A vast dataset for Kurdish handwritten digits and isolated characters recognition.

ABSTRACT: This article presents two massive datasets for central Kurdish handwriting digits and isolated characters named K-ZHMARA and K-PIT. The first dataset, named K-ZHMARA dataset, contains 70,000 images of Kurdish digits, 7000 images for each digit, and a printed A4 paper with a grid of 10 × 10 is used for data collection. Apart from digits, the K-PIT dataset includes 245,000 images of all Kurdish characters, 7000 images for each character; data was collected via a printed A4 paper with a grid of 12 × 10 for this dataset. Moreover, both datasets include 315,000 images. Python programming has been used to scan each piece of paper, segment, crop, resize, binarize, and invert the images via edge detection and image processing techniques.

Project description:To collect the handwritten format of separate Kurdish characters, each character has been printed on a grid of 14 × 9 of A4 paper. Each paper is filled with only one printed character so that the volunteers know what character should be written in each paper. Then each paper has been scanned, spliced, and cropped with a macro in photoshop to make sure the same process is applied for all characters. The grids of the characters have been filled mainly by volunteers of students from multiple universities in Erbil.

Mechanical Metamaterials for Handwritten Digits Recognition.

Project description:The increasing needs for new types of computing lie in the requirements in harsh environments. In this study, the successful development of a non-electrical neural network is presented that functions based on mechanical computing. By overcoming the challenges of low mechanical signal transmission efficiency and intricate layout design methodologies, a mechanical neural network based on bistable kirigami-based mechanical metamaterials have designed. In preliminary tests, the system exhibits high reliability in recognizing handwritten digits and proves operable in low-temperature environments. This work paves the way for a new, alternative computing system with broad applications in areas where electricity is not accessible. By integrating with the traditional electronic computers, the present system lays the foundation for a more diversified form of computing.

BanglaLekha-Isolated: A multi-purpose comprehensive dataset of Handwritten Bangla Isolated characters.

Project description:BanglaLekha-Isolated, a Bangla handwritten isolated character dataset is presented in this article. This dataset contains 84 different characters comprising of 50 Bangla basic characters, 10 Bangla numerals and 24 selected compound characters. 2000 handwriting samples for each of the 84 characters were collected, digitized and pre-processed. After discarding mistakes and scribbles, 1,66,105 handwritten character images were included in the final dataset. The dataset also includes labels indicating the age and the gender of the subjects from whom the samples were collected. This dataset could be used not only for optical handwriting recognition research but also to explore the influence of gender and age on handwriting. Full depth CNN classifier for handwritten and license plate characters recognition.

Project description:Character recognition is an important research field of interest for many applications. In recent years, deep learning has made breakthroughs in image classification, especially for character recognition. However, convolutional neural networks (CNN) still deliver state-of-the-art results in this area. Motivated by the success of CNNs, this paper proposes a simple novel full depth stacked CNN architecture for Latin and Arabic handwritten alphanumeric characters that is also utilized for license plate (LP) characters recognition. The proposed architecture is constructed by four convolutional layers, two max-pooling layers, and one fully connected layer. This architecture is low-complex, fast, reliable and achieves very promising classification accuracy that may move the field forward in terms of low complexity, high accuracy and full feature extraction. The proposed approach is tested on four benchmarks for handwritten character datasets, Fashion-MNIST dataset, public LP character datasets and a newly introduced real LP isolated character dataset. The proposed approach tests report an error of only 0.28% for MNIST, 0.34% for MAHDB, 1.45% for AHCD, 3.81% for AIA9K, 5.00% for Fashion-MNIST, 0.26% for Saudi license plate character and 0.97% for Latin license plate characters datasets. The license plate characters include license plates from Turkey (TR), Europe (EU), USA, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

Dataset for the recognition of Kurdish sound dialects.

Project description:Dialect recognition System (DRS) is a highly significant subject within the field of speech analysis. The performance of speech recognition systems is adversely impacted by factors such as the age, gender, and dialect features of the speaker. In order to address variations in dialect, it is possible to incorporate DRS into speech recognition systems. The system can be configured to utilize the appropriate speech recognition model based on the identification of the spoken dialect. Currently, there is a lack of available datasets suitable for the development of automatic dialect recognition systems specifically tailored for the Kurdish language. The proposed dataset under consideration is assessed using experimental data that has been gathered by personnel associated with the Computer Science Department at the University of Halabja. As the Kurdish language has three main dialects: Northern Kurdish (Badini variation), Central Kurdish (Sorani variant), and Hawrami, three dialects are included in the dataset.

DeepLontar dataset for handwritten Balinese character detection and syllable recognition on Lontar manuscript.

Project description:The digitalization of traditional Palmyra manuscripts, such as Lontar, is the government's main focus in efforts to preserve Balinese culture. Digitization is done by acquiring Lontar manuscripts through photos or scans. To understand Lontar's contents, experts usually carry out transliteration. Automatic transliteration using computer vision is generally carried out in several stages: character detection, character recognition, syllable recognition, and word recognition. Many methods can be used for detection and recognition, but they need data to train and evaluate the resulting model. In compiling the dataset, the data needs to be processed and labelled. This paper presented data collection and building datasets for detection and recognition tasks. Lontar was collected from libraries at universities in Bali. Data generation was carried out to produce 400 augmented images from 200 Lontar original images to increase the variousness of data. Annotations were performed to label each character producing over 100,000 characters in 55 character classes. This dataset can be used to train and evaluate performance in character detection and syllable recognition of new manuscripts.

AttentionMNIST: a mouse-click attention tracking dataset for handwritten numeral and alphabet recognition.

Project description:Multiple attention-based models that recognize objects via a sequence of glimpses have reported results on handwritten numeral recognition. However, no attention-tracking data for handwritten numeral or alphabet recognition is available. Availability of such data would allow attention-based models to be evaluated in comparison to human performance. We collect mouse-click attention tracking data from 382 participants trying to recognize handwritten numerals and alphabets (upper and lowercase) from images via sequential sampling. Images from benchmark datasets are presented as stimuli. The collected dataset, called AttentionMNIST, consists of a sequence of sample (mouse click) locations, predicted class label(s) at each sampling, and the duration of each sampling. On average, our participants observe only 12.8% of an image for recognition. We propose a baseline model to predict the location and the class(es) a participant will select at the next sampling. When exposed to the same stimuli and experimental conditions as our participants, a highly-cited attention-based reinforcement model falls short of human efficiency.
