A Genome-Wide Search for Greek and Jewish Admixture in the Kashmiri Population

Project description:The Kashmiri population is an ethno-linguistic group that resides in the Kashmir Valley in northern India. A longstanding hypothesis is that this population derives ancestry from Jewish and/or Greek sources. There is historical and archaeological evidence of ancient Greek presence in India and Kashmir. Further, some historical accounts suggest ancient Hebrew ancestry as well. To date, it has not been determined whether signatures of Greek or Jewish admixture can be detected in the Kashmiri population. Using genome-wide genotyping and admixture detection methods, we determined there are no significant or substantial signs of Greek or Jewish admixture in modern-day Kashmiris. The ancestry of Kashmiri Tibetans was also determined, which showed signs of admixture with populations from northern India and west Eurasia. These results contribute to our understanding of the existing population structure in northern India and its surrounding geographical areas.

Dissemination of Acinetobacter baumannii clones with OXA-23 Carbapenemase in Colombian hospitals.

Project description:During 2005, 66 carbapenem-resistant isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii were collected from seven tertiary-care hospitals participating in a nationwide surveillance network in Colombia. The isolates were multidrug resistant and produced the carbapenemases OXA-23 and OXA-51. Forty-five belonged to four clones while 21 were unique pulsotypes. One clone was present in two hospitals within one city, while another had spread between two hospitals in different cities. Blood, secretions, and abdominal fluids were the most frequent sites of isolation. This is the first description of widespread dissemination of OXA-23 in South America.

Emergence of OXA-48-type carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in German hospitals.

Project description:Nine carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolates collected from eight patients in five German hospitals were investigated. Six isolates produced the OXA-48 carbapenemase, and three isolates produced OXA-162, which is a point mutant form of OXA-48. Both carbapenemase genes were located on IncL/M-type conjugative plasmids. Insertion sequence IS1999 (truncated or not by IS1R) was located upstream of the bla(OXA-48) and bla(OXA-162) genes in all of the isolates. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis typing indicated the clonal transmission of an OXA-48-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae strain in two hospitals.

Emergence of New Non-Clonal Group 258 High-Risk Clones among Klebsiella pneumoniae Carbapenemase-Producing K. pneumoniae Isolates, France.

Project description:The worldwide spread of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) isolates was reported to be caused by dissemination of 1 clonal complex (i.e., clonal group [CG] 258, which includes sequence types [STs] 258 and 512). We conducted whole-genome sequencing and epidemiologic analysis of all KPC-Kp isolates in France in 2018 and found that new successful high-risk clones of ST147, ST307, ST231, and ST383 are now the main drivers of blaKPC genes. The blaKPC genes were mostly carried by Tn4401a and Tn4401d structures and a new non-Tn4401 element. Our epidemiologic investigations showed that the emergence of these non-CG258 KPC-Kp isolates in France was linked to dissemination of these clones from Portugal. Thus, KPC-Kp epidemiology has changed in Europe, at least in several non-KPC-endemic countries of western Europe, such as France and Portugal, where CG258 is not the most prevalent clone.
