Human telomeres are tandem arrays that are predominantly composed of 5'-TTAGGG-3' nucleotide sequences at the terminal ends of chromosomes. These sequences serve 2 primary functions: they preserve genomic integrity by protecting the ends of chromosomes, preventing inappropriate degradation by DNA repair mechanisms, and they prevent loss of genetic information during cellular division.
