Project description:The aim of this study was to compare the effect of different mechanical surface treatments and chemical bonding protocols on the tensile bond strength (TBS) of aged composite. Bar specimens were produced using a nanohybrid resin composite and aged in distilled water for 30 days. Different surface treatments (diamond bur, phosphoric acid, silane, and sandblasting with Al₂O₃ or CoJet Sand), as well as bonding protocols (Primer/Adhesive) were used prior to application of the repair composite. TBS of the specimens was measured and the results were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Student-Newman-Keuls test (α = 0.05). Mechanically treated surfaces were characterized under SEM and by profilometry. The effect of water aging on the degree of conversion was measured by means of FTIR-ATR spectroscopy. An important increase in the degree of conversion was observed after aging. No significant differences in TBS were observed among the mechanical surface treatments, despite variations in surface roughness profiles. Phosphoric acid etching significantly improved repair bond strength values. The cohesive TBS of the material was only reached using resin bonding agents. Application of an intermediate bonding system plays a key role in achieving reliable repair bond strengths, whereas the kind of mechanical surface treatment appears to play a secondary role.

Project description:Introduction: Successful repair of composite restorations depends on a strong bond between the old composite and the repair composite. This study sought to assess the repair shear bond strength of aged silorane-based composite following surface treatment with Nd:YAG, Er,Cr:YSGG and CO2 lasers. Methods: Seventy-six Filtek silorane composite cylinders were fabricated and aged by 2 months of water storage at 37°C. The samples were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=19) of no surface treatment (group 1) and surface treatment with Er,Cr:YSGG (group 2), Nd:YAG (group 3) and CO2 (group 4) lasers. The repair composite was applied and the shear bond strength was measured. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey posthoc test. Prior to the application of the repair composite, 2 samples were randomly selected from each group and topographic changes on their surfaces following laser irradiation were studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Seventeen other samples were also fabricated for assessment of cohesive strength of composite. Results: The highest and the lowest mean bond strength values were 8.99 MPa and 6.69 MPa for Er,Cr:YSGG and control groups, respectively. The difference in the repair bond strength was statistically significant between the Er,Cr:YSGG and other groups. Bond strength of the control, Nd:YAG and CO2 groups was not significantly different. The SEM micrographs revealed variable degrees of ablation and surface roughness in laser-treated groups. Conclusion: Surface treatment with Er,Cr:YSGG laser significantly increase the repair bond strength of aged silorane-based composite resin.

Project description:Polymerization shrinkage of resin composite can compromise the longevity of restorations. To minimize this problem, the monomeric composition of composites have been modified. The objective of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis to assess the clinical behavior of restorations performed with low polymerization shrinkage resin composite in comparison with traditional methacrylates-based resin composite. This systematic review was registered at Prospero data system (CRD42015023940). Studies were searched in the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Lilacs and EMBASE according to a predefined search strategy. The inclusion criteria were as follow: (1) randomized controlled clinical trials with at least six months of follow-up; (2) studies investigating composites with monomers designed to reduce polymerization shrinkage; (3) studies conducted with class I or II restorations in the permanent dentition; and (4) studies that assessed at least one of the following criteria: marginal integrity/adaptation, marginal discoloration, recurent caries, retention of composite restorations, and postoperative sensitivity. Two independent reviewers analyzed the articles to determine inclusion and risk of bias. The search conducted in the databases resulted in a total of 14,217 studies. After reviewing the references and citations, 21 articles remained. The longest clinical follow-up time was 60 months. The meta-analysis of the data in the included studies demonstrated that only one variable (marginal adaptation after 12 months) showed statistically significant outcomes, in which methacrylates-based composites presented significantly better results than resin composites containing modified monomers. The good level of the scientific evidence as well as the overall low risk of bias of the included studies indicate that composites with silorane, ormocer or bulk-fill type modified monomers have a clinical performance similar to conventional resin composites.

Project description:This study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strength of self-adhesive flowable resin composite on both enamel and dentin and investigate whether surface pretreatment with a phosphoric acid etch affects the bond strength. In this in vitro study, 80 sound human premolars were flattened to create (40) uniform enamel (E) and (40) dentin (D) surfaces. Groups were divided according to surface pretreatment: E1 : Scotchbond™ Universal Etchant + Single Bond Universal Adhesive + Filtek™ Z350 XT flowable composite; E2: Single Bond Universal self-etch adhesive + Filtek Z350 XT flowable composite; E3 : Scotchbond Universal Etchant + Fusio Liquid Dentin self-adhesive flowable composite; E4: Fusio Liquid Dentin self-adhesive flowable composite; D1 : Scotchbond Universal Etchant + Single Bond Universal Adhesive + Filtek Z350 XT flowable composite; D2: Single Bond Universal self-etch adhesive + Filtek Z350 XT flowable composite; D3: Scotchbond Universal Etchant + Fusio Liquid Dentin self-adhesive flowable composite; D4: Fusio Liquid Dentin self-adhesive flowable composite. After 2500 thermal cycles, the SBS was measured with a universal testing machine. One-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test for multiple comparisons were used to compare results. Two-way ANOVA was done to observe the significance of interaction between the type of surface and treatment. The maximum (49.38 ± 1.23 MPa) and minimum (21.41 ± 5.27 MPa) SBS values were noted in groups D1 and E2, respectively. Shear bond test results showed that self-adhesive flowable composite exhibited similar shear bond strengths on enamel and dentin and the bond strength improved with selective acid etching.

Project description:A methyl methacrylate (MMA) -based resin cement is one of the popular luting agents to bond a dental restorative material in dental treatments. Bond strength of the MMA-based resin cement with adhesive primer to each restorative material is important for clinical success in prosthodontic treatments without debonding or fracture failures of the restoration such as a dental crown and post. However, open data on the bonding properties of combined use of the MMA-based resin cement and appropriate primers is limited. This article provides data on the bond strength and fracture mode of the 4-META/MMA-TBB resin cement (MMA-based resin cement) to the restorative materials (silver alloy, gold alloy, feldspathic porcelain, and zirconia) with four types of primer. Each restorative material was applied with the adhesive primer and bonded with the MMA-based resin cement. The cement-bonded samples were subjected to a thermocycling in which the materials were immersed alternately in water baths at 5 °C and 55 °C for 10,000 cycles. The bond strength between the resin cement and each restorative material was measured by means of a conventional tensile bond strength test. The fracture modes of the examined samples were observed and determined. The measured tensile bond strengths were statistically analysed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey's multiple comparison test.

Project description:Background. Repairing aged composite resin is a challenging process. Many surface treatment options have been proposed to this end. This study evaluated the effect of different surface treatments on the shear bond strength (SBS) of nano-filled composite resin repairs. Methods. Seventy-five cylindrical specimens of a Filtek Z350XT composite resin were fabricated and stored in 37°C distilled water for 24 hours. After thermocycling, the specimens were divided into 5 groups according to the following surface treatments: no treatment (group 1); air abrasion with 50-μm aluminum oxide particles (group 2); irradiation with Er:YAG laser beams (group 3); roughening with coarse-grit diamond bur + 35% phosphoric acid (group 4); and etching with 9% hydrofluoric acid for 120 s (group 5). Another group of Filtek Z350XT composite resin samples (4×6 mm) was fabricated for the measurement of cohesive strength (group 6). A silane coupling agent and an adhesive system were applied after each surface treatment. The specimens were restored with the same composite resin and thermocycled again. A shearing force was applied to the interface in a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests (P < 0.05). Results. One-way ANOVA indicated significant differences between the groups (P < 0.05). SBS of controls was significantly lower than the other groups; differences between groups 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 were not significant. Surface treatment with diamond bur + 35% phosphoric acid resulted in the highest bond strength. Conclusion. All the surface treatments used in this study improved the shear bond strength of nanofilled composite resin used.

Project description:The dental prophylactic cleaning of a damaged resin-based composite (RBC) restoration with sodium bicarbonate can change the surface characteristics and influence the repair bond strength. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of sodium bicarbonate (SB) and aluminum oxide (AO) surface treatments on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of repaired, aged RBC. Bar specimens were prepared from microhybrid RBC and aged in deionized water for 8 weeks. Different surface treatments (AO air-abrasion; SB air-polishing), as well as cleaning (phosphoric acid, PA; ethylene-diamine-tetraacetic-acid, EDTA) and adhesive applications (single bottle etch-and-rinse, ER; universal adhesive, UA), were used prior to the application of the repair RBC. Not aged and aged but not surface treated RBCs were used as positive and negative controls, respectively. The repaired blocks were cut into sticks using a precision grinding machine. The specimens were tested for tensile fracture and the µTBS values were calculated. Surface characteristics were assessed using scanning electron microscopy. AO-PA-UA (62.6 MPa) showed a 20% increase in µTBS compared to the NC (50.2 MPa), which proved to be the most significant. This was followed by SB-EDTA-UA (58.9 MPa) with an increase of 15%. In addition to AO-PA-UA, SB-EDTA-UA could also be a viable alternative in the RBC repair protocol.

Project description:This study was designed to evaluate the effect of hot-etching surface treatment on the shear bond strength between zirconia ceramics and two commercial resin cements. Ceramic cylinders (120 units; length: 2.5 mm; diameter: 4.7 mm) were randomly divided into 12 groups (n = 10) according to different surface treatments (blank control; airborne-particle-abrasion; hot-etching) and different resin cements (Panavia F2.0; Superbond C and B) and whether or not a thermal cycling fatigue test (5°-55° for 5000 cycles) was performed. Flat enamel surfaces, mounted in acrylic resin, were bonded to the zirconia discs (diameter: 4.7 mm). All specimens were subjected to shear bond strength testing using a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. All data were statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and multiple-comparison least significant difference tests (α = 0.05). Hot-etching treatment produced higher bond strengths than the other treatment with both resin cements. The shear bond strength of all groups significantly decreased after the thermal cycling test; except for the hot-etching group that was cemented with Panavia F2.0 (p < 0.05). Surface treatment of zirconia with hot-etching solution enhanced the surface roughness and bond strength between the zirconia and the resin cement.

Project description:The aim of this research is to evaluate cyclic (CSBS) and static shear bond strengths (SSBS) of metal orthodontic brackets bonded to composite laminates using different conditioning protocols.A total of 80 direct nanofilled composite laminate veneers were prepared on permanent incisors and divided into four equal groups according to different surface treatments. In group 1, diamond bur was used. In group 2, microetcher (50-?m alumina particles) was utilized. In group 3, 38% phosphoric acid treatment for 60 s was done. In group 4 (control group), metal brackets were bonded to the untreated veneer surfaces using no-mix adhesive resin. SSBS testing was carried out for ten specimens, while CSBS testing was done for another ten specimens from each group. The data were subjected to analysis of variance and Scheffe post hoc test. The chi-square test was used to determine significant differences in the adhesive remnant index scores among different groups.Statistically significant difference was only found between SSBS of brackets bonded when surface treatment was done using the diamond bur, microetcher, and the phosphoric acid at P<0.05. With regard to CSBS, the use of bur treatment and microetching achieved the highest values; however, there was no significant difference between these two groups. With phosphoric acid, surface treatment achieved the lowest CSBS value; there was no significant difference between this group and the control group. The SSBS was significantly higher than CSBS in all groups.Roughening composite laminate veneers with either diamond bur or microetcher could be used successfully as an alternative to provide higher bond strength than phosphoric acid surface treatment. Cyclic loading significantly decreased bond strength.

Project description:ObjectivesTo assess the impact of the age of resin-based composite (RBC) restorations used for deep margin elevation (DME) on the marginal quality and fracture resistance of inlays.Materials and methodsPermanent human molars with direct RBC restorations, involving the mesial, occlusal, and distal surface (MOD), were allocated to four groups (each n = 12). Half of the teeth underwent thermomechanical loading including 240,000 occlusal load cycles and 534 thermal cycles (TML, 5 °C/55 °C; 49 N, 1.7 Hz). With RBC left in one proximal box as DME, all teeth received MOD inlays, made from lithium disilicate (LDS) or a polymer-infiltrated ceramic network material (PICN). The restored teeth underwent TML including 1.2 million occlusal cyclic loadings and 2673 thermal cycles. The marginal quality was assessed at baseline and after both runs of TML. Load-to-fracture tests were performed. The statistical analysis comprised multiple linear regressions (α = 0.05).ResultsSimulated aging of RBC restorations had no significant effect on the marginal quality at the interface between the RBC and the tooth and the RBC and the inlay (p ≥ 0.247). Across time points, higher percentages of non-continuous margin were observed between the inlay and the tooth than between the tooth and the RBC (p ≤ 0.039). The age of the DME did not significantly affect the fracture resistance (p ≥ 0.052).ConclusionsArtificial aging of RBC restorations used for DME had no detrimental effect on the marginal quality and fracture resistance of LDS and PICN inlays.Clinical relevanceThis laboratory study suggests that-in select cases-intact, direct RBC restorations not placed immediately before the delivery of an indirect restoration may be used for DME.
