Toward Enhanced Aerosol Particle Adsorption in Never-Bursting Bubble via Acoustic Levitation and Controlled Liquid Compensation.

ABSTRACT: Bubbles in air are ephemeral because of gravity-induced drainage and liquid evaporation, which severely limits their applications, especially as intriguing bio/chemical reactors. In this work, a new approach using acoustic levitation combined with controlled liquid compensation to stabilize bubbles is proposed. Due to the suppression of drainage by sound field and prevention of capillary waves by liquid compensation, the bubbles can remain stable and intact permanently. It has been found that the acoustically levitated bubble shows a significantly enhanced particle adsorption ability because of the oscillation of the bubble and the presence of internal acoustic streaming. The results shed light on the development of novel air-purification techniques without consuming any solid filters.

Ultrafast Bubble Bursting by Superamphiphobic Coatings.

Project description:Controlling bubble motion or passively bursting bubbles using solid interfaces is advantageous in numerous industrial applications including flotation, catalysis, electrochemical processes, and microfluidics. Current research has explored the formation, dissolution, pinning, and rupturing of bubbles on different surfaces. However, the ability to tune and control the rate of bubble bursting is not yet achieved. Scaling down surface-induced bubble bursting to just a few milliseconds is important for any application. In this work, the hierarchical structure of superamphiphobic surfaces is tuned in order to rapidly rupture contacting bubbles. Surfaces prepared using liquid flame spray show ultrafast bubble bursting (down to 2 ms) and superior durability. The coatings demonstrate excellent mechanical and chemical stability even in the presence of surface-active species. Air from the ruptured bubble is absorbed into the aerophilic Cassie-state. Long-term applicability is demonstrated by preventing the accumulation of air in the plastron via a connection of the plastron to the environment. The times recorded for bubble rupture and complete reorganization of air are reduced by approximately a factor of 3 compared to previously reported values. The concept is utilized to passively control surfactant-rich foam in froth flotation. Material collection efficiency increased by more than 60 times compared to controls.

Acoustic levitation with optimized reflective metamaterials.

Project description:The simplest and most commonly used acoustic levitator is comprised of a transmitter and an opposing reflecting surface. This type of device, however, is only able to levitate objects along one direction, at distances multiple of half of a wavelength. In this work, we show how a customised reflective acoustic metamaterial enables the levitation of multiple particles, not necessarily on a line and with arbitrary mutual distances, starting with a generic input wave. We establish a heuristic optimisation technique for the design of the metamaterial, where the local height of the surface is used to introduce delay patterns to the reflected signals. Our method stands for any type and number of sources, spatial resolution of the metamaterial and system's variables (i.e. source position, phase and amplitude, metamaterial's geometry, relative position of the levitation points, etc.). Finally, we explore how the strength of multiple levitation points changes with their relative distance, demonstrating sub-wavelength field control over levitating polystyrene beads into various configurations.

Bubble Rupture and Bursting Velocity of Complex Fluids.

Project description:We analyzed bubble rupture and hole opening dynamics in a non-Newtonian fluid by investigating the retraction process of thin films after inflation at different blowing rates. The experiments were modeled through a dimensional analysis, with the aim of establishing a general approach on the bubble rupture dynamics and discerning the role of viscous, elastic, surface, and inertial forces on the opening velocity, according to the nature of the specific fluid. A new mathematical model, which includes all possible contributions to the hole opening dynamics, was proposed, to the best of our knowledge for the first time. The experimental evidence on the opening velocity as a function of the inflation rate was found to be in good agreement with the prediction of the model. The sensitivity of our modeling was tested by comparing our results with the existing models of retracting velocity.

An Unusual Cause of Shock: Bursting a Bubble.

Project description:This study presents the case of a previously healthy 68-year-old woman who presented with shock from tamponade due to hemopericardium. Initial noninvasive imaging did not provide a clear etiology for the hemopericardium. Given the ongoing clinical deterioration and need for diagnosis and treatment, an exploratory sternotomy was performed with successful outcome.

Engineering multi-layered tissue constructs using acoustic levitation.

Project description:Engineering tissue structures that mimic those found in vivo remains a challenge for modern biology. We demonstrate a new technique for engineering composite structures of cells comprising layers of heterogeneous cell types. An acoustofluidic bioreactor is used to assemble epithelial cells into a sheet-like structure. On transferring these cell sheets to a confluent layer of fibroblasts, the epithelial cells cover the fibroblast surface by collective migration maintaining distinct epithelial and fibroblast cell layers. The collective behaviour of the epithelium is dependent on the formation of cell-cell junctions during levitation and contrasts with the behaviour of mono-dispersed epithelial cells where cell-matrix interactions dominate and hinder formation of discrete cell layers. The multilayered tissue model is shown to form a polarised epithelial barrier and respond to apical challenge. The method is useful for engineering a wide range of layered tissue types and mechanistic studies on collective cell migration.

Design approach of perforated labyrinth-based acoustic metasurface for selective acoustic levitation manipulation.

Project description:This paper proposes a metasurface design approach with perforated labyrinthine path coil structure to manipulate the acoustic transmission with inexpensive materials. The medium in the labyrinthine path coils in this design is air, but not limited to air. A systematic approach has been proposed for the unit cell design of acoustic metamaterials with adjustable resonance peak frequencies and bandgap width. The theory demonstrates that the length of pipe segments determines resonance peak frequencies and the cross-sectional area ratio adjusts the bandgap width. The proposed design approach uses an equivalent pipe circuit based analytical model to design the high transmission (high pass) and high reflection (low pass) unit cell. The simulation and experiment has been performed to evaluate the validity of the theory. Although there exists some assumptions in the theory, the theory still has enough accuracy to guide the metasurface design illustrated by the simulation and experiment results.

Compound jetting from bubble bursting at an air-oil-water interface.

Project description:Bursting of bubbles at a liquid surface is ubiquitous in a wide range of physical, biological, and geological phenomena, as a key source of aerosol droplets for mass transport across the interface. However, how a structurally complex interface, widely present in nature, mediates the bursting process remains largely unknown. Here, we document the bubble-bursting jet dynamics at an oil-covered aqueous surface, which typifies the sea surface microlayer as well as an oil spill on the ocean. The jet tip radius and velocity are altered with even a thin oil layer, and oily aerosol droplets are produced. We provide evidence that the coupling of oil spreading and cavity collapse dynamics results in a multi-phase jet and the follow-up droplet size change. The oil spreading influences the effective viscous damping, and scaling laws are proposed to quantify the jetting dynamics. Our study not only advances the fundamental understanding of bubble bursting dynamics, but also may shed light on the airborne transmission of organic matters in nature related to aerosol production.

Floating synthesis with enhanced catalytic performance via acoustic levitation processing.

Project description:Acoustic levitation supplies a containerless state to eliminate natural convection and heterogeneous crystal nucleation and thus provides a highly uniform and ultra clean condition in the confined levitating area. Herein, we attempt to make full use of these advantages to fabricate well dispersed metal nanoparticles. The gold nanoparticles, synthesized in an acoustically levitated droplet, exhibited a smaller size and improved catalytic performance in 4-nitrophenol reduction were synthesized in an acoustically levitated droplet. The sound field was simulated to understand the impact of acoustic levitation on gold nanoparticle growth with the aid of crystal growth theory. Chemical reducing reactions in the acoustic levitated space trend to occur in a better dispersed state because the sound field supplies continuous vibration energy. The bubble movement and the cavitation effect accelerate the nucleation, decrease the size, and the internal flow inside levitated droplet probably inhibit the particle fusion in the growth stage. These factors lead to a reduction in particle size compared with the normal wet chemical synthetic condition. The resultant higher surface area and more numerous active catalytic sites contribute to the improvement of the catalytic performance.

Size limits the formation of liquid jets during bubble bursting.

Project description:A bubble reaching an air-liquid interface usually bursts and forms a liquid jet. Jetting is relevant to climate and health as it is a source of aerosol droplets from breaking waves. Jetting has been observed for large bubbles with radii of R?100??m. However, few studies have been devoted to small bubbles (R<100??m) despite the entrainment of a large number of such bubbles in sea water. Here we show that jet formation is inhibited by bubble size; a jet is not formed during bursting for bubbles smaller than a critical size. Using ultrafast X-ray and optical imaging methods, we build a phase diagram for jetting and the absence of jetting. Our results demonstrate that jetting in bubble bursting is analogous to pinching-off in liquid coalescence. The coalescence mechanism for bubble bursting may be useful in preventing jet formation in industry and improving climate models concerning aerosol production.
