Perivenous stellate cells are the main source of myofibroblasts and cancer-associated-fibroblasts formed after chronic liver injuries

ABSTRACT: We employed scRNA-seq to elucidate the transcriptome of all non-parenchymal cell (NPC) types from the liver. We have identified 9 different cell types based on the expression patterns of known cell type-specific marker genes. From the top differentially expressed genes, we identified Tcf21 as a novel HSC-specific gene. And Tcf21 is the only one that distinguishes quiescent HSCs from other liver cell types of the normal livers, as well as from activated HSCs in the fibrotic liver.
