Acute effects of taxifolin food on whole blood gene expression levels after cognitive measure test.

ABSTRACT: Polyphenols are known to improve human immune and cognitive functioning. In this study, we analyzed the effects of a single administration of foods containing taxifolin on whole blood gene expression after cognitive measure test in healthy young adults. A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover-controlled trial was conducted in which a single dose of either a food containing taxifolin (108 mg) or a placebo was administered to 28 human subjects. Cognitive measure test (Serial 3s, Serial 7s, Rapid Visual Information Processing (RVIP)) were performed 90 minutes following administration. They were drawn before food intake and after cognitive measure test. Analysis of whole blood gene expression before and after the test revealed that the expression of foreign body removal-related genes was increased by ingestion of taxifolin, and that most of the expression-variable genes were well expressed in granulocytes. It was suggested that a single intake of taxifolin may enhance the removal of foreign substances by strengthening the innate immune system and suppress the occurrence of injury.
