Contactless quasi-steady-state photoconductance (QSSPC) characterization of metal halide perovskite thin films.

ABSTRACT: We apply the contactless quasi-steady-state photoconductance (QSSPC) method to co-evaporated methyl ammonium lead iodide (MAPbI₃) perovskite thin-films. Using an adapted calibration for ultralow photoconductances, we extract the injection-dependent carrier lifetime of the MAPbI₃ layer. The lifetime is found to be limited by radiative recombination at the high injection densities applied during the QSSPC measurement, enabling the extraction of the electron and hole mobility sum in the MAPbI₃ using the known coefficient of radiative recombination of MAPbI₃. Combining the QSSPC measurement with transient photoluminescence measurements, performed at much lower injection densities, we obtain the injection-dependent lifetime curve over several orders of magnitude. From the resulting lifetime curve, we determine the achievable open-circuit voltage of the examined MAPbI₃ layer.

Chemical Vapor Deposited Mixed Metal Halide Perovskite Thin Films.

Project description:In this article, we used a two-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method to synthesize methylammonium lead-tin triiodide perovskite films, MAPb1-xSnxI3, with x varying from 0 to 1. We successfully controlled the concentration of Sn in the perovskite films and used Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) to quantify the composition of the precursor films for conversion into perovskite films. According to the RBS results, increasing the SnCl2 source amount in the reaction chamber translate into an increase in Sn concentration in the films. The crystal structure and the optical properties of perovskite films were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-Vis spectrometry. All the perovskite films depicted similar XRD patterns corresponding to a tetragonal structure with I4cm space group despite the precursor films having different crystal structures. The increasing concentration of Sn in the perovskite films linearly decreased the unit volume from about 988.4 Å3 for MAPbI3 to about 983.3 Å3 for MAPb0.39Sn0.61I3, which consequently influenced the optical properties of the films manifested by the decrease in energy bandgap (Eg) and an increase in the disorder in the band gap. The SEM micrographs depicted improvements in the grain size (0.3-1 µm) and surface coverage of the perovskite films compared with the precursor films.

Confining metal-halide perovskites in nanoporous thin films.

Project description:Controlling the size and shape of semiconducting nanocrystals advances nanoelectronics and photonics. Quantum-confined, inexpensive, solution-derived metal halide perovskites offer narrowband, color-pure emitters as integral parts of next-generation displays and optoelectronic devices. We use nanoporous silicon and alumina thin films as templates for the growth of perovskite nanocrystallites directly within device-relevant architectures without the use of colloidal stabilization. We find significantly blue-shifted photoluminescence emission by reducing the pore size; normally infrared-emitting materials become visibly red, and green-emitting materials become cyan and blue. Confining perovskite nanocrystals within porous oxide thin films drastically increases photoluminescence stability because the templates auspiciously serve as encapsulation. We quantify the template-induced size of the perovskite crystals in nanoporous silicon with microfocus high-energy x-ray depth profiling in transmission geometry, verifying the growth of perovskite nanocrystals throughout the entire thickness of the nanoporous films. Low-voltage electroluminescent diodes with narrow, blue-shifted emission fabricated from nanocrystalline perovskites grown in embedded nanoporous alumina thin films substantiate our general concept for next-generation photonic devices.

Control over Crystal Size in Vapor Deposited Metal-Halide Perovskite Films.

Project description:Understanding and controlling grain growth in metal halide perovskite polycrystalline thin films is an important step in improving the performance of perovskite solar cells. We demonstrate accurate control of crystallite size in CH3NH3PbI3 thin films by regulating substrate temperature during vacuum co-deposition of inorganic (PbI2) and organic (CH3NH3I) precursors. Films co-deposited onto a cold (-2 °C) substrate exhibited large, micrometer-sized crystal grains, while films that formed at room temperature (23 °C) only produced grains of 100 nm extent. We isolated the effects of substrate temperature on crystal growth by developing a new method to control sublimation of the organic precursor, and CH3NH3PbI3 solar cells deposited in this way yielded a power conversion efficiency of up to 18.2%. Furthermore, we found substrate temperature directly affects the adsorption rate of CH3NH3I, thus impacting crystal formation and hence solar cell device performance via changes to the conversion rate of PbI2 to CH3NH3PbI3 and stoichiometry. These findings offer new routes to developing efficient solar cells through reproducible control of crystal morphology and composition.

Scintillation Response Enhancement in Nanocrystalline Lead Halide Perovskite Thin Films on Scintillating Wafers.

Project description:Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals of the formula CsPbBr3 have recently been identified as potential time taggers in scintillating heterostructures for time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) imaging thanks to their ultrafast decay kinetics. This study investigates the potential of this material experimentally. We fabricated CsPbBr3 thin films on scintillating GGAG:Ce (Gd2.985Ce0.015Ga2.7Al2.3O12) wafer as a model structure for the future sampling detector geometry. We focused this study on the radioluminescence (RL) response of this composite material. We compare the results of two spin-coating methods, namely the static and the dynamic process, for the thin film preparation. We demonstrated enhanced RL intensity of both CsPbBr3 and GGAG:Ce scintillating constituents of a composite material. This synergic effect arises in both the RL spectra and decays, including decays in the short time window (50 ns). Consequently, this study confirms the applicability of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals as efficient time taggers for ultrafast timing applications, such as TOF-PET.

Time-Dependent Field Effect in Three-Dimensional Lead-Halide Perovskite Semiconductor Thin Films.

Project description:Charge transport in three-dimensional metal-halide perovskite semiconductors is due to a complex combination of ionic and electronic contributions, and its study is particularly relevant in light of their successful applications in photovoltaics as well as other opto- and microelectronic applications. Interestingly, the observation of field effect at room temperature in transistors based on solution-processed, polycrystalline, three-dimensional perovskite thin films has been elusive. In this work, we study the time-dependent electrical characteristics of field-effect transistors based on the model methylammonium lead iodide semiconductor and observe the drastic variations in output current, and therefore of apparent charge carrier mobility, as a function of the applied gate pulse duration. We infer this behavior to the accumulation of ions at the grain boundaries, which hamper the transport of carriers across the FET channel. This study reveals the dynamic nature of the field effect in solution-processed metal-halide perovskites and offers an investigation methodology useful to characterize charge carrier transport in such emerging semiconductors.

Dislocation-Assisted Quasi-Two-Dimensional Semiconducting Nanochannels Embedded in Perovskite Thin Films.

Project description:Defect engineering in perovskite thin films has attracted extensive attention recently due to the films' atomic-scale modification, allowing for remarkable flexibility to design novel nanostructures for next generation nanodevices. However, the defect-assisted three-dimensional nanostructures in thin film matrices usually has large misfit strain and thus causes unstable thin film structures. In contrast, defect-assisted one- or two-dimensional nanostructures embedded in thin films can sustain large misfit strains without relaxation, which make them suitable for defect engineering in perovskite thin films. Here, we reported the fabrication and characterization of edge-type misfit dislocation-assisted two-dimensional BiMnOx nanochannels embedded in SrTiO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/TbScO3 perovskite thin films. The nanochannels are epitaxially grown from the surrounding films without noticeable misfit strain. Diode-like current rectification was spatially observed at nanochannels due to the formation of Schottky junctions between BiMnOx nanochannels and conducting La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films. Such atomically scaled heterostructures constitute more flexible ultimate functional units for nanoscale electronic devices.

Determination of the True Lateral Grain Size in Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskite Thin Films.

Project description:In this letter, methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) thin films were examined via piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) and nanoindentation (NI) to determine if long-range atomic order existed across the full width and depth of the apparent grains. From the PFM, the piezoelectric response of the films was strongly correlated with low-index planes of the crystal structure and ferroelastic domains in macroscale solution-grown MAPbI3 crystals, which implied long-range order near the top surface. From the NI, it was found that the induced cracks were straight and extended across the full width of the apparent grains, which indicated that the long-range order was not limited to the near-surface region, but extended through the film thickness. Interestingly, the two MAPbI3 processes examined resulted in subtle differences in the extracted electro-mechanical and fracture properties, but exhibited similar power conversion efficiencies of >17% in completed devices.

Formamidinium Halide Perovskite and Carbon Nitride Thin Films Enhance Photoreactivity under Visible Light Excitation.

Project description:Photochemical and photocatalytic activity of adsorbates on surfaces is strongly dependent on the nature of a given substrate and its resonant absorption of the (visible) light excitation. An observation is reported here of the visible light photochemical response of formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr3) halide perovskite and carbon nitride (CN) thin-film materials (deposited on a SiO2/Si(100) substrate), both of which are known for their photovoltaic and photocatalytic properties. The goal of this study was to investigate the role of the substrate in the photochemical reactivity of an identical probe molecule, ethyl chloride (EC), when excited by pulsed 532 nm laser under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions. Postirradiation temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) measurements have indicated that the C-Cl bond dissociates following the visible light excitation to form surface-bound fragments that react upon surface heating to form primarily ethane and butane. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the FAPbBr3 films were recorded and decay lifetimes were measured, revealing a correlation between length of PL decay and the photoreactivity yield. We conclude that the FAPbBr3 material with its absorption spectrum in resonance with visible light excitation (532 nm) and longer PL lifetime leads to three times faster (larger cross-section) photoproduct formation compared with that on the CN substrate. These results contrast the behavior under ambient conditions where the CN materials are photochemically superior due, primarily, to their stability within humid environments.

Electron-Beam Irradiation Induced Regulation of Surface Defects in Lead Halide Perovskite Thin Films.

Project description:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) have been intensively studied due to their fascinating optoelectronic performance. Electron microscopy and related characterization techniques are powerful to figure out their structure-property relationships at the nanoscale. However, electron beam irradiation usually causes damage to these beam-sensitive materials and thus deteriorates the associated devices. Taking a widely used CH3NH3PbI3 film as an example, here, we carry out a comprehensive study on how electron beam irradiation affects its properties. Interestingly, our results reveal that photoluminescence (PL) intensity of the film can be significantly improved along with blue-shift of emission peak at a specific electron beam dose interval. This improvement stems from the reduction of trap density at the CH3NH3PbI3 surface. The knock-on effect helps expose a fresh surface assisted by the surface defect-induced lowering of displacement threshold energy. Meanwhile, the radiolysis process consistently degrades the crystal structure and weaken the PL emission with the increase of electron beam dose. Consequently, the final PL emission comes from a balance between knock-on and radiolysis effects. Taking advantage of the defect regulation, we successfully demonstrate a patterned CH3NH3PbI3 film with controllable PL emission and a photodetector with enhanced photocurrent. This work will trigger the application of electron beam irradiation as a powerful tool for perovskite materials processing in micro-LEDs and other optoelectronic applications.
