Ambient Lighting During Colonoscopy and Its Effect on Adenoma Detection Rate and Eye Fatigue

ABSTRACT: A retrospective and prospective study to determine if the use of ambient lighting during screening colonoscopy is well tolerated and if ambient lighting will help physicians maintain adenoma detection rates while decreasing symptoms of eye strain as the day progresses.

Eye proteome of Drosophila melanogaster

Project description:We report the proteome composition of the Drosophila eye – a compound organ that is highly enriched in membrane proteins. The fly eye is a popular model to study the physiology of vision by means of genetic, pharmacological, and dietary interference.While the eye transcriptome and development-related changes of gene expression profiles have been extensively studied, little is known about the eye proteome.we employed GeLC-MS/MS to identify and rank the abundances of 3516 eye proteins. Moreover, we applied our MS Western method to determine the absolute (molar) abundances of a related set of proteins that are important for photoreceptor structure (including maintenance) and function (phototransduction). Altogether, we provide a comprehensive and expandable proteomics resource that will be valuable for a variety of studies of ocular biochemistry, physiology, and development.

Expression data from transdetermined Drosophila eye antennal imaginal disc by winged eye overexpression.

Project description:Drosophila imaginal disc cells exhibit a remarkable ability to switch cell fates under various perturbations, a phenomenon known as transdetermination (TD). The winged eye (wge) gene induces eye-to-wing TD by its overexpression in eye imaginal discs using eye specific Gal4 driver (eyeless-Gal4). Gene network controlling this process, however, is largely unclear. Additionally, we identified that heterochromatin-related histone methyltransferase Su(var)3-9 is essential for wge-mediated TD. We used microarray to detail the global gene network underlying wge-mediated eye-to-wing TD, and the involvement of Su(var)3-9 in the gene network.

Meis homeobox genes control cell competence within the eye-specified neuroepithelium (ChIP-seq)

Project description:Vertebrate eye is derived from the neuroepithelium, surface ectoderm, and extracellular mesenchyme. Eye-specified neuroepithelium forms the optic cup in which spatial separation of three domains is established, namely, the region of multipotent retinal progenitor cells (RPCs), the ciliary margin zone (CMZ) possessing both neurogenic and non-neurogenic potential, and the optic disc (OD), the interface between the optic stalk and the neuroretina. Here, we show by genetic ablation in the developing optic cup that Meis1 and Meis2 homeobox genes function redundantly to maintain the retinal progenitor pool while they simultaneously suppress the expression of genes characteristic of CMZ and OD fates. Furthermore, we demonstrate that Meis transcription factors bind the regulatory regions of RPC-, CMZ-, and OD-specific genes, thus providing a mechanistic insight into the Meis-dependent gene regulatory network. Our work uncovers the essential role of Meis1 and Meis2 as regulators of cell fate competence and guardians of spatial territories in the vertebrate eye.

Impact of Experience on Results With the Third Eye Retroscope

Project description:The Third Eye Retroscope is a device that can be used with a colonoscope to improve the ability of a physician to see areas of the colon that may be hidden from the view of the colonoscope. Previous studies have shown that physicians are able to detect additional polyps when they use the device along with the colonoscope. The purpose of this study is to determine whether physicians can detect greater numbers of additional polyps as they gain in experience with the device.
