Two types of aspartyl-tRNA synthetase exist: the discriminating enzyme (D-AspRS) forms only Asp-tRNA(Asp), while the nondiscriminating one (ND-AspRS) also synthesizes Asp-tRNA(Asn), a required intermediate in protein synthesis in many organisms (but not in Escherichia coli).
