Geriatric Assessment and Management with Question Prompt List using a Web-based Application for Elderly Cancer Patients to Communicate Aging-related Concerns - Randomized Controlled Trial -

Project description:Interventions: Based on the manual, clinical psychologist, nurses, physicians, or hospital staff as the interventionist will: 1) Explain the Geriatric Assessment (GA) summary to the patient and then discuss the patient’s perception about GA impairments and need for recommended management; then prepare a feedback sheet based on information obtained from the patients, such as aging-related concerns and their interest in the recommendations, 2) Provide communication support using Question Prompt List (QPL), assist patients in organizing and communicating aging-related concerns and intentions for treatment and care to their oncologists; then prepare a feedback sheet including a list of selected questions, 3) Provide feedback on the results of 1) and 2) to their oncologist using a feedback sheet. Interventions will be conducted just prior to the first outpatient visit after randomization. Interventionists are clinical psychologists, nurses, physicians, or hospital staff who have completed training based on the manual in advance. For the 5 months after the initial intervention, interventionists will review and discuss implementation of GA-guided management monthly with the patients and their oncologists to implement management as needed. At 3 months after the initial GA+QPL, GA will be reassessed, and management will be revised if necessary, and feedback on GA+QPL will be provided to patients and oncologists in the same manner as that in the first intervention. Proteomic Analysis on Paraffine-Archived Melanoma

Project description:The discovery of novel protein biomarkers in melanoma is crucial. Our introduction of formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tumor protocol provides new opportunities to understand the progression of melanoma and open the possibility to screen tens of thousands of FFPE samples deposited in tumor biobanks and available at hospital pathology departments. In our retrospective pilot study, 90 FFPE samples from 77 patients were processed. Differential quantitative protein expression was performed by high resolution mass spectrometry. The protein expression profiles were correlated with the standardized dataset of histopathologic analysis, and longitudinal therapeutical meta-data.

Tailoring information to older colorectal cancer patients: Effects of using a web-based patient-directed tool

Project description:Interventions: Patients will be assigned to an experimental condition that receives the Patient Navigator in addition to usual care or to a control condition that receives usual care. Randomization takes place at hospital level, i.e. three hospitals will implement the Patient Navigator and three hospitals will serve as control condition hospitals and will implement the Patient Navigator after the study has finished. The Patient Navigator is a website for older colorectal cancer patients that is systematically developed in the first part of the OCA-2 study. The Patient Navigator offers tailored information about diagnostic tests, treatments and follow-up facilities (i.e., only content that is relevant for the specific patient is showed). Moreover, the Patient Navigator offers the possibility to upload audiotaped consultations and contains tools to help patients preparing for consultations (so called Question Prompt Lists; one with general questions that people can ask about every treatment, and 13 about specific tests or treatments). Gene expression profiles proton-induced in brest cell lines

Project description:Literature data report the helpful role of specific molecularly based signatures to predict response to treatment in cancer, including breast cancer (BC) disease. As known, BC is a heterogeneous disease presenting distinct subtypes with different clinical outcomes. Thus, the choice of a unique treatment plan for all BC patients, including radiation therapy (RT), may be not the best option. Technological advances in RT are evolving with the use of proton beams, which reduce the dose administered to the heart compared to conventional RT. However, limitate data regarding proton-induced molecular changes are currently available. The aim of this study was therefore to study gene expression profiles induced by proton irradiation with 0.5, 2 and 9 Gy of Ionizing radiation (IR) doses in breast cells. The great amount of data here collected, represent an useful tool to better understand the molecular mechanisms elicited by proton irradiation, thereby filling the existing lack of data in the literature.

Project description:Interventions: We conduct an introduction to the chemotherapy center from diagnosis and treatment department, and, in chemotherapy center, a medical oncologist, a pharmacist or a nurse conducts side effect monitoring using an episode of care sheet (the skin reaction monitoring sheet that we made for the purpose of doing multi-disciplinary cooperation smoothly) at chemotherapy enforcement. By severity of the skin reaction, a tumor physician refers you to a dermatologist, and side effect monitoring, a dermatologist intervene after the next treatment.
