Handwritten mathematical symbols dataset.

ABSTRACT: Due to the technological advances in recent years, paper scientific documents are used less and less. Thus, the trend in the scientific community to use digital documents has increased considerably. Among these documents, there are scientific documents and more specifically mathematics documents. In this context, we present our own dataset of handwritten mathematical symbols composed of 10,379 images. This dataset gathers Arabic characters, Latin characters, Arabic numerals, Latin numerals, arithmetic operators, set-symbols, comparison symbols, delimiters, etc.

Project description:To collect the handwritten format of separate Kurdish characters, each character has been printed on a grid of 14 × 9 of A4 paper. Each paper is filled with only one printed character so that the volunteers know what character should be written in each paper. Then each paper has been scanned, spliced, and cropped with a macro in photoshop to make sure the same process is applied for all characters. The grids of the characters have been filled mainly by volunteers of students from multiple universities in Erbil.

BanglaLekha-Isolated: A multi-purpose comprehensive dataset of Handwritten Bangla Isolated characters.

Project description:BanglaLekha-Isolated, a Bangla handwritten isolated character dataset is presented in this article. This dataset contains 84 different characters comprising of 50 Bangla basic characters, 10 Bangla numerals and 24 selected compound characters. 2000 handwriting samples for each of the 84 characters were collected, digitized and pre-processed. After discarding mistakes and scribbles, 1,66,105 handwritten character images were included in the final dataset. The dataset also includes labels indicating the age and the gender of the subjects from whom the samples were collected. This dataset could be used not only for optical handwriting recognition research but also to explore the influence of gender and age on handwriting. Thesaurus-based disambiguation of gene symbols.

Project description:BackgroundMassive text mining of the biological literature holds great promise of relating disparate information and discovering new knowledge. However, disambiguation of gene symbols is a major bottleneck.ResultsWe developed a simple thesaurus-based disambiguation algorithm that can operate with very little training data. The thesaurus comprises the information from five human genetic databases and MeSH. The extent of the homonym problem for human gene symbols is shown to be substantial (33% of the genes in our combined thesaurus had one or more ambiguous symbols), not only because one symbol can refer to multiple genes, but also because a gene symbol can have many non-gene meanings. A test set of 52,529 Medline abstracts, containing 690 ambiguous human gene symbols taken from OMIM, was automatically generated. Overall accuracy of the disambiguation algorithm was up to 92.7% on the test set.ConclusionThe ambiguity of human gene symbols is substantial, not only because one symbol may denote multiple genes but particularly because many symbols have other, non-gene meanings. The proposed disambiguation approach resolves most ambiguities in our test set with high accuracy, including the important gene/not a gene decisions. The algorithm is fast and scalable, enabling gene-symbol disambiguation in massive text mining applications.

ASM Based Synthesis of Handwritten Arabic Text Pages.

Project description:Document analysis tasks, as text recognition, word spotting, or segmentation, are highly dependent on comprehensive and suitable databases for training and validation. However their generation is expensive in sense of labor and time. As a matter of fact, there is a lack of such databases, which complicates research and development. This is especially true for the case of Arabic handwriting recognition, that involves different preprocessing, segmentation, and recognition methods, which have individual demands on samples and ground truth. To bypass this problem, we present an efficient system that automatically turns Arabic Unicode text into synthetic images of handwritten documents and detailed ground truth. Active Shape Models (ASMs) based on 28046 online samples were used for character synthesis and statistical properties were extracted from the IESK-arDB database to simulate baselines and word slant or skew. In the synthesis step ASM based representations are composed to words and text pages, smoothed by B-Spline interpolation and rendered considering writing speed and pen characteristics. Finally, we use the synthetic data to validate a segmentation method. An experimental comparison with the IESK-arDB database encourages to train and test document analysis related methods on synthetic samples, whenever no sufficient natural ground truthed data is available.

Convolutional ensembles for Arabic Handwritten Character and Digit Recognition.

Project description:A learning algorithm is proposed for the task of Arabic Handwritten Character and Digit recognition. The architecture consists on an ensemble of different Convolutional Neural Networks. The proposed training algorithm uses a combination of adaptive gradient descent on the first epochs and regular stochastic gradient descent in the last epochs, to facilitate convergence. Different validation strategies are tested, namely Monte Carlo Cross-Validation and K-fold Cross Validation. Hyper-parameter tuning was done by using the MADbase digits dataset. State of the art validation and testing classification accuracies were achieved, with average values of 99.74% and 99.47% respectively. The same algorithm was then trained and tested with the AHCD character dataset, also yielding state of the art validation and testing classification accuracies: 98.60% and 98.42% respectively.

Dataset on the EEG time-frequency representation in children with different levels of mathematical achievement.

Project description:This article presents the data related to the research paper entitled "The analysis of EEG coherence reflects middle childhood differences in mathematical achievement" (González-Garrido et al., 2018). The dataset is derived from the electroencephalographic (EEG) records registered from a total of 60 8-9-years-old children with different math skill levels (High: HA, Average: AA, and Low Achievement: LA) while performing a symbolic magnitude comparison task. The average brain patterns are shown through Time-Frequency Representations (TFR) for each group, and also grand-mean amplitudes within specific EEG epochs in a 19-electrode array are provided. Making this information publicly available for further analyses could significantly contribute to a better understanding on how math achievement in children associates with cognitive processing strategies.

From number sense to number symbols. An archaeological perspective.

Project description:How and when did hominins move from the numerical cognition that we share with the rest of the animal world to number symbols? Objects with sequential markings have been used to store and retrieve numerical information since the beginning of the European Upper Palaeolithic (42 ka). An increase in the number of markings and complexity of coding is observed towards the end of this period. The application of new analytical techniques to a 44-42 ka old notched baboon fibula from Border Cave, South Africa, shows that notches were added to this bone at different times, suggesting that devices to store numerical information were in use before the Upper Palaeolithic. Analysis of a set of incisions on a 72-60 ka old hyena femur from the Les Pradelles Mousterian site, France, indicates, by comparison with markings produced by modern subjects under similar constraints, that the incisions on the Les Pradelles bone may have been produced to record, in a single session, homologous units of numerical information. This finding supports the view that numerical notations were in use among archaic hominins. Based on these findings, a testable five-stage scenario is proposed to establish how prehistoric cultures have moved from number sense to the use of number symbols.This article is part of a discussion meeting issue 'The origins of numerical abilities'.

Training neural networks to encode symbols enables combinatorial generalization.

Project description:Combinatorial generalization-the ability to understand and produce novel combinations of already familiar elements-is considered to be a core capacity of the human mind and a major challenge to neural network models. A significant body of research suggests that conventional neural networks cannot solve this problem unless they are endowed with mechanisms specifically engineered for the purpose of representing symbols. In this paper, we introduce a novel way of representing symbolic structures in connectionist terms-the vectors approach to representing symbols (VARS), which allows training standard neural architectures to encode symbolic knowledge explicitly at their output layers. In two simulations, we show that neural networks not only can learn to produce VARS representations, but in doing so they achieve combinatorial generalization in their symbolic and non-symbolic output. This adds to other recent work that has shown improved combinatorial generalization under some training conditions, and raises the question of whether specific mechanisms or training routines are needed to support symbolic processing. Discretisation and continuity: The emergence of symbols in communication.

Project description:Vocal signalling systems, as used by humans and various non-human animals, exhibit discrete and continuous properties that can naturally be used to express discrete and continuous information, such as distinct words to denote objects in the world and prosodic features to convey the emotions of the speaker. However, continuous aspects are not always expressed with the continuous properties of an utterance but are frequently categorised into discrete symbols. While the existence of symbols in communication is self-evident, the emergence of discretisation from a continuous space is not well understood. In this paper, we investigate the emergence of discrete symbols in regions with a continuous semantics by simulating the learning process of two agents that acquire a shared signalling system. The task is formalised as a reinforcement learning problem with a continuous form and meaning space. We identify two causes for the emergence of discretisation that do not originate in discrete semantics: 1) premature convergence to sub-optimal signalling conventions and 2) topological mismatch between the continuous form space and the continuous semantic space. The insights presented in this paper shed light on the origins of discrete symbols, whose existence is assumed by a large body of research concerned with the emergence of syntactic structures and meaning in language.

Prefrontal cortex and flexible cognitive control: rules without symbols.

Project description:Human cognitive control is uniquely flexible and has been shown to depend on prefrontal cortex (PFC). But exactly how the biological mechanisms of the PFC support flexible cognitive control remains a profound mystery. Existing theoretical models have posited powerful task-specific PFC representations, but not how these develop. We show how this can occur when a set of PFC-specific neural mechanisms interact with breadth of experience to self organize abstract rule-like PFC representations that support flexible generalization in novel tasks. The same model is shown to apply to benchmark PFC tasks (Stroop and Wisconsin card sorting), accurately simulating the behavior of neurologically intact and frontally damaged people.
