Identification of candidate genes for morph-biased expression using heterlogous hybridization

ABSTRACT: This series represents the 16 arrays that were used to identify expression differences between the alternative morphs of Spadefoot toads (Spea bombifrons). We used Affymetrix GeneChip Xenopus tropicalis genome arrays, 8 biological replicates for two ecotypes (morphs).

ORGANISM(S): Spea bombifrons

Phenotypic plasticity--the capacity of a single genotype to produce different phenotypes in response to varying environmental conditions--is widespread. Yet, whether, and how, plasticity impacts evolutionary diversification is unclear. According to a widely discussed hypothesis, plasticity promotes rapid evolution because genes expressed differentially across different environments (i.e., genes with "biased" expression) experience relaxed genetic constraint and thereby accumulate variation faste  ...[more]
