Metaproteomes of a cyanobacterial consortium from a haloalkaline bioreactor over a 12 day dark incubation

Project description:A photosynthetic cyanobacterial/microbial consortium was incubated in the dark for 12 days. During the course of this dark incubation, samples were taken every two days from the biomass portion and the liquid (supernatant) portion of the bioreactor. Metaproteomics analysis was conducted on these time series samples and binned and assembled metagenomes from the same samples were used as the database for protein identification.

Survey functional genes in Arctic marine sediment communities

Project description:The objective was to identify functional genes encoded by Fungi and fungal-like organisms to assess putative ecological roles Using the GeoChip microarray, we detected fungal genes involved in the complete assimilation of nitrate and the degradation of lignin, as well as evidence for Partitiviridae (a mycovirus) that likely regulates fungal populations in the marine environment. These results demonstrate the potential for fungi to degrade terrigenously-sourced molecules, such as permafrost and compete with algae for nitrate during blooms. Ultimately, these data suggest that marine fungi could be as important in oceanic ecosystems as they are in freshwater environments.

Adverse Health Effects of Cylindrospermopsin in Laboratory Animal (mouse) Studies in Single Day Study using Illumina Array

Project description:The goal of this project was to determine gene expression changes in the liver at different times post treatment with the common freshwater cyanobacterial toxin, cylindrospermopsin (CYN). The liver is generally considered to be the primary target of this toxin and all the data has been derived from livers of exposed animals as well as concurrent controls. Preliminary gene expression effects have been reported (Chernoff et al., 2010) and the current data extend the time course from 1 hour post exposure to 1-day post cessation of a 5-day period dosing period. Gene expression changes were determined in the livers of pregnant mice exposed to toxic levels of cyanobacterial toxin, cylindrospermopsin. Animals were exposed to a dose of CYN that elicited significant hepatic toxicity. This single dose study analyzed liver samples collected at 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 hours post dose. Gene expression changes were analyzed on the Illumina MouserRef-8v2.0 expression beadchip.
