Supercapacitor operating at 200 degrees celsius.

Project description:The operating temperatures of current electrochemical energy storage devices are limited due to electrolyte degradation and separator instability at higher temperatures. Here we demonstrate that a tailored mixture of materials can facilitate operation of supercapacitors at record temperatures, as high as 200°C. Composite electrolyte/separator structures made from naturally occurring clay and room temperature ionic liquids, with graphitic carbon electrodes, show stable supercapacitor performance at 200°C with good cyclic stability. Free standing films of such high temperature composite electrolyte systems can become versatile functional membranes in several high temperature energy conversion and storage applications.

Reprogramming to pluripotency is an ancient trait of vertebrate Oct4 and Pou2 proteins

Project description:The evolutionary origins of the gene network underlying cellular pluripotency, a central theme in developmental biology, have yet to be elucidated. In mammals, Oct4 is a factor crucial in the reprogramming of differentiated cells into induced pluripotent stem cells. The Oct4 and Pou2 genes evolved from a POU class V gene ancestor, but it is unknown whether pluripotency induced by Oct4 gene activity is a feature specific to mammals or was already present in ancestral vertebrates. Here we report that different vertebrate Pou2 and Oct4 homologues can induce pluripotency in mouse and human fibroblasts and that the inability of zebrafish Pou2 to establish pluripotency is not representative of all Pou2 genes, as medaka Pou2 and axolotl Pou2 are able to reprogram somatic cells into pluripotent cells. Thermally-responsive, nonflammable phosphonium ionic liquid electrolytes for lithium metal batteries: operating at 100 degrees celsius.

Project description:Rechargeable batteries such as Li ion/Li metal batteries are widely used in the electronics market but the chemical instability of the electrolyte limits their use in more demanding environmental conditions such as in automotive, oil exploration, or mining applications. In this study, a series of alkyl phosphonium ionic liquid electrolyte are described with high thermal stability and solubility for LiTFSI. A lithium metal battery (LMB) containing a tailored phosphonium ionic liquid/LiTFSI electrolyte operates at 100 °C with good specific capacities and cycling stability. Substantial capacity is maintained during 70 cycles or 30 days. Instant on-off battery operation is realized via the significant temperature dependence of the electrolyte material, demonstrating the robustness and potential for use at high temperature.

Targeted temperature management at 33 degrees Celsius in patients with high-grade aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: a protocol for a multicenter randomized controlled study.

Project description:BackgroundStudies on the use of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) to improve the outcome of high-grade aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), show promising, though conflicting results because of the lack of high-quality trials. The aim of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of TH (maintaining bladder temperature at 33 °C for ≥72 h) to treat patients with high-grade aSAH (Hunt-Hess grade IV-V).MethodsA multicenter, randomized, controlled clinical trial will be conducted for October 2020 to September 2024 involving 10 clinics. Patients who meet the inclusion criteria will be randomized 1:1 to a TH group and a normothermia group. The trial will enroll 96 participants in TH group and normothermia one, respectively. The trial was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03442608) on February 22, 2018. Following conventional treatment for aSAH, patients will undergo either TH for at least 72 h or normothermia. The primary endpoint is the Glasgow outcome scale at 6 months after bleeding. The secondary endpoints are: (I) mortality at 6 months after bleeding; (II) intracranial pressure; (III) intensive care unit stay; and (IV) hospital stay. The safety endpoints include neurological, infectious, intestinal, circulatory, coagulation, and bleeding complications, electrolyte disorders, and other complications.DiscussionIf the study hypothesis is confirmed, TH at 33 °C in patients with high-grade aSAH may become a promising treatment strategy for improving 6-month outcome.Trial registrationThe trial has been registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (ID: NCT03442608).

36 degrees step size of proton-driven c-ring rotation in FoF1-ATP synthase.

Project description:Synthesis of adenosine triphosphate ATP, the 'biological energy currency', is accomplished by F(o)F(1)-ATP synthase. In the plasma membrane of Escherichia coli, proton-driven rotation of a ring of 10 c subunits in the F(o) motor powers catalysis in the F(1) motor. Although F(1) uses 120 degrees stepping during ATP synthesis, models of F(o) predict either an incremental rotation of c subunits in 36 degrees steps or larger step sizes comprising several fast substeps. Using single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer, we provide the first experimental determination of a 36 degrees sequential stepping mode of the c-ring during ATP synthesis.
