significant leap forward in mid-infrared technology by developing a platform which can combine functions of multiple mid-infrared optical elements, including an integrated light source. In a single device, we demonstrate wide wavelength tuning (240 nm) and beam steering (17.9 degrees) in the mid-infrared with a significantly reduced beam divergence (down to 0.5 degrees). The architecture is also set up to be manufacturable and testable on a wafer scale, requiring no cleaved facets or special mirror coating to function.
