µRT: A lightweight real-time middleware with integrated validation of timing constraints.

ABSTRACT: Middlewares are standard tools for modern software development in many areas, especially in robotics. Although such have become common for high-level applications, there is little support for real-time systems and low-level control. Therefore, µRT provides a lightweight solution for resource-constrained embedded systems, such as microcontrollers. It features publish-subscribe communication and remote procedure calls (RPCs) and can validate timing constraints at runtime. In contrast to other middlewares, µRT does not rely on specific transports for communication but can be used with any technology. Empirical results prove the small memory footprint, consistent temporal behavior, and predominantly linear scaling. The usability of µRT was found to be competitive with state-of-the-art solutions by means of a study.

Lightweight mobile network for real-time violence recognition

Project description:Most existing violence recognition methods have complex network structures and high cost of computation and cannot meet the requirements of large-scale deployment. The purpose of this paper is to reduce the complexity of the model to realize the application of violence recognition on mobile intelligent terminals. To solve this problem, we propose MobileNet-TSM, a lightweight network, which uses MobileNet-V2 as main structure. By incorporating temporal shift modules (TSM), which can exchange information between frames, the capability of extracting dynamic characteristics between consecutive frames is strengthened. Extensive experiments are conducted to prove the validity of this method. Our proposed model has only 8.49MB parameters and 175.86MB estimated total size. Compared with the existing methods, this method greatly reduced the model size, at the cost of an accuracy gap of about 3%. The proposed model has achieved accuracy of 97.959%, 97.5% and 87.75% on three public datasets (Crowd Violence, Hockey Fights, and RWF-2000), respectively. Based on this, we also build a real-time violence recognition application on the Android terminal. USRCAT: real-time ultrafast shape recognition with pharmacophoric constraints.

Project description:UnlabelledBackgroundLigand-based virtual screening using molecular shape is an important tool for researchers who wish to find novel chemical scaffolds in compound libraries. The Ultrafast Shape Recognition (USR) algorithm is capable of screening millions of compounds and is therefore suitable for usage in a web service. The algorithm however is agnostic of atom types and cannot discriminate compounds with similar shape but distinct pharmacophoric features. To solve this problem, an extension of USR called USRCAT, has been developed that includes pharmacophoric information whilst retaining the performance benefits of the original method.ResultsThe USRCAT extension is shown to outperform the traditional USR method in a retrospective virtual screening benchmark. Also, a relational database implementation is described that is capable of screening a million conformers in milliseconds and allows the inclusion of complex query parameters.ConclusionsUSRCAT provides a solution to the lack of atom type information in the USR algorithm. Researchers, particularly those with only limited resources, who wish to use ligand-based virtual screening in order to discover new hits, will benefit the most. Online chemical databases that offer a shape-based similarity method might also find advantage in using USRCAT due to its accuracy and performance. The source code is freely available and can easily be modified to fit specific needs.

Real-time prediction of cell division timing in developing zebrafish embryo.

Project description:Combination of live-imaging and live-manipulation of developing embryos in vivo provides a useful tool to study developmental processes. Identification and selection of target cells for an in vivo live-manipulation are generally performed by experience- and knowledge-based decision-making of the observer. Computer-assisted live-prediction method would be an additional approach to facilitate the identification and selection of the appropriate target cells. Herein we report such a method using developing zebrafish embryos. We choose V2 neural progenitor cells in developing zebrafish embryo as their successive shape changes can be visualized in real-time in vivo. We developed a relatively simple mathematical method of describing cellular geometry of V2 cells to predict cell division-timing based on their successively changing shapes in vivo. Using quantitatively measured 4D live-imaging data, features of V2 cell-shape at each time point prior to division were extracted and a statistical model capturing the successive changes of the V2 cell-shape was developed. By applying sequential Bayesian inference method to the model, we successfully predicted division-timing of randomly selected individual V2 cells while the cell behavior was being live-imaged. This system could assist pre-selecting target cells desirable for real-time manipulation-thus, presenting a new opportunity for in vivo experimental systems.

Real time optical Biopsy: Time-resolved Fluorescence Spectroscopy instrumentation and validation.

Project description:The Time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy (TR-FS) has the potential to differentiate tumor and normal tissue in real time during surgical excision. In this manuscript, we describe the design of a novel TR-FS device, along with preliminary data on detection accuracy for fluorophores in a mixture. The instrument is capable of near real-time fluorescence lifetime acquisition in multiple spectral bands and analysis. It is also able to recover fluorescence lifetime with sub-20ps accuracy as validated with individual organic fluorescence dyes and dye mixtures yielding lifetime values for standard fluorescence dyes that closely match with published data. We also show that TR-FS is able to quantify the relative concentration of fluorescence dyes in a mixture by the unmixing of lifetime decays. We show that the TR-FS prototype is able to identify in near-real time the concentrations of dyes in a complex mixture based on previously trained data. As a result, we demonstrate that in complex mixtures of fluorophores, the relative concentration information is encoded in the fluorescence lifetime across multiple spectral bands. We show for the first time the temporal and spectral measurements of a mixture of fluorochromes and the ability to differentiate relative concentrations of each fluorochrome mixture in real time.

Integrated active sensor system for real time vibration monitoring.

Project description:We report a self-powered, lightweight and cost-effective active sensor system for vibration monitoring with multiplexed operation based on contact electrification between sensor and detected objects. The as-fabricated sensor matrix is capable of monitoring and mapping the vibration state of large amounts of units. The monitoring contents include: on-off state, vibration frequency and vibration amplitude of each unit. The active sensor system delivers a detection range of 0-60 Hz, high accuracy (relative error below 0.42%), long-term stability (10000 cycles). On the time dimension, the sensor can provide the vibration process memory by recording the outputs of the sensor system in an extend period of time. Besides, the developed sensor system can realize detection under contact mode and non-contact mode. Its high performance is not sensitive to the shape or the conductivity of the detected object. With these features, the active sensor system has great potential in automatic control, remote operation, surveillance and security systems.

FPGA Integrated Optofluidic Biosensor for Real-Time Single Biomarker Analysis.

Project description:Integrated optofluidic biosensors can fill the need for sensitive, amplification-free, multiplex single molecule detection which is relevant for containing the spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Here, we demonstrate a rapid sample-to-answer scheme that uses a field programmable gate array (FPGA) to enable live monitoring of single particle fluorescence analysis on an optofluidic chip. Fluorescent nanobeads flowing through a micro channel are detected with 99% accuracy and particle concentrations in clinically relevant ranges from 3.4×104 to 3.4 × 106/ml are determined within seconds to a few minutes without the need for post-experiment data extraction and analysis. In addition, other extract salient experimental parameters such as dynamic flow rate changes can be monitored in real time. The sensor is validated with real-time fluorescence detection of single bacterial plasmid DNA at attomolar concentrations, showing excellent promise for implementation as a point of care (POC) diagnostic tool.

Temporo-cerebellar connectivity underlies timing constraints in audition.

Project description:The flexible and efficient adaptation to dynamic, rapid changes in the auditory environment likely involves generating and updating of internal models. Such models arguably exploit connections between the neocortex and the cerebellum, supporting proactive adaptation. Here, we tested whether temporo-cerebellar disconnection is associated with the processing of sound at short timescales. First, we identify lesion-specific deficits for the encoding of short timescale spectro-temporal non-speech and speech properties in patients with left posterior temporal cortex stroke. Second, using lesion-guided probabilistic tractography in healthy participants, we revealed bidirectional temporo-cerebellar connectivity with cerebellar dentate nuclei and crura I/II. These findings support the view that the encoding and modeling of rapidly modulated auditory spectro-temporal properties can rely on a temporo-cerebellar interface. We discuss these findings in view of the conjecture that proactive adaptation to a dynamic environment via internal models is a generalizable principle.

SAI-YOLO: A Lightweight Network for Real-Time Detection of Driver Mask-Wearing Specification on Resource-Constrained Devices.

Project description:Frequent occurrence and long-term existence of respiratory diseases such as COVID-19 and influenza require bus drivers to wear masks correctly during driving. To quickly detect whether the mask is worn correctly on resource-constrained devices, a lightweight target detection network SAI-YOLO is proposed. Based on YOLOv4-Tiny, the network incorporates the Inception V3 structure, replaces two CSPBlock modules with the RES-SEBlock modules to reduce the number of parameters and computational difficulty, and adds a convolutional block attention module and a squeeze-and-excitation module to extract key feature information. Moreover, a modified ReLU (M-ReLU) activation function is introduced to replace the original Leaky_ReLU function. The experimental results show that SAI-YOLO reduces the number of network parameters and calculation difficulty and improves the detection speed of the network while maintaining certain recognition accuracy. The mean average precision (mAP) for face-mask-wearing detection reaches 86% and the average precision (AP) for mask-wearing normative detection reaches 88%. In the resource-constrained device Raspberry Pi 4B, the average detection time after acceleration is 197 ms, which meets the actual application requirements.

Regulatory Implications of Integrated Real-Time Control Technology under Environmental Uncertainty.

Project description:Integrated real-time control (RTC) of urban wastewater systems, which can automatically adjust system operation to environmental changes, has been found in previous studies to be a cost-effective strategy to strike a balance between good surface water quality and low greenhouse gas emissions. However, its regulatory implications have not been examined. To investigate the effective regulation of wastewater systems with this technology, two permitting approaches are developed and assessed in this work: upstream-based permitting (i.e., environmental outcomes as a function of upstream conditions) and means-based permitting (i.e., prescription of an optimal RTC strategy). An analytical framework is proposed for permit development and assessment using a diverse set of high performing integrated RTC strategies and environmental scenarios (rainfall, river flow rate, and water quality). Results from a case study show that by applying means-based permitting, the best achievable, locally suitable environmental outcomes (subject to 10% deviation) are obtained in over 80% of testing scenarios (or all testing scenarios if 19% of performance deviation is allowed) regardless of the uncertain upstream conditions. Upstream-based permitting is less effective as it is difficult to set reasonable performance targets for a highly complex and stochastic environment.
