<i>Clostridium tetani</i> is the etiological agent of tetanus, a life-threatening bacterial infection. The most efficient protection strategy against tetanus is a vaccination with the <i>C. tetani</i> neurotoxin, which is inactivated by formaldehyde-crosslinking.
