Project description:A pilot-scale continuous flow reactor (CFR) was modified for hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of algae slurry under subcritical conditions to investigate the feasibility of scaling up from batch to continuous processing. Modifications included a novel dual filter system that can remove solids at system pressure and temperature, and undergo in-situ cleaning. Commissioning was carried out to address potential particle settling and clogging problems, and to estimate reactor transport characteristics. CFR performance was evaluated by running 31.4?L algae slurry with solids loadings of 3-5?wt.% under 325-350?°C and 18?MPa for 7?h. C and N elemental yields in HTL aqueous phase reached 39.0?wt.% and 61.8?wt.%, respectively. Future improvements to the CFR system will focus on higher solids loading and addition of in-line HTL liquid upgrading capabilities following the filtration system. •A high-temperature, high-pressure filtration system was designed to remove solids from HTL liquid/gaseous products at near reaction conditions to keep heavy oils in the liquid phase.•Uninterrupted reactor operation was achieved by cycling between the dual filter systems and performing in-situ filter cleaning.•Measured reactor residence time distributions were narrow and close to the calculated theoretical mean time.

Project description:The present study describes the isolation of a Thermococcus sp. strain 175 from the world‘s deepest hydrothermal vent sites known thus far – The Mid-Cayman Rise.consisting of two hydrothermal venting systems Bee Bee (or Piccard), at 4950m depth and Von Damm (or Walsh) at 2300m The strain is capable of growth over 0.1MPa (atm. Pressure) to 120MPa, the widest known range of pressure dependent growth. The study further explores piezophilic adaptation using comparative genomic tools. Insights into the transcriptome of this strain providers the first look into the transcriptional machinery of peizophilic Thermococci.

Project description:The present study investigates the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of harmful green macroalgal blooms at a temperature of 270 °C with, and without a catalyst with a holding time of 45 min. The effect of different catalysts on the HTL product yield was also studied. Two separation methods were used for recovering the biocrude oil yield from the solid phase. On comparision with other catalyst, Na2CO3 was found to produce higher yiled of bio-oil. The total bio-oil yield was 20.10% with Na2CO3, 18.74% with TiO2, 17.37% with CaO, and 14.6% without a catalyst. The aqueous phase was analyzed for TOC, COD, TN, and TP to determine the nutrient enrichment of water phase for microalgae cultivation. Growth of four microalgae strains viz., Chlorella Minutissima, Chlorella sorokiniana UUIND6, Chlorella singularis UUIND5 and Scenedesmus abundans in the aqueous phase were studied, and compared with a standard growth medium. The results indicate that harmful macroalgal blooms are a suitable feedstock for HTL, and its aqueous phase offers a promising nutrient source for microalgae.

Project description:At hydrothermal vent sites, chimneys consisting of sulfides, sulfates, and oxides are formed upon contact of reduced hydrothermal fluids with oxygenated seawater. The walls and surfaces of these chimneys are an important habitat for vent-associated microorganisms. We used community proteogenomics to investigate and compare the composition and in situ protein expression of microbial communities colonizing two actively venting hydrothermal chimneys from the Manus Basin back-arc spreading center (Papua New Guinea).

Project description:Currently, the enormous generation of contaminated disposed face masks raises many environmental concerns. The present study provides a novel route for efficient crude bio-oil production from disposed masks through co-hydrothermal liquefaction (Co-HTL) with Spirulina platensis grown in wastewater. Ultimate and proximate analysis confirmed that S. platensis contains relatively high nitrogen content (9.13%dw), which decreased by increasing the mask blend ratio. However, carbon and hydrogen contents were higher in masks (83.84 and 13.77%dw, respectively). In addition, masks showed 29.6% higher volatiles than S. platensis, which resulted in 94.2% lower ash content. Thermal decomposition of masks started at a higher temperature (≈330 °C) comparing to S. platensis (≈208 °C). The highest bio-oil yield was recorded by HTL of S. platensis and Co-HTL with 25% (w/w) masks at 300 °C, which showed insignificant differences with each other. GC/MS analysis of the bio-oil produced from HTL of algal biomass showed a high proportion of nitrogen- and oxygen-containing compounds (3.6% and 11.9%, respectively), with relatively low hydrocarbons (17.4%). Mask blend ratio at 25% reduced the nitrogen-containing compounds by 55.6% and enhanced the hydrocarbons by 43.7%. Moreover, blending of masks with S. platensis enhanced the compounds within the diesel range in favor of gasoline and heavy oil. Overall, the present study provides an innovative route for enhanced bio-oil production through mask recycling coupled with wastewater treatment.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s13399-021-01891-2.
