Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a large family of Ca<sup>2+</sup> and Zn<sup>2+</sup> dependent proteolytic enzymes, able to cleave the various components of the extracellular matrix (ECM), as well as a range of other regulatory molecules.
