MoOx-Based Colorimetric Sensor for Ultraviolet Visualization.

ABSTRACT: Due to the depletion of the global ozone layer and the presence of ozone holes, humans are increasingly exposed to threats from solar ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, researching and developing a highly selective, sensitive, simple, and fast ultraviolet sensor is of significant importance for personal protection. In recent years, new nanomaterials have shown good application prospects in the research of ultraviolet sensors. MoOx nanostructures were prepared by a hydrothermal method. The experimental results show that, compared to traditional photochromic compounds, the new MoOx nanostructures exhibit high uniqueness, high selectivity, and excellent stability, and can perform rapid and accurate detection under full-band light. The beam sensor can not only detect through traditional electrical signal output, but also amplify, display, and analyze the beam through visualization and visual analysis, further improving the reliability and practicality of its application.

Photo-Rheological Fluid-Based Colorimetric Ultraviolet Light Intensity Sensor.

Project description:This study presents an introduction to a new type of ultraviolet (UV) light intensity sensor using photo-rheological (PR) fluids whose properties, such as color, can be changed by UV light. When the PR fluids were irradiated by UV light, colorimetric transitions were observed. Effectively, this means that their color changed gradually from yellow to red. The degree of the color change depended on the UV light intensity and was characterized by the hue value of the images acquired with a compact image sensor. We demonstrated that UV light-responsive capabilities can be readily imparted to PR fluids, and that the colorimetric responses to different UV light intensities can be used to measure the UV light intensities.

A Colorimetric Membrane-Based Sensor with Improved Selectivity towards Amphetamine.

Project description:Due to their simplicity, speed and low cost, chemical spot tests are increasingly demanded for the presumptive identification of illicit drugs in a variety of contexts such as point-of-care assistance or prosecution of drug trafficking. However, most of the colorimetric reactions used in these tests are, at best, drug class selective. Therefore, the development of tests based on chemical reactions with improved discrimination power is of great interest. In this work, we propose a new colorimetric assay for amphetamine (AMP) based on its reaction with solutions of alkaline gold bromide to form an insoluble yellow-orange derivative. The resulting suspensions are then filtered onto nylon membranes and the precipitate collected is used for the visual identification of AMP. The measurement of the absorbance of the membranes by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy also allows the quantification of AMP in a simple and rapid way, as demonstrated for different synthetic and drug street samples. On the basis of the results obtained, it was concluded that the proposed procedure is highly selective towards AMP, as this compound could be easily differentiated from other common drugs such as methamphetamine (MET), ephedrine (EPH), scopolamine (SCP) and cocaine (COC).

Discrimination of Chinese Baijiu grades based on colorimetric sensor arrays.

Project description:In this study, a novel colorimetric sensor array based on chemo dyes including porphyrins and pH indicators were developed to analyse the volatile organic compounds of Chinese Baijiu with different grades. Ethyl acetate, ethyl butyrate and ethyl caproate appeared by significantly different concentration in different Baijiu grades measuring by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry and they were chosen as characteristic volatile organic components. The olfactory visualization system based on colorimetric sensor arrays was used to identify different Baijiu grades. The data were processed by building the principle components analysis, linear discriminant analysis and K-nearest neighbor classification models with the results of sensory evaluation and olfactory visualization system. This work presents a new-style colorimetric sensor using sensitive chemo dyes which has significant potential in quantitative analysis of volatile organic compounds, afterwards identifying different grades of Baijiu.

GaN-Based Ultraviolet Passive Pixel Sensor on Silicon (111) Substrate.

Project description:The fabrication of a single pixel sensor, which is a fundamental element device for the fabrication of an array-type pixel sensor, requires an integration technique of a photodetector and transistor on a wafer. In conventional GaN-based ultraviolet (UV) imaging devices, a hybrid-type integration process is typically utilized, which involves a backside substrate etching and a wafer-to-wafer bonding process. In this work, we developed a GaN-based UV passive pixel sensor (PPS) by integrating a GaN metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) UV photodetector and a Schottky-barrier (SB) metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) on an epitaxially grown GaN layer on silicon substrate. An MSM-type UV sensor had a low dark current density of 3.3 × 10-7 A/cm² and a high UV/visible rejection ratio of 10³. The GaN SB-MOSFET showed a normally-off operation and exhibited a maximum drain current of 0.5 mA/mm and a maximum transconductance of 30 ?S/mm with a threshold voltage of 4.5 V. The UV PPS showed good UV response and a high dark-to-photo contrast ratio of 10³ under irradiation of 365-nm UV. This integration technique will provide one possible way for a monolithic integration of the GaN-based optoelectronic devices.

Colorimetric Sensor Based on Hydroxypropyl Cellulose for Wide Temperature Sensing Range.

Project description:Recently, temperature monitoring with practical colorimetric sensors has been highlighted because they can directly visualize the temperature of surfaces without any power sources or electrical transducing systems. Accordingly, several colorimetric sensors that convert the temperature change into visible color alteration through various physical and chemical mechanisms have been proposed. However, the colorimetric temperature sensors that can be used at subzero temperatures and detect a wide range of temperatures have not been sufficiently explored. Here, we present a colorimetric sensory system that can detect and visualize a wide range of temperatures, even at a temperature below 0 °C. This system was developed with easily affordable materials via a simple fabrication method. The sensory system is mainly fabricated using hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) and ethylene glycol as the coolant. In this system, HPC can self-assemble into a temperature-responsive cholesteric liquid crystalline mesophase, and ethylene glycol can prevent the mesophase from freezing at low temperatures. The colorimetric sensory system can quantitatively visualize the temperature and show repeatability in the temperature change from -20 to 25 °C. This simple and reliable sensory system has great potential as a temperature-monitoring system for structures exposed to real environments.

Colorimetric Paper Sensor for Food Spoilage Based on Biogenic Amine Monitoring.

Project description:Biogenic amines (BAs), nitrogenous molecules usually present in different foods, can be considered an indicator of freshness and food quality since their amount increases during food spoilage. Their detection, possibly in real time via the use of smart packaging, is therefore of crucial importance to ensure food safety and to fulfill consumers' demand. To this end, colorimetric sensors are considered one of the most feasible solutions. Here, we report a user-friendly colorimetric sensing paper able to detect BAs via the naked eye. The sensing molecule is the aglycone genipin, a natural cross-linking agent extracted from gardenia fruit, able to bind BAs producing water-soluble blue pigments. The paper sensor was applied to chicken meat quality monitoring and a quantitative analysis was performed with image acquisition via a smartphone camera, achieving a limit of detection equivalent to 0.1 mM of putrescine. The suitability of the BA sensing paper was assessed by integrating the sensor into smart packaging and analyzing commercial chicken meat samples stored at different temperatures; the results of the sensor paralleled the "best before date" indicated on the label, confirming the potential applicability of the sensor as a smart label.

Efficient Colorimetric Fluoride Anion Sensor Based on π-Conjugated Carbazole Small Molecule.

Project description:The ability to detect fluoride anions with high selectivity and sensitivity by using the naked eye is crucial yet challenging. In this study, a novel, simple conjugated organic dye, N-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-3,6-diiodocarbazole (CA-TBMDS) was developed and used for the first time as a colorimetric sensor for fluoride. CA-TBMDS was found to be a highly sensitive fluoride chemosensor, with a detection limit as low as 3 × 10-5 M. The reaction of CA-TBMDS with fluoride anions in a tetrahydrofuran solution resulted in a color change from colorless to yellow under ambient light, which can be discriminated by the naked eye. The sensor operated via intermolecular proton transfer between the amide units and the fluoride anion, as confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance titration. CA-TBMDS is not only highly sensitive to fluoride anions, but also exhibits high sensitivity in the presence of various ions. This work demonstrates that N-butyldimethylchlorosilane-based organic dyes have prospective utility as a type of fluoride anion chemosensor.

High-performance colorimetric sensor based on PtRu bimetallic nanozyme for xanthine analysis.

Project description:The identification and quantification of xanthine are crucial for assessing the freshness and quality of food products, particularly in the seafood industry. Herein, a new approach was developed, involving the in-situ controllable growth of Pt91Ru9 nanoparticles on graphitic carbon nitride to yield Pt91Ru9@C3N4 catalytic materials. By integrating Pt91Ru9@C3N4 with the xanthine/xanthine oxidase (XOD) enzyme catalytic system, a nanozyme-enzyme tandem platform was obtained for the quantification analysis of xanthine. Under the catalytic oxidation of xanthine by XOD in the presence O2, H2O2 was generated. Upon the addition of peroxidase-like activity of Pt91Ru9@C3N4, H2O2 can be decomposed into •OH and 1O2, which can further catalyze the oxidation of TMB to its oxidation product oxTMB with an absorption peak at 652 nm. This smartphone-assisted portable colorimetric sensor for visual monitoring xanthine with a low detection limit of 8.92 nmol L-1, and successfully applied to detect xanthine in grass carp and serum samples.

Photoacoustic and Colorimetric Visualization of Latent Fingerprints.

Project description:There is a high demand on a simple, rapid, accurate, user-friendly, cost-effective, and nondestructive universal method for latent fingerprint (LFP) detection. Herein, we describe a combination imaging strategy for LFP visualization with high resolution using poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride)-b-polystyrene (PSMA-b-PS) functionalized gold nanoparticles (GNPs). This general approach integrates the merits of both colorimetric imaging and photoacoustic imaging. In comparison with the previous methods, our strategy is single-step and does not require the signal amplification by silver staining. The PSMA-b-PS functionalized GNPs have good stability, tunable color, and high affinity for universal secretions (proteins/polypeptides/amino acids), which makes our approach general and flexible for visualizing LFPs on different substrates (presumably with different colors) and from different people. Moreover, the unique optical property of GNPs enables the photoacoustic imaging of GNPs-deposited LFPs with high resolution. This allows observation of level 3 hyperfine features of LFPs such as the pores and ridge contours by photoacoustic imaging. This technique can potentially be used to identify chemicals within LFP residues. We believe that this dual-modality imaging of LFPs will find widespread use in forensic investigations and medical diagnostics.
