Non-curative ESDs: Assessing the Rates and Risk Factors for Residual Neoplasia

ABSTRACT: Short and long outcomes of ESD are well described, particularly in Eastern series. However, the outcome of non-curative ESDs is scarcely reported in the west (particularly among non-gastric or submucosal lesions). Therefore, the aim of this project is to describe the European experience with non-curative ESDs, analysing all the consecutive ESDs performed in several reference centers, assessing the presence of residual lesion in the endoscopic follow-up or in the surgical specimen.

Project description:Russell’s viper (Daboia russelii) (RV), a category I medically important snake as well as a member of the “Big Four”, is responsible for a heavy toll of snake bite mortality and morbidity in Indian sub-continent. Epidemiological studies suggest highest incidence of RV envenomation in eastern India (EI). In this study the RV venom proteomes from Burdwan and Nadia, the two districts of West Bengal, eastern India was deciphered for the first time using tandem mass spectrometry analysis.

Mucosal biopsies from groups Normal (NOR) and patients who underwent curative large bowel resection for colorectal cancer (M-CRC)

Project description:The challenge of preventing colorectal cancer (CRC) is the early identification of individuals whose apparently normal colorectal mucosa will develop cancer, because of inherited trait or environmental exposure. We sought to use genome-wide expression profiling of endoscopic biopsies to detect a signature of propensity for cancer. We performed oligonucleotide microarray analysis of normal appearing mucosa of the following cases: healthy individuals (NOR), disease-free carriers predisposed to HNPCC (hereditary non-polyposis CRC), disease-free patients who underwent curative large bowel resection for CRC 1 to 15 years earlier and patients with CRC (MCRC) (GSE23011). As test set we run on affymetrix arrays an independent set of mucosal biopsies of MCRC and NOR samples. This profiling is based on the analysis of 5 patients who underwent curative large bowel resection for CRC from 1 to 15 years before (MCRC samples), and 12 endoscopy-negative, asymptomatic individuals (NOR samples)

Palaeoproteomics and microanalysis reveal techniques of production of animal based metal threads in medieval textiles

Project description:Protein-based or animal-based metal threads were largely used between the 10th and the 15th centuries, in European, Middle Eastern and Far Eastern textile productions for the decoration of textiles and cloths to make a display of wealth, power and status. A total of 91 samples were collected from a corpus of 66 textile fragments belonging to 54 catalogued objects. Proteomics analysis allowed to determine the origin of the animal substrates, which were found to be from cattle membranes (possibly from gastrointestinal organs or bladder) in membrane strips, while in leather strips (possibly made from the corium or grain skin layer of the animals), goat (exclusively in Spanish samples) and sheep (in Middle Eastern/Italian and Far Eastern samples) were identified. Other protein-based components that made the strips were identified and associated to the adhesive binders.
