Mitophagy can selectively remove damaged toxic mitochondria, protecting a cell from apoptosis. The molecular spatial-temporal mechanisms governing autophagosomal selection of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-damaged mitochondria, particularly in a platelet (no genomic DNA for transcriptional regulation), remain unclear.
