Synthesis of a potassium capped terminal cobalt-oxido complex.

ABSTRACT: An unusual example of a potassium capped terminal cobalt-oxido complex has been isolated and crystallographically characterized. The synthesis of [^tBu,TolDHP]CoOK proceeds from a previously reported parent compound, [^tBu,TolDHP]CoOH, via deprotonation with KO^tBu. Structural and electronic characterization suggest a weakly coupled dimer in a distinct seesaw geometry with a Co(III) oxidation state and a non-innocent radical ligand.

Project description:In the title compound, [Co(C(10)H(8)N(2))(3)][Mo(6)O(19)], the Co(2+) cation is surrounded in a distorted octa-hedral coordination by six N atoms from three 2,2'-bipyridine ligands. The distribution of Mo-O bond lengths in the Lindqvist isopolyanion is consistent with other structures containing the same unit. In the crystal, the cations and anions are linked by C-H⋯O inter-actions.

Synthesis and characterization of Magnesium-Iron-Cobalt complex hydrides.

Project description:The formation, structure and deuterium desorption properties of Mg2FexCo(1-x)Dy (0 ≤ x ≤ 1 and 5 ≤ y ≤ 6) complex hydrides were investigated. The synthesis was carried out by reactive ball milling, using a mixture of powders of the parent elements in D2 atmosphere. The formation of quaternary deuterides was identified from Rietveld refinements of powder X-Ray diffraction and powder neutron diffraction patterns, and from infrared attenuated total reflectance analysis. It was observed that the crystal structure of deuterides depends on the transition metal fraction. For Co-rich compositions, i.e. up to x = 0.1, hydrides have the tetragonal distorted CaF2-type structure (space group P4/nmm) of Mg2CoD5 at room temperature. For Fe-rich compositions, i.e. x ≥ 0.5, a cubic hydride is observed, with the same K2PtCl6-type structure (space group Fm[Formula: see text]m) as Mg2FeD6 and as Mg2CoD5 at high temperatures. For x = 0.3, both the cubic and the tetragonal deuterides are detected. Differential scanning calorimetry coupled with thermogravimetric and temperature programmed desorption analyses show rather similar deuterium desorption properties for all samples, without significant changes as a function of composition. Finally, hydrogen sorption experiments performed for Mg2Fe0.5Co0.5H5.5 at 30 bar of H2 and 673 K showed reversible reactions, with good kinetic for both absorption and desorption of hydrogen.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Co(2)(C(2)O(4))(C(10)H(8)N(2))(4)][W(6)O(19)], consists of one half of the complex [Co(2)(C(2)O(4))(C(10)H(8)N(2))(4)](2+) cation and one half of the Lindqvist-type [W(6)O(19)](2-) isopolyanion. Both constituents are completed by crystallographic inversion symmetry. In the dimeric cation, the Co(II) atom is surrounded in a distorted octa-hedral coordination by four N atoms from two chelating 2,2'-bipyridine ligands and by two O atoms from the chelating oxalate anion. The Lindqvist-type anion exhibits the characteristic W-O bond-length distribution, with the shortest bonds being the W-O(terminal) bonds and the longest being those to the central O atom.

Controlled assembly of graphene-capped nickel, cobalt and iron silicides.

Project description:The unique properties of graphene have raised high expectations regarding its application in carbon-based nanoscale devices that could complement or replace traditional silicon technology. This gave rise to the vast amount of researches on how to fabricate high-quality graphene and graphene nanocomposites that is currently going on. Here we show that graphene can be successfully integrated with the established metal-silicide technology. Starting from thin monocrystalline films of nickel, cobalt and iron, we were able to form metal silicides of high quality with a variety of stoichiometries under a Chemical Vapor Deposition grown graphene layer. These graphene-capped silicides are reliably protected against oxidation and can cover a wide range of electronic materials/device applications. Most importantly, the coupling between the graphene layer and the silicides is rather weak and the properties of quasi-freestanding graphene are widely preserved.

Manganese-Cobalt Oxido Cubanes Relevant to Manganese-Doped Water Oxidation Catalysts.

Project description:Incorporation of Mn into an established water oxidation catalyst based on a Co(III)4O4 cubane was achieved by a simple and efficient assembly of permanganate, cobalt(II) acetate, and pyridine to form the cubane oxo cluster MnCo3O4(OAc)5py3 (OAc = acetate, py = pyridine) (1-OAc) in good yield. This allows characterization of electronic and chemical properties for a manganese center in a cobalt oxide environment, and provides a molecular model for Mn-doped cobalt oxides. The electronic properties of the cubane are readily tuned by exchange of the OAc- ligand for Cl- (1-Cl), NO3- (1-NO3), and pyridine ([1-py]+). EPR spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and DFT calculations thoroughly characterized the valence assignment of the cubane as [MnIVCoIII3]. These cubanes are redox-active, and calculations reveal that the Co ions behave as the reservoir for electrons, but their redox potentials are tuned by the choice of ligand at Mn. This MnCo3O4 cubane system represents a new class of easily prepared, versatile, and redox-active oxido clusters that should contribute to an understanding of mixed-metal, Mn-containing oxides.

Project description:The crystal structure of the title compound, [Co(3)(C(5)H(9)O(2))(6)O(CH(4)O)(3)]Cl, consists of trinuclear Co(III) complex cations and chloride anions. The Co(III) cation has site symmetry m, and is coordinated by four oxygen atoms from four bridging pivalate groups, one central O anion and a methanol oxygen atom, forming a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The coordinated methanol mol-ecule is located on a crystallographic special position, the C and O atoms being located on the mirror plane. The central O anion lies in the crystallographic position, and acts as a ?(3)-O bridge, linking three equivalent Co(III) cations and generating the oxo-centered trinuclear Co(III) complex. The chloride anion, which acts as the counter-ion, is located on crystallographic position. O-H?Cl hydrogen bonding between the Cl anion and hydroxyl group of the coordinated methanol mol-ecule links the mol-ecules into a supra-molecular network.

The Co(III) ion lies on an inversion center, and the asymmetric unit contains one half of a [Co(III)(2α,2β-TpivPP)(CN)2](-) ion complex and one half of a [K(18-C-6](+) counter-ion (18-C-6 is 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexa-oxa-cyclo-octa-deca-ne), where the K(I) ion lies on an inversion center. The Co(III) ion is hexa-coordinated by two C-bonded axial cyanide ligands and the four pyrrole N atoms of the porphyrin ligand. The K(I) ion is chelated by the six O atoms of the 18-crown-6 mol-ecule and is further coordinated by two O atoms of pivalamido groups of the porphyrin ligands, leading to the formation of polymeric chains running along [011]. In the crystal, the polymeric chains and the lattice water mol-ecules are linked by N-H⋯O and O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds, as well as weak C-H⋯O, O-H⋯π and C-H⋯π inter-actions into a three-dimensional supra-molecular architecture.

Addition of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds to terminal alkynes catalyzed by a cationic cobalt(iii) complex.

Project description:The Nakamura reaction using a cationic cobalt(iii) complex, [Cp*Co(CH3CN)3][SbF6]2 as the catalyst under neutral and aerobic conditions at 110 °C has been described. In solution, the complex is expected to lose a hemilabile acetonitrile ligand to produce a highly electron-deficient cobalt(iii) center, and the Lewis acidic nature of the cobalt center has been exploited for the enolization of the dicarbonyl compounds. The reaction of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds with alkynes affords the corresponding alkenyl derivative. However, the reaction of phenylacetylene and its derivatives with β-ketoesters affords corresponding terphenyl compounds. Details of the mechanisms of the reactions have been proposed based on in situ LCMS measurements.

Synthesis and reactivity of a mononuclear non-haem cobalt(IV)-oxo complex.

Project description:Terminal cobalt(IV)-oxo (CoIV-O) species have been implicated as key intermediates in various cobalt-mediated oxidation reactions. Herein we report the photocatalytic generation of a mononuclear non-haem [(13-TMC)CoIV(O)]2+ (2) by irradiating [CoII(13-TMC)(CF3SO3)]+ (1) in the presence of [RuII(bpy)3]2+, Na2S2O8, and water as an oxygen source. The intermediate 2 was also obtained by reacting 1 with an artificial oxidant (that is, iodosylbenzene) and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. In particular, the resonance Raman spectrum of 2 reveals a diatomic Co-O vibration band at 770 cm-1, which provides the conclusive evidence for the presence of a terminal Co-O bond. In reactivity studies, 2 was shown to be a competent oxidant in an intermetal oxygen atom transfer, C-H bond activation and olefin epoxidation reactions. The present results lend strong credence to the intermediacy of CoIV-O species in cobalt-catalysed oxidation of organic substrates as well as in the catalytic oxidation of water that evolves molecular oxygen.

Synthesis of 5'-Thiamine-Capped RNA.

Project description:RNA 5'-modifications are known to extend the functional spectrum of ribonucleotides. In recent years, numerous non-canonical 5'-modifications, including adenosine-containing cofactors from the group of B vitamins, have been confirmed in all kingdoms of life. The structural component of thiamine adenosine triphosphate (thiamine-ATP), a vitamin B1 derivative found to accumulate in Escherichia coli and other organisms in response to metabolic stress conditions, suggests an analogous function as a 5'-modification of RNA. Here, we report the synthesis of thiamine adenosine dinucleotides and the preparation of pure 5'-thiamine-capped RNAs based on phosphorimidazolide chemistry. Furthermore, we present the incorporation of thiamine-ATP and thiamine adenosine diphosphate (thiamine-ADP) as 5'-caps of RNA by T7 RNA polymerase. Transcripts containing the thiamine modification were modified specifically with biotin via a combination of thiazole ring opening, nucleophilic substitution and copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition. The highlighted methods provide easy access to 5'-thiamine RNA, which may be applied in the development of thiamine-specific RNA capture protocols as well as the discovery and confirmation of 5'-thiamine-capped RNAs in various organisms.
