Project description:As marine invertebrates, scallops lack adaptive immunity and employ innate immunity as the front line and almost the solo defense mechanism to protect them against invaders. Accumulating research achievements demonstrated that exosomes could act as innate immune effectors that contribute to host defense mechanism. To better understand the immune functions of exosomes in Chlamys farreri, miRNA profiles of hemocytes from scallops injected with PBS, with normal exosomes and LPS stimulating exosomes, respectively, were generated by deep sequencing, in triplicate.

Effects of dermatan sulfate from marine invertebrates in wound healing pathway: a natural resource applied to regenerative therapy

Project description:The aim of this study was to identify the biological mechanisms involved in the effects of natural compounds such as heparin analogues obtained from marine invertebrates in wound healing We performed the obtaining, purifying and chemical characterization of the dermatan sulfate extracted from Styela plicata, an ascidian species. DS was used in wound healing in vitro assay and was analyzed for its effect in the toxicity, proliferation and cellular migration of murine fibroblasts. In addition, a gene expression test was performed to determine which genes responsible for the healing process were being modulated.

Metaproteomics analyses of three chronically petroleum-polluted sites

Project description:Crude oil is the one of the most important natural assets of humankind, yet it is a major environmental pollutant, in particular, in marine environments. One of the largest crude oil polluted areas in the word is the semi-enclosed Mediterranean Sea, where the metabolic potential of indigenous populations towards the chronic pollution at a large scale is yet to be defined, particularly in anaerobic and micro-anaerobic marine sites. Here, we provided a novel insight into the active microbial metabolism in sediments from three environments along the coastline of Italy. Microbial proteomes exhibited prevalence in anaerobic metabolism, not related to the biodegradation directly, suggesting the strong limitation by oxygen induced by the carbon overload. They also point at previously unrecognized metabolic coupling between methane and methanol utilizers as well as sulfur reducers in marine petroleum polluted sediments.

Project description:Sargassum is one of the most diverse brown algal genus with more than 150 known species, mostly benthic and few pelagic species. They contribute significantly to global primary production and serve as important habitat for wide range of marine organisms. Sargassum vulgare is one of the dominant habitat forming species along Mediterranean coast. Despite their huge ecological importance, it is relatively unknown how they will respond under future global climate change scenario. This work used de novo transcriptome sequencing approach to understand the molecular response of S. vulgare to chronic acidification at the shallow underwater volcanic CO2 vents off Ischia Island, Italy.
