Project description:An overview of the expression pattern of all rice genes under natural field conditions based on microarray analysis of different organs and tissues at various stages of growth and development from transplanting to harvesting. A total of 48 samples representing organs/tissues at various stages of growth and development with 3 replicates each except for one anther sample with 2 replicates. Vegetative organs such as leaf blade, leaf sheath, root and stem were sampled during the vegetative, reproductive and ripening stages. Young inflorescence, anther, pistil, lemma, palea, ovary, embryo, and endosperm were sampled at various stages of development.

Co-cultivating rice plants with Azolla filiculoides modifies root architecture and timing of developmental stages

Project description:Innovative strategies for increasing the yield of rice, the staple food for more than half of the global population, are needed to keep pace with the expected worldwide population increase, and sustainably forefront the challenges posed by climate change. Traditionally, in Southern-East Asian countries, rice farming benefits from the use of Azolla spp., either as green manure or as co-cultivated plants, for the supply of nitrogen. Azolla spp. are ferns that, in virtue of their symbiosis with the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Trichormus azollae, fix atmospheric nitrogen and release it to the environment upon decomposition of their biomass. However, if and to what extent actively growing Azolla plants impact on the development of co-cultivated rice plantlets remains to be understood. To address this point here we employed an experimental model to follow the growth and development of roots and aerial organs of rice seedlings when co-cultivated with Azolla filiculoides. We show that actively growing A. filiculoides plants alter the architecture of the roots, the transcriptome of the roots, and the hormonal profiles of both roots and leaves.

Expression data from rice organs at the reproductive stage

Project description:Plant hormones interact with each other and regulate gene expression to control plant growth and development. To understand the complex network, accumulation of comprehensive and integrative data of gene expression and hormone concentration is important. Using microarray, global gene expression profile was analyzed to compare with plant hormone concentration in 14 parts of rice at reproductive stage. The microarray data are used to construct public rice hormonome-transcriptome database UniVIO (http://univio.psc.riken.jp/).

Comprehensive gene expression profiling of the rice root system based on developmental stages and tissue types

Project description:The root system is a crucial determinant of plant growth potential because of its important functions, e.g., acquisition of water and nutrients, structural support, and interaction with symbiotic organisms. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms of root development and functions is therefore necessary for improving plant productivity, particularly for crop plants including rice. As an initial step towards developing a comprehensive understanding of the root system, we performed a large-scale transcriptome analysis of the rice root via a combined laser microdissection and microarray analysis approach.
