Transcription profiling of Populus x canescens fine roots inoculated with Paxillus involutus in response to salt stress

ABSTRACT: Populus x canescens was inoculated with Paxillus involutus and grown in a climate chamber for 13 weeks. Afterwards, plants were salt stressed for 18 additional days with 150 mM NaCl in the nutrient solution. This resulted in 4 different treatments: no mycorrhiza
control (NC), mycorrhiza/control (MC), no mycorrhiza/salt (NS), mycorrhiza/salt (MS).

ORGANISM(S): Populus tremula x Populus alba

Ectomycorrhizas (EMs) alleviate stress tolerance of host plants, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are unknown. To elucidate the basis of EM-induced physiological changes and their involvement in stress adaptation, we investigated metabolic and transcriptional profiles in EM and non-EM roots of gray poplar (Populus x canescens) in the presence and absence of osmotic stress imposed by excess salinity. Colonization with the ectomycorrhizal fungus Paxillus involutus increased root cell volume  ...[more]
