Discrimination of Chinese Baijiu grades based on colorimetric sensor arrays.

ABSTRACT: In this study, a novel colorimetric sensor array based on chemo dyes including porphyrins and pH indicators were developed to analyse the volatile organic compounds of Chinese Baijiu with different grades. Ethyl acetate, ethyl butyrate and ethyl caproate appeared by significantly different concentration in different Baijiu grades measuring by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry and they were chosen as characteristic volatile organic components. The olfactory visualization system based on colorimetric sensor arrays was used to identify different Baijiu grades. The data were processed by building the principle components analysis, linear discriminant analysis and K-nearest neighbor classification models with the results of sensory evaluation and olfactory visualization system. This work presents a new-style colorimetric sensor using sensitive chemo dyes which has significant potential in quantitative analysis of volatile organic compounds, afterwards identifying different grades of Baijiu.

Gold Nanorod-Based Chrono-Colorimetric Sensor Arrays: A Promising Platform for Chemical Discrimination Applications.

Project description:Most array-based sensing platforms, to date, utilize static response patterns for discrimination of a wide variety of analytes, but only a few studies have focused on the important task of quantitatively resolving structural isomers, which are nowadays important because of their broad usage in medicines and industries. A possible way of accomplishing this feat is to combine kinetic (rather than static) sensor response profiles with the chemical tongue strategy to allow the development of array-based sensors for isomeric discrimination. Here, by adding the time dimension, a simple and novel gold nanorod (AuNR)-based chrono-colorimetric sensor array is proposed for chemical discrimination applications. Because of their similar structure but different redox potentials, dihydroxybenzene (DHB) structural isomers have been chosen, as models, to evaluate the applicability of the proposed array. The principle of the array relies on various growth rates of silver shells on AuNRs at different silver ion/AuNR concentration ratios owing to the different kinetic behaviors of DHBs, which can be used as fingerprints to identify DHBs with the help of multivariate analysis methods. The combinatorial colorimetric response of AuNRs upon DHB addition has been analyzed by linear discriminant analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis. Finally, identification of individual DHBs or their mixtures in real samples confirms the potential application of the proposed array.

Colorimetric protein sensing using catalytically amplified sensor arrays.

Interactions between cationic monolayers on the Fe(3) O(4) NPs and analyte proteins differentially modulates the peroxidase-like activity of Fe(3) O(4) NPs, affording catalytically amplified colorimetric signal patterns that enable the detection and identification of proteins at 50 nM.

The use of colorimetric sensor arrays to discriminate between pathogenic bacteria.

Project description:A colorimetric sensor array is a high-dimensional chemical sensor that is cheap, compact, disposable, robust, and easy to operate, making it a good candidate technology to detect pathogenic bacteria, especially potential bioterrorism agents like Yersinia pestis and Bacillus anthracis which feature on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's list of potential biothreats. Here, a colorimetric sensor array was used to continuously monitor the volatile metabolites released by bacteria in solid media culture in an Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogen Containment Level 3 laboratory. At inoculum concentrations as low as 8 colony-forming units per plate, 4 different bacterial species were identified with 100% accuracy using logistic regression to classify the kinetic profile of sensor responses to culture headspace gas. The sensor array was able to further discriminate between different strains of the same species, including 5 strains of Yersinia pestis and Bacillus anthracis. These preliminary results suggest that disposable colorimetric sensor arrays can be an effective, low-cost tool to identify pathogenic bacteria.

Discrimination of complex mixtures by a colorimetric sensor array: coffee aromas.

Project description:The analysis of complex mixtures presents a difficult challenge even for modern analytical techniques, and the ability to discriminate among closely similar such mixtures often remains problematic. Coffee provides a readily available archetype of such highly multicomponent systems. The use of a low-cost, sensitive colorimetric sensor array for the detection and identification of coffee aromas is reported. The color changes of the sensor array were used as a digital representation of the array response and analyzed with standard statistical methods, including principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA). PCA revealed that the sensor array has exceptionally high dimensionality with 18 dimensions required to define 90% of the total variance. In quintuplicate runs of 10 commercial coffees and controls, no confusions or errors in classification by HCA were observed in 55 trials. In addition, the effects of temperature and time in the roasting of green coffee beans were readily observed and distinguishable with a resolution better than 10 degrees C and 5 min, respectively. Colorimetric sensor arrays demonstrate excellent potential for complex systems analysis in real-world applications and provide a novel method for discrimination among closely similar complex mixtures.

Chemically responsive nanoporous pigments: colorimetric sensor arrays and the identification of aliphatic amines.

Project description:A general method has been developed for the preparation of microspheres of nanoporous pigments, their formulation into chemically responsive pigment inks, and the printing of these inks as colorimetric sensor arrays. Using an ultrasonic-spray aerosol-gel synthesis from chemically responsive dyes and common silica precursors, 16 different nanoporous pigment microspheres have been prepared and characterized. New colorimetric sensor arrays have been created by printing inks of these chemically responsive pigments as primary sensor elements; these arrays have been successfully tested for the detection, identification, and quantitation of toxic aliphatic amines. Among 11 structurally similar amines, complete identification of each analyte without confusion was achieved using hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). Furthermore, visual identification of ammonia gas was easily made at the IDLH (immediately dangerous to life or health), PEL (permissible exposure limits), and 0.1 PEL concentrations with high reproducibility.

Visualising household air pollution: Colorimetric sensor arrays for monitoring volatile organic compounds indoors.

Project description:Indoor air quality monitoring as it relates to the domestic setting is an integral part of human exposure monitoring and health risk assessment. Hence there is a great need for easy to use, fast and economical indoor air quality sensors to monitor the volatile organic compound composition of the air which is known to be significantly perturbed by the various source emissions from activities in the home. To meet this need, paper-based colorimetric sensor arrays were deployed as volatile organic compound detectors in a field study aiming to understand which activities elicit responses from these sensor arrays in household settings. The sensor array itself is composed of pH indicators and aniline dyes that enable molecular recognition of carboxylic acids, amines and carbonyl-containing compounds. The sensor arrays were initially deployed in different rooms in a single household having different occupant activity types and levels. Sensor responses were shown to differ for different room settings on the basis of occupancy levels and the nature of the room emission sources. Sensor responses relating to specific activities such as cooking, cleaning, office work, etc were noted in the temporal response. Subsequently, the colorimetric sensor arrays were deployed in a broader study across 9 different households and, using multivariate analysis, the sensor responses were shown to correlate strongly with household occupant activity and year of house build. Overall, this study demonstrates the significant potential for this type of simple approach to indoor air pollution monitoring in residential environments.

Quartz Crystal Microbalance Based Sensor Arrays for Detection and Discrimination of VOCs Using Phosphonium Ionic Liquid Composites.

Project description:Herein, we examine two sensing schemes for detection and discrimination of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this work, phosphonium ionic liquids (ILs) were synthesized and vapor sensing properties examined and compared to phosphonium IL-polymer composites. Pure IL sensors were used to develop a QCM-based multisensory array (MSA), while IL-polymer composites were used to develop an MSA and virtual sensor arrays (VSAs). It was found that by employing the composite MSA, five chlorinated VOCs were accurately discriminated at 95.56%, which was an increase in accuracy as compared to pure ILs MSA (84.45%). Data acquired with two out of three VSAs allowed discrimination of chlorinated VOCs with 100% accuracy. These studies have provided greater insight into the benefits of incorporating polymers in coating materials for enhanced discrimination accuracies of QCM-based sensor arrays. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a QCM-based VSA for discrimination of closely related chlorinated VOCs.

Photo-Rheological Fluid-Based Colorimetric Ultraviolet Light Intensity Sensor.

Project description:This study presents an introduction to a new type of ultraviolet (UV) light intensity sensor using photo-rheological (PR) fluids whose properties, such as color, can be changed by UV light. When the PR fluids were irradiated by UV light, colorimetric transitions were observed. Effectively, this means that their color changed gradually from yellow to red. The degree of the color change depended on the UV light intensity and was characterized by the hue value of the images acquired with a compact image sensor. We demonstrated that UV light-responsive capabilities can be readily imparted to PR fluids, and that the colorimetric responses to different UV light intensities can be used to measure the UV light intensities.

An Improved Comparison of Chemometric Analyses for the Identification of Acids and Bases With Colorimetric Sensor Arrays.

Project description:Colorimetric sensor arrays incorporating red, green, and blue (RGB) image analysis use value changes from multiple sensors for the identification and quantification of various analytes. RGB data can be easily obtained using image analysis software such as ImageJ. Subsequent chemometric analysis is becoming a key component of colorimetric array RGB data analysis, though literature contains mainly principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). Seeking to expand the chemometric methods toolkit for array analysis, we explored the performance of nine chemometric methods were compared for the task of classifying 631 solutions (0.1 to 3 M) of acetic acid, malonic acid, lysine, and ammonia using an eight sensor colorimetric array. PCA and LDA (linear discriminant analysis) were effective for visualizing the dataset. For classification, linear discriminant analysis (LDA), (k nearest neighbors) KNN, (soft independent modelling by class analogy) SIMCA, recursive partitioning and regression trees (RPART), and hit quality index (HQI) were very effective with each method classifying compounds with over 90% correct assignments. Support vector machines (SVM) and partial least squares - discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) struggled with ~85 and 39% correct assignments, respectively. Additional mathematical treatments of the data set, such as incrementally increasing the exponents, did not improve the performance of LDA and KNN. The literature precedence indicates that the most common methods for analyzing colorimetric arrays are PCA, LDA, HCA, and KNN. To our knowledge, this is the first report of comparing and contrasting several more diverse chemometric methods to analyze the same colorimetric array data.
