Project description:<p>Functional ecology and biodiversity lack integrative reference data that combine the assessment of traits at different levels. Here, we integrate data from 16 field samples of complex thallose liverworts (order Marchantiales) collected from biological soil crust communities in Southern Sweden and Germany at three levels: (1) bioimaging (morphometric measurements from macro- and microscopy), (2) metabolomics (molecular computations performed on liquid chromatography high-resolution mass-spectrometry (UPLC/ESI-QTOF-MS) with data-dependent acquisition (DDA-MS) data) and (3) DNA marker sequencing. These data are used to construct a reference framework including a proposed naming scheme for the estimation of molecular traits and for demonstrating the systematic and standardized extraction of phenotypic and molecular traits for integration into the plant trait database TRY. Phylogenetic trees and partitioning around medoids are used to demonstrate the assessment of evolutionary relationships and the trait space connecting ecological hypotheses and documenting knowledge gains across domains. With our reference framework we want to encourage the combined assessment, reuse and integration of phenotypic and molecular traits into functional biodiversity research and related disciplines.</p>
Project description:To identify genes correlated to insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle, we studied 38 non-diabetic men from Malmö, Sweden. Briefly, the Malmö Exercise Intervention cohort consists of sedentary but otherwise healthy male subjects from southern Sweden. They all have European ancestry and 18 of them have a first-degree family member with T2D. The mean age and body mass index (BMI) were 37.71 ± 0.71 years and 28.47 ± 0.48 kg/m2, respectively, and the mean 1/the homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was 0.69 ± 0.04

Project description:The biomolecular composition of diatom underwater adhesives remains unknown as does the precise mechanism by which the secretion of adhesive material from the raphe slit is coupled to an intracellular motor that provides the force for cell motility. In this study we have characterized the previously identified frustule associated components (FACs) from the common fouling diatom Craspedostauors australis and demonstrated that they form a continuous cell wall coating. The FACs are encoded by a single polypeptide (caFAP1) that has a domain structure of alternating cysteine-rich and PTS-rich regions which is reminiscent of the gel-forming mucins. CaFAP1 is notably absent from the raphe slit and therefore does not play a direct role in cell adhesion and motility but may rather play an important role in lubrication and self-cleaning that is required for epipsammic benthic diatoms that grow attached to sand grains, or moving through sand.
