Woven organic crystals.

ABSTRACT: Woven architectures are prepared by physical entanglement of fibrous components to expand one-dimensional material into two-dimensional sheets with enhanced strength and resilience to wear. Here, we capitalize on the elastic properties of long organic crystals with a high aspect ratio to prepare an array of centimeter-size woven network structures. While being robust to mechanical impact, the woven patches are also elastic due to effective stress dissipation by the elasticity of the individual warp and weft crystals. The thermal stability of component crystals translates into favorable thermoelastic properties of the porous woven structures, where the network remains elastic over a range of 300 K. By providing means for physical entanglement of organic crystals, the weaving circumvents the natural limitation of the small size of slender organic crystals that is determined by their natural growth, thereby expanding the prospects for applications of organic crystals from one-dimensional entities to expandable, two-dimensional robust structures.

Single crystals of purely organic free-standing two-dimensional woven polymer networks.

Project description:The aesthetic and practicality of macroscopic fabrics continue to encourage chemists to weave molecules into interlaced patterns with the aim of providing emergent physical and chemical properties when compared with their starting materials. Weaving purely organic molecular threads into flawless two-dimensional patterns remains a formidable challenge, even though its feasibility has been proposed on several occasions. Herein we describe the synthesis of a flawless, purely organic, free-standing two-dimensional woven polymer network driven by dative B-N bonds. Single crystals of this woven polymer network were obtained and its well-defined woven topology was revealed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Free-standing two-dimensional monolayer nanosheets of the woven polymer network were exfoliated from the layered crystals using Scotch Magic Tape. The surface features of the nanosheets were investigated by integrated low-dose and cryogenic electron microscopy imaging techniques. These findings demonstrate the precise construction of purely organic woven polymer networks and highlight the unique opportunities for the application of woven topologies in two-dimensional organic materials.

Flexible ferroelectric organic crystals.

Project description:Flexible organic materials possessing useful electrical properties, such as ferroelectricity, are of crucial importance in the engineering of electronic devices. Up until now, however, only ferroelectric polymers have intrinsically met this flexibility requirement, leaving small-molecule organic ferroelectrics with room for improvement. Since both flexibility and ferroelectricity are rare properties on their own, combining them in one crystalline organic material is challenging. Herein, we report that trisubstituted haloimidazoles not only display ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity-the properties that originate from their non-centrosymmetric crystal lattice-but also lend their crystalline mechanical properties to fine-tuning in a controllable manner by disrupting the weak halogen bonds between the molecules. This element of control makes it possible to deliver another unique and highly desirable property, namely crystal flexibility. Moreover, the electrical properties are maintained in the flexible crystals.

Martensitic organic crystals as soft actuators.

Project description:Being capable of rapid and complete structure switching, the martensitic phase transitions in molecular crystals are thought to hold a tremendous potential as thermally driven organic actuators. However, the mechanical engineering parlance in the assessment of their performance is not immediately legible to the chemistry research community that starts to explore these materials, and the unavailability of performance indices has precluded molecular crystals from being considered in the device design process. Here, we demonstrate that an organic martensite, hexamethylbenzene, can be used to perform work that is comparable to that of most actuator classes. Millimeter-size single crystals of this material undergo a transition between two forms by uniaxial expansion at a rate of 6.36(2) mm s-1, exerting force in the range 10-100 mN. The force-to-weight ratio of the crystals is on the order of 104 and is superior to that of some living creatures. An actuator performance chart reveals that the performance of this material is close to that of nanomuscles, electrostatic actuators and voice coils, with a strain higher than that of electro/magnetostrictive actuators and ceramic piezoelectrics and stress higher than that of the electroactive polymers, MEMS devices, nanomuscles, voice coils, and some solenoids. Moreover, the crystals of this material are mechanically compliant and can be reversibly bent and shaped to fit the desired application. Altogether, the results point to the untapped potential of molecular crystals as rapid and efficient soft, organic actuators.

Spray printing of organic semiconducting single crystals.

Project description:Single-crystal semiconductors have been at the forefront of scientific interest for more than 70 years, serving as the backbone of electronic devices. Inorganic single crystals are typically grown from a melt using time-consuming and energy-intensive processes. Organic semiconductor single crystals, however, can be grown using solution-based methods at room temperature in air, opening up the possibility of large-scale production of inexpensive electronics targeting applications ranging from field-effect transistors and light-emitting diodes to medical X-ray detectors. Here we demonstrate a low-cost, scalable spray-printing process to fabricate high-quality organic single crystals, based on various semiconducting small molecules on virtually any substrate by combining the advantages of antisolvent crystallization and solution shearing. The crystals' size, shape and orientation are controlled by the sheer force generated by the spray droplets' impact onto the antisolvent's surface. This method demonstrates the feasibility of a spray-on single-crystal organic electronics.

Liquid crystals for organic thin-film transistors.

Project description:Crystalline thin films of organic semiconductors are a good candidate for field effect transistor (FET) materials in printed electronics. However, there are currently two main problems, which are associated with inhomogeneity and poor thermal durability of these films. Here we report that liquid crystalline materials exhibiting a highly ordered liquid crystal phase of smectic E (SmE) can solve both these problems. We design a SmE liquid crystalline material, 2-decyl-7-phenyl-[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (Ph-BTBT-10), for FETs and synthesize it. This material provides uniform and molecularly flat polycrystalline thin films reproducibly when SmE precursor thin films are crystallized, and also exhibits high durability of films up to 200 °C. In addition, the mobility of FETs is dramatically enhanced by about one order of magnitude (over 10 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1)) after thermal annealing at 120 °C in bottom-gate-bottom-contact FETs. We anticipate the use of SmE liquid crystals in solution-processed FETs may help overcome upcoming difficulties with novel technologies for printed electronics.

Core-Shell Crystals of Porous Organic Cages.

Project description:The first examples of core-shell porous molecular crystals are described. The physical properties of the core-shell crystals, such as surface hydrophobicity, CO2 /CH4 selectivity, are controlled by the chemical composition of the shell. This shows that porous core-shell molecular crystals can exhibit synergistic properties that out-perform materials built from the individual, constituent molecules.

Oriented Two-Dimensional Porous Organic Cage Crystals.

Project description:The formation of two-dimensional (2D) oriented porous organic cage crystals (consisting of imine-based tetrahedral molecules) on various substrates (such as silicon wafers and glass) by solution-processing is reported. Insight into the crystallinity, preferred orientation, and cage crystal growth was obtained by experimental and computational techniques. For the first time, structural defects in porous molecular materials were observed directly and the defect concentration could be correlated with crystal growth rate. These oriented crystals suggest potential for future applications, such as solution-processable molecular crystalline 2D membranes for molecular separations.

Organic matter in extraterrestrial water-bearing salt crystals.

Project description:Direct evidence of complex prebiotic chemistry from a water-rich world in the outer solar system is provided by the 4.5-billion-year-old halite crystals hosted in the Zag and Monahans (1998) meteorites. This study offers the first comprehensive organic analysis of the soluble and insoluble organic compounds found in the millimeter-sized halite crystals containing brine inclusions and sheds light on the nature and activity of aqueous fluids on a primitive parent body. Associated with these trapped brines are organic compounds exhibiting wide chemical variations representing organic precursors, intermediates, and reaction products that make up life's precursor molecules such as amino acids. The organic compounds also contain a mixture of C-, O-, and N-bearing macromolecular carbon materials exhibiting a wide range of structural order, as well as aromatic, ketone, imine, and/or imidazole compounds. The enrichment in 15N is comparable to the organic matter in pristine Renazzo-type carbonaceous chondrites, which reflects the sources of interstellar 15N, such as ammonia and amino acids. The amino acid content of the Zag halite deviates from the meteorite matrix, supporting an exogenic origin of the halite, and therefore, the Zag meteorite contains organics synthesized on two distinct parent bodies. Our study suggests that the asteroidal parent body where the halite precipitated, potentially asteroid 1 Ceres, shows evidence for a complex combination of biologically and prebiologically relevant molecules.

Organic radical ferroelectric crystals with martensitic phase transition.

Project description:Organic martensitic compounds are an emerging type of smart material with intriguing physical properties including thermosalient effect, ferroelasticity, and shape memory effect. However, due to the high structural symmetry and limited design theories for these materials, the combination of ferroelectricity and martensitic transformation has rarely been found in organic systems. Here, based on the chemical design strategies for molecular ferroelectrics, we show a series of asymmetric 1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide derivatives with the homochiral amine and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl components, which adopt the low-symmetric polar structure and so allow ferroelectricity. Upon H/F substitution, the fluorinated compounds exhibit reversible ferroelectric and martensitic transitions at 399 K accompanied by a large thermal hysteresis of 132 K. This large thermal hysteresis with two competing (meta)-stable phases is further confirmed by density functional theory calculations. The rare combination of martensitic phase transition and ferroelectricity realizes the bistability with two different ferroelectric phases at room temperature. Our finding provides insight into the exploration of martensitic ferroelectric compounds with potential applications in switchable memory devices, soft robotics, and smart actuators.

Photomechanical Crystals as Light-Activated Organic Soft Microrobots.

Project description:In the field of materials science, dynamic molecular crystals have attracted significant attention as a novel class of energy-transducing materials. However, their development into becoming fully functional actuators remains somewhat limited. This study focuses on one family of dynamic crystalline materials and delves into exploring the efficiency of conversion of light energy to mechanical work. A simple setup is designed to determine a set of performance indices of anthracene-based crystals as an exemplary class of dynamic molecular crystals. The ability of these crystals to reversibly bend due to dimerization is realistically assessed from the perspective of the envisaged soft robotics applications, where wireless photomechanical grippers manipulate and assemble microscopic objects driven and controlled by light instead of lines and motors. The approach described here not only guides the quantification of responsive molecular crystals' actuation potential but also aims to attract an interdisciplinary interest to further develop this class of materials into controllable all-organic actuating elements to be used in microrobotics for engineering or biomedicine.
