ABSTRACT: Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading cause of community-acquired pneumonia. The release of the pore-forming cholesterol-dependent cytolysin (CDC) pneumolysin (PLY) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a physiological metabolite, is an important virulence determinant of pneumococci.
