A colorimetric detection of Hg²⁺ based on gold nanoparticles synthesized oxidized N-methylpyrrolidone as a reducing agent.

ABSTRACT: In this study, a gold nanoparticles colorimetric probe (AuNPs) with direct response to mercury ions (Hg²⁺) were developed using treated N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and chloroauric acid (HAuCl₄) as precursors. NMP showed good reducibility after high temperature hydrolysis and could be used as reducing and stabilizing agent to synthesize AuNPs. The prepared AuNPs have obvious characteristic absorption peaks and appear wine-red. At the same time, it was found that the presence of Hg²⁺ can cause the aggregation of AuNPs, increased the absorbance at 700 nm, and changed the color of the solution into blue-gray. This method is capable of sensitive and specific determination of Hg²⁺ ranging from 1 to 30 μM, with the limit of detection (LOD) at 0.3 μM. The method showed good specificity for the determination of Hg²⁺ and has the potential to be applied to Hg²⁺ detection in sewage samples in the environment.

Synthesis of Calixarene-Capped Silver Nanoparticles for Colorimetric and Amperometric Detection of Mercury (HgII, Hg0).

Project description:Calixarene-functionalized water dispersible silver nanoparticles have been synthesized and characterized on the basis of UV-vis, IR, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis, and their sensing properties toward metal ions have been investigated. They selectively detect Hg2+ and Hg0 in solution and vapor phases, respectively, with distinct color change. Interference study with mixture of metal ions revealed no interference from any other metal ions used in this study. Their mechanism of detection involved Hg2+-aided displacement of calixarene moiety from the surface of the functionalized nanoparticles, followed by the formation of Ag-Hg amalgam due to interaction of Hg2+ with Ag0 and also the formation of assembly of Ag0 nanoparticles by dipole-dipole interaction of the bare-surfaced nanoparticles. Electrochemical study revealed that with the aid of functionalized nanoparticles, Hg2+ can be detected amperometrically with high sensitivity. The detection limits obtained for Hg2+ by UV-vis study and amperometry are 0.5 nM (0.1 ppb) and 10 nM (2 ppb), respectively. The new material has been used to detect Hg2+ in aqueous real sample and Hg0 in soil sample.

Sensitive Colorimetric Hg2+ Detection via Amalgamation-Mediated Shape Transition of Gold Nanostars.

Project description:Reliable and sensitive methods to monitor mercury levels in real samples are highly important for environment protection and human health. Herein, a label-free colorimetric sensor for Hg2+ quantitation using gold nanostar (GNS) has been demonstrated, based on the formation of Au-Hg amalgamate that leads to shape-evolution of the GNS and changes in its absorbance. Addition of ascorbic acid (AA) to GNS solution is important for quantitation of Hg2+, mainly because it can reduce Hg2+ to Hg to enhance amalgamation on the GNSs and stabilize GNSs. In addition to transmission electron microscopy images, the distribution of circular ratios of GNSs in the presence of 2 mM AA and various concentrations of Hg2+ are used to show the morphology changes of the GNSs. Upon increasing the concentration of Hg2+, the average circular ratio of GNSs decreases, proving GNS is approaching to sphere. The morphology change alters the longitudinal localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) absorbance of the GNSs significantly. Under the optimum conditions, our sensor exhibits a dynamic response for Hg2+ in the range of 1-4,000 nM with a detection limit of 0.24 nM. Upon Increasing Hg2+ concentration, the solution color changes from greenish-blue, purple to red, which can be distinguished by the naked eye when the Hg2+ concentration is higher than 250 nM. Owing to having a high surface-to-volume ratio and affinity toward Hg0, the GNS is sensitive and selective (at least 50-fold over tested metal ions like Pb2+) toward Hg2+ in the presence of AA. Practicality of this assay has been validated by the analysis of water samples without conducting tedious sample pretreatment.

Two novel colorimetric fluorescent probes: Hg2+ and Al3+ in the visual colorimetric recognition environment.

Project description:Two new dual channel Schiff base fluorescent probes, Tri-R6G and Tri-Flu, were synthesized, and can detect Hg2+ and Al3+, respectively. The two probes were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS, and their optical properties were detected by UV and FL. Test results showed the probes' detection of Hg2+ and Al3+ compared to other metal ions (Ag+, Co2+, Cd2+, Mg2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Ba2+, Pb2+, Cr3+, Al3+, Zn2+, Hg2+, K+, Ga2+ and Fe3+), respectively. Besides, the detection limits were determined to be 1.61 × 10-8 M and 1.15 × 10-8 M through the standard curve plot, respectively. The photoelectron transfer (PET) mechanism was guessed by the Job's plot and the infrared titration. Corresponding orbital electron distribution and molecular geometry configurations of the compounds were predicted by density functional theory (DFT). In addition, the prepared test paper changed from white to pink when the target ion was detected. The color changed from colorless to pink in a solution having a concentration of 10-5 M.

Highly Sensitive Colorimetric Assay for Determining Fe3+ Based on Gold Nanoparticles Conjugated with Glycol Chitosan.

Project description:A highly sensitive and simple colorimetric assay for the detection of Fe3+ ions was developed using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) conjugated with glycol chitosan (GC). The Fe3+ ion coordinates with the oxygen atoms of GC in a hexadentate manner (O-Fe3+-O), decreasing the interparticle distance and inducing aggregation. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry showed that the bound Fe3+ was coordinated to the oxygen atoms of the ethylene glycol in GC, which resulted in a significant color change from light red to dark midnight blue due to aggregation. Using this GC-AuNP probe, the quantitative determination of Fe3+ in biological, environmental, and pharmaceutical samples could be achieved by the naked eye and spectrophotometric methods. Sensitive response and pronounced color change of the GC-AuNPs in the presence of Fe3+ were optimized at pH 6, 70°C, and 300 mM NaCl concentration. The absorption intensity ratio (A700/A510) linearly correlated to the Fe3+ concentration in the linear range of 0-180 μM. The limits of detection were 11.3, 29.2, and 46.0 nM for tap water, pond water, and iron supplement tablets, respectively. Owing to its facile and sensitive nature, this assay method for Fe3+ ions can be applied to the analysis of drinking water and pharmaceutical samples.

Resorcinol Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles for Formaldehyde Colorimetric Detection.

Project description:Gold nanoparticles functionalized with resorcinol moieties have been prepared and used for detecting formaldehyde both in solution and gas phases. The detection mechanism is based on the color change of the probe upon the aggregation of the nanoparticles induced by the polymerization of the resorcinol moieties in the presence of formaldehyde. A limit of detection of 0.5 ppm in solution has been determined. The probe can be deployed for the detection of formaldehyde emissions from composite wood boards.

Colorimetric Immunosensor by Aggregation of Photochemically Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles.

Project description:A colorimetric immunosensor based on local surface plasmon resonance by gold nanoparticles is presented, and its application for the detection of human immunoglobulin G (IgG) is demonstrated. The color change of the colloidal solution is produced by nanoparticle aggregation, a process that can be tuned by the presence of the analyte once the nanoparticles are functionalized. In comparison to common functionalization techniques, the procedure described here is simpler, low-cost, and effective in binding antibodies upright on the gold surface. The dose-response curve is similar to that resulting in typical immunoassay platforms and is satisfactorily described by the proposed theoretical model. Human IgG at concentration levels of few hundreds of nanograms per milliliter can be detected by eyes within a few minutes, thereby making the colorimetric immunosensor proposed here a powerful tool in several areas, with urine test in medical diagnostics being the most immediate.

Dual Colorimetric Sensor for Hg2+/Pb2+ and an Efficient Catalyst Based on Silver Nanoparticles Mediating by the Root Extract of Bistorta amplexicaulis.

Project description:Environmental pollution derivated from toxic metals and organic toxins is becoming a serious issue worldwide because of their harmful effects on the ecosystem and human health. Here we are reporting an extremely selective and cost-effective colorimetric sensor for simultaneous recognition of Hg2+ and Pb2+ by using green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) mediated from the environmental friendly roots extract of Bistorta amplexicaulis. Biogenic synthesized AgNPs were well-characterized by various spectroscopic techniques e.g., UV-vis, FT-IR, XRD, AFM, and Zetasizer. The photophysical potential of synthesized AgNPs toward common metal cations was explored via absorption spectroscopy and colorimetric assay. The hypsochromic shift in the SPR band of AgNPs can easily be detected through naked eyes vision from dark brown to light yellow in the case of Hg2+. A substantial reduction in the absorbance of AgNPs was recorded upon mixing with Pb2+. AgNPs based colorimetric sensor is highly sensitive toward Hg2+ and Pb2+ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.0 × 10-7 M and 2.0 × 10-7 M for Hg2+ and Pb2+, respectively. Furthermore, AgNPs showed promising catalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange dye. These results demonstrate that Bistorta amplexicaulis stabilized silver nanoparticles have potential applications as a colorimetric sensor and an effective catalyst for the degradation of methyl orange.

Cancer-selective, single agent chemoradiosensitising gold nanoparticles.

Project description:Two nanometre gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), bearing sugar moieties and/or thiol-polyethylene glycol-amine (PEG-amine), were synthesised and evaluated for their in vitro toxicity and ability to radiosensitise cells with 220 kV and 6 MV X-rays, using four cell lines representing normal and cancerous skin and breast tissues. Acute 3 h exposure of cells to AuNPs, bearing PEG-amine only or a 50:50 ratio of alpha-galactose derivative and PEG-amine resulted in selective uptake and toxicity towards cancer cells at unprecedentedly low nanomolar concentrations. Chemotoxicity was prevented by co-administration of N-acetyl cysteine antioxidant, or partially prevented by the caspase inhibitor Z-VAD-FMK. In addition to their intrinsic cancer-selective chemotoxicity, these AuNPs acted as radiosensitisers in combination with 220 kV or 6 MV X-rays. The ability of AuNPs bearing simple ligands to act as cancer-selective chemoradiosensitisers at low concentrations is a novel discovery that holds great promise in developing low-cost cancer nanotherapeutics.

Colorimetric sensing of cephradine through polypropylene glycol functionalized gold nanoparticles.

Project description:The development of metal nanoparticle-based facile colorimetric assays for drugs and insecticides is an emerging area of current scientific research. In the present work, polypropylene glycol was used for stabilization of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in a simple one-pot two-phase process and subsequently employed it for the specific detection of cephradine (CPH). The characterization of the prepared PPG-AuNPs was conducted through various analytical techniques such as UV-visible spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), zeta potential and zetasizer techniques. As the major target of the study, the stabilized PPG-AuNPs were employed for colorimetric detection of CPH and other drugs. Typical wine-red colour of PPG-AuNPs disappeared immediately and surface plasmon resonance band quenched by addition of CPH in the presence of several other interferents (drugs and salts) and in real samples. PPG-AuNPs permitted efficient, selective, reliable and rapid determination in a concentration range of 0.01-120 mM with a detection limit (LoD) of 11.0 mM. The developed sensor has the potential to be used for fast scanning of pharmaceutical formulations for quantification of CPH at production facilities.

Gold nanoparticles-anchored peptides enable precise colorimetric estimation of microplastics.

Project description:Microplastics (MPs, particle size < 5 mm) are an emerging contaminant in aquatic environment, which have attracted increasing attention worldwide. In this study, a colorimetric method for MPs detection was developed based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-anchored peptides (LCI or TA2), which are able to specifically recognize and adhere to polypropylene (PP) or polystyrene (PS). The AuNPs-anchored peptides accumulated on the surface of MPs, rendering a color change from red to gray-blue and transforming the surface plasmon absorption intensity and wavelength. The designed method presented high selectivity, stability, and reproducibility, with a detection range of 2.5-15 μg/mL. The results demonstrated that the developed approach will be valuable in the precise, facile, and cost-effective estimation of MPs in different matrices, regulating the control over MPs pollution and its hazardous impact on health and ecosystems.
