Increasing Colorectal Cancer Screening in Urban African American Communities Via Churches

ABSTRACT: This is an intervention study to increase colorectal cancer screening and physical activity in members of African-American churches who are 50 years old and older. The control arm receives the Body & Soul program, a program to increase fruit and vegetable intake. The investigators hypothesize that those receiving the intervention, which includes four tailored newsletters and peer counseling, will be more likely to be screened if not up-to-date, and more likely to increase physical activity if screening was up-to-date at baseline, than controls.

The overall goal of this study is to understand the role of engineered physicochemical environment on the structure and function of microbial communities in urban storm-water canals. Water and sediment samples were collected after a rain event from Sungei Ulu Pandan watershed of >25km2, which has two major land use types: Residential and industrial. Samples were analyzed for physicochemical variables and microbial community structure and composition. Functional gene abundance was determined using GeoChip.

Integration of Cancer Health Activities Into African American Churches

Project description:The proposed project will compare two ways to apply a known-effective cancer educational strategy through African American churches: 1) a standard method vs. 2) a new method in which the churches integrate the strategy into their organizational structure and practice at multiple levels. It will be determined whether this "integrated approach" results in more effective and sustained cancer education and screening activities at both the church and individual levels over time. This project will make important contributions to research in evidence-based medicine and sustainability. In a climate of limited resources, identifying sustainable and effective ways to increase cancer awareness and screening in African American men and women is more important than ever.

Physical activity diminish fatigue and systemic interferon response in multiple sclerosis

Project description:Objective: To evaluate gene expression profiles in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients who improved their fatigue status after a program of physical exercise and to compare them with healthy controls (HC). Methods: A prospective longitudinal study was conducted. Gene expression in whole blood was profiled at baseline in 7 healthy controls and also in 7 fatigued-MS patients. Patients underwent a physical exercise program for 6 months, and their fatigue status and gene expression profiles were again analyzed at the end of this program. Results: MS patients showed a significant activation of genes participating in the systemic interferon response in comparison with healthy controls. Fatigue improved at the end of the physical activity program, and, in parallel, systemic activation of interferon related genes disappeared. Conclusions: Fatigue improvement following an exercise program is associated to down modulation of interferon activity at the systemic level in MS patients. Our results provide a biological basis for the observed benefit of physical exercise in MS.

Health Education Materials With/Out a Physical Activity Program for Patients Who Have Undergone Treatment for High-Risk Stage II or Stage III Colon Cancer

Project description:RATIONALE: Participating in a physical activity program designed to increase free time physical activity and receiving written health education materials may influence the chance of cancer recurring as well as impact on physical fitness, psychological well-being and the quality of life of patients who have undergone surgery and chemotherapy for colon cancer. It is not yet known whether giving a physical activity program together with health education materials is more effective than giving health education materials alone for patients who have undergone colon cancer treatment. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying a physical activity program given together with health education materials to see how well it works compared with giving health education materials alone for patients who have undergone treatment for high-risk stage II or stage III colon cancer.

Narrative or Fact-Based Videos in Increasing Colorectal Cancer Screenings in African American Communities

Project description:This randomized clinical trial studies narrative or fact-based videos in increasing colorectal cancer screenings in African American communities. Informational videotapes may help increase the number of participants who engage in colonoscopy screenings. It is not yet known whether narrative videos may be more effective than fact-based videos in increasing colorectal cancer screenings.
