Single-Wall Carbon Nanohorn Langmuir-Schaefer Films.

ABSTRACT: A suspension of single-walled carbon nanohorn (SWCNH) aggregates with a size of approx. 50 nm was used to create a floating film at the water-air interface. The film was then transferred onto large-area quartz substrates using the Langmuir-Schaefer technique at varied surface pressures. The packaging and arrangement of SWCNHs in the film can be controlled during the process. The resulting films' optical and electrical properties were investigated, and the highest electrical conductivity and figure of merit parameter values were observed for the film transferred at surface pressure near the collapse point. These films had a surface density of less than 5 μg cm^-2, making them ideal for use in ultra-light sensors, supercapacitors, and photovoltaic cell electrodes. The preparation and properties of the Langmuir-Schaefer films of carbon nanohorns are reported for the first time.

Project description:Selective synthesis of particles of angstrom to nanometer size consisting of one to many metal atoms is instrumental in various applications, but it has been hampered by the tendency of the metal atom to form large clusters. We found, as studied by the state-of-the-art electron microscopic technique, a strategy to produce metal-containing nanoparticles isolated from each other by depositing metal atoms in a hydrophilic hole on or in the interior of a carbon nanotube as demonstrated by the reaction of Gd(OAc)(3) with oxidized single-wall nanohorns. Besides the potential utilities of the deposited metal clusters, the metal deposition protocol provides a method to control permeation of molecules through such openings.

Hall effect in gated single-wall carbon nanotube films.

Project description:The presence of hopping carriers and grain boundaries can sometimes lead to anomalous carrier types and density overestimation in Hall-effect measurements. Previous Hall-effect studies on carbon nanotube films reported unreasonably large carrier densities without independent assessments of the carrier types and densities. Here, we have systematically investigated the validity of Hall-effect results for a series of metallic, semiconducting, and metal-semiconductor-mixed single-wall carbon nanotube films. With carrier densities controlled through applied gate voltages, we were able to observe the Hall effect both in the n- and p-type regions, detecting opposite signs in the Hall coefficient. By comparing the obtained carrier types and densities against values derived from simultaneous field-effect-transistor measurements, we found that, while the Hall carrier types were always correct, the Hall carrier densities were overestimated by up to four orders of magnitude. This significant overestimation indicates that thin films of one-dimensional SWCNTs are quite different from conventional hopping transport systems.

Ultrahigh-performance transparent conductive films of carbon-welded isolated single-wall carbon nanotubes.

Project description:Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are ideal for fabricating transparent conductive films because of their small diameter, good optical and electrical properties, and excellent flexibility. However, a high intertube Schottky junction resistance, together with the existence of aggregated bundles of SWCNTs, leads to a degraded optoelectronic performance of the films. We report a network of isolated SWCNTs prepared by an injection floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition method, in which crossed SWCNTs are welded together by graphitic carbon. Pristine SWCNT films show a record low sheet resistance of 41 ohm □-1 at 90% transmittance for 550-nm light. After HNO3 treatment, the sheet resistance further decreases to 25 ohm □-1. Organic light-emitting diodes using this SWCNT film as anodes demonstrate a low turn-on voltage of 2.5 V, a high current efficiency of 75 cd A-1, and excellent flexibility. Investigation of isolated SWCNT-based field-effect transistors shows that the carbon-welded joints convert the Schottky contacts between metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs into near-ohmic ones, which significantly improves the conductivity of the transparent SWCNT network. Our work provides a new avenue of assembling individual SWCNTs into macroscopic thin films, which demonstrate great potential for use as transparent electrodes in various flexible electronics.

Graphene/Carbon Dot Hybrid Thin Films Prepared by a Modified Langmuir-Schaefer Method.

Project description:The special electronic, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties of graphene resulting from its 2D nature, as well as the ease of functionalizing it through a simple acid treatment, make graphene an ideal building block for the development of new hybrid nanostructures with well-defined dimensions and behavior. Such hybrids have great potential as active materials in applications such as gas storage, gas/liquid separation, photocatalysis, bioimaging, optoelectronics, and nanosensing. In this study, luminescent carbon dots (C-dots) were sandwiched between oxidized graphene sheets to form novel hybrid multilayer films. Our thin-film preparation approach combines self-assembly with the Langmuir-Schaefer deposition and uses graphene oxide nanosheets as template for grafting C-dots in a bidimensional array. Repeating the cycle results in a facile and low-cost layer-by-layer procedure for the formation of highly ordered hybrid multilayers, which were characterized by photoluminescence, UV-visible, X-ray photoelectron, and Raman spectroscopies, as well as X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy.

Defect-Induced Efficient Heteroepitaxial Growth of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes @ Hexagonal Boron Nitride Films.

Project description:Carbon nanotube-based derivatives have attracted considerable research interest due to their unique structure and fascinating physicochemical properties. However, the controlled growth mechanism of these derivatives remains unclear, and the synthesis efficiency is low. Herein, we proposed a defect-induced strategy for the efficient heteroepitaxial growth of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)@hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) films. Air plasma treatment was first performed to generate defects on the wall of SWCNTs. Then, atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition was conducted to grow h-BN on the surface of SWCNTs. Controlled experiments combined with first-principles calculations revealed that the induced defects on the wall of SWCNTs function as nucleation sites for the efficient heteroepitaxial growth of h-BN.

Carbon Nanohorn-Modified Carbon Fiber Microelectrodes for Dopamine Detection.

Project description:Carbon nanohorns (CNHs), closed cone-shaped cages of sp 2-hybridized carbons, are a promising nanomaterial to improve carbon-fiber microelectrode (CFME) dues to their high specific surface area and edge planes, but few studies have tested their electrochemical properties. Here, we tested the dopamine detection at electrodeposited CNHs on CFME (CNH/CFME). The optimized concentration of CNHs in the deposition solution is 0.5 mg/mL, and the optimized electrodeposition waveform is 10 cycles of triangular waveform scanned from -1.0 V and +1.0 V at 50 mV/s. Using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry, the optimized CNH/CFME enhances dopamine peak current to 2.3 ± 0.2 times that of the CFME. To further increase the current, CNH/CFMEs were oxidized in NaOH (ox-CNH/CFME), which creates more defects and surface oxide groups to adsorb dopamine. The oxidative etching further increases the peak current to 3.5 ± 0.2 times of the CFME, and ox-CNH/CFME had a limit of detection of 6 ± 2 nM. The dopamine anodic current at ox-CNH/CFME was stable for 8 h of continuous scanning. The ox-CNH/CFME enhanced the anodic peak current for other cationic neurotransmitters including epinephrine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, but less enhancement was found for ascorbic acid, showing higher selectivity for cationic molecules. CNHs also decreased tissue biofouling at CFME. Thus, electrodeposited CNHs are a promising new method for increasing the surface area and current of CFMEs for dopamine detection.

Facile preparation of air-stable n-type thermoelectric single-wall carbon nanotube films with anionic surfactants.

Project description:Thermoelectric generators based on single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have great potential for use in wearable and skin electronics because of their lightweight and mechanically soft structure. However, the fabrication of air-stable n-type thermoelectric SWCNTs using conventional processes is challenging. Herein, we propose a facile process for fabricating air-stable n-type SWCNT films with anionic surfactants via drop casting followed by heat treatment. We examined different surfactants (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate, Sodium Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate, and Sodium Cholate) and heat-treatment temperatures. The optimal SWCNT film maintained the n-type Seebeck coefficient for 35 days. Moreover, to further extend the n-type Seebeck coefficient maintenance, we periodically reheated the SWCNT film with a surfactant that had returned to the p-type Seebeck coefficient. The reheated film recovered the n-type Seebeck coefficient, and the effect of the reheating treatment lasted for several reheating cycles. Finally, we elucidated a simple mechanism for realizing an air-stable n-type Seebeck coefficient based on spectroscopic analyses of the SWCNT films.

Influence of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotube Suspension on the Mechanical Properties of Polymeric Films and Electrospun Scaffolds.

Project description:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are used in applications ranging from electrical engineering to medical device manufacturing. It is well known that the addition of nanotubes can influence the mechanical properties of various industrial materials, including plastics. Electrospinning is a popular method for fabricating nanomaterials, widely suggested for polymer scaffold manufacturing. In this study, we aimed to describe the influence of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) suspensions on polymeric poured films and electrospun scaffolds and to investigate their structural and mechanical properties obtained from various compositions. To obtain films and electrospun scaffolds of 8 mm diameter, we used poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) and poly(cyclohexene carbonate) (PCHC) solutions containing several mass fractions of SWCNT. The samples were characterized using tensile tests, atomic force and scanning electronic microscopy (AFM and SEM). All the studied SWCNT concentrations were shown to decrease the extensibility and strength of electrospun scaffolds, so SWCNT use was considered unsuitable for this technique. The 0.01% mass fraction of SWCNT in PCL films increased the polymer strength, while fractions of 0.03% and more significantly decreased the polymer strength and extensibility compared to the undoped polymer. The PHCH polymeric films showed a similar behavior with an extremum at 0.02% concentration for strength at break.

Langmuir films at the oil/water interface revisited.

Project description:We studied monomolecular layers at the oil/water interface (O/Wint) in a Langmuir interfacial trough using egg-yolk phosphatidylcholine (EPC) (the model phospholipid) and Vaseline (VAS) as oil phase. The temporal dynamics in the surface pressure (π) evolution depended on the method (spreading/adsorption) used for monolayers preparation and reflected the different distribution of EPC between all the system compartments (bulk phases and interfaces). We distinguished between EPC located either stable at the interface or hopping between the interface and bulk phases. The size order of the apparent mean molecular area, at constant π, of EPC at different interfaces (EPCO/W > EPC/VAS0.02;A/W > EPCA/W), suggested that VAS molecules intercalated between the hydrocarbon chains of EPCO/W, at a molar fraction xVAS > 0.02. However, EPC/VAS0.02;A/W showed the highest compressional free energy. This leaded us to study the EPC/VAS0.02 mixture at A/W by Brewster Angle Microscopy (BAM), finding that upon compression VAS segregated over the monolayer, forming non-coalescent lenses (as predicted by the spreading coefficient S = -13 mN/m) that remained after decompression and whose height changed (increase/decrease) accompanied the compression/decompression cycle. At the O/Wint, while some VAS molecules remained at the interface up to the collapse, others squeezed out towards the VAS bulk phase with an energy requirement lower than towards the air.

Colors of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:Although single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) exhibit various colors in suspension, directly synthesized SWCNT films usually appear black. Recently, a unique one-step method for directly fabricating green and brown films has been developed. Such remarkable progress, however, has brought up several new questions. The coloration mechanism, potentially achievable colors, and color controllability of SWCNTs are unknown. Here, a quantitative model is reported that can predict the specific colors of SWCNT films and unambiguously identify the coloration mechanism. Using this model, colors of 466 different SWCNT species are calculated, which reveals a broad spectrum of potentially achievable colors of SWCNTs. The calculated colors are in excellent agreement with existing experimental data. Furthermore, the theory predicts the existence of many brilliantly colored SWCNT films, which are experimentally expected. This study shows that SWCNTs as a form of pure carbon, can display a full spectrum of vivid colors, which is expected to complement the general understanding of carbon materials.
