ABSTRACT: The largest CPL activity ever measured was observed for cesium tetrakis(3-heptafluoro-butylryl-(+)-camphorato) Eu(III) complexes in EtOH and CHCl3 solutions substantiating the stereospecific formation of chiral Delta-SAPR-(C4) configuration with the aid of Cs+...FC (fluorocarbon) interactions more clearly than the exciton CD spectra.

Project description:The synthesis, characterization, and luminescent behavior of trivalent Sm, Eu, Dy, and Tb complexes of two enantiomeric, octadentate, chiral, 2-hydroxyisophthalamide ligands are reported. These complexes are highly luminescent in solution. Functionalization of the achiral parent ligand with a chiral 1-phenylethylamine substituent on the open face of the complex in close proximity to the metal center yields complexes with strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) activity. This appears to be the first example of a system utilizing the same ligand architecture to sensitize four different lanthanide cations and display CPL activity. The luminescence dissymmetry factor, g(lum), recorded for the Eu(III) complex is one of the highest values reported, and this is the first time the CPL effect has been demonstrated for a Sm(III) complex with a chiral ligand. The combination of high luminescence intensity with CPL activity should enable new bioanalytical applications of macromolecules in chiral environments.

A [2]Rotaxane-Based Circularly Polarized Luminescence Switch.

Project description:A rotaxane-based molecular shuttle has been synthesized in which the switching of the position of a fluorescent macrocycle on the thread turns "on" or "off" the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of the system while maintaining similar fluorescence profiles and quantum yields in both states. The chiroptical activity relies on the chiral information transfer from an ammonium salt incorporating d- or l-phenylalanine residues as chiral stereogenic covalent units to an otherwise achiral crown ether macrocycle bearing a luminescent 2,2'-bipyrene unit when they interact through hydrogen bonding. Each enantiomeric thread induces CPL responses of opposite signs on the macrocycle. Upon addition of base, the switching of the position of the macrocycle to a triazolium group disables the chiral information transfer to the macrocycle, switching "off" the CPL response. The in situ switching upon several acid/base cycles is also demonstrated.

Circularly polarized luminescence from organic micro-/nano-structures.

Project description:Circularly polarized light exhibits promising applications in future displays and photonic technologies. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from chiral luminophores is an ideal approach to directly generating circularly polarized light, in which the energy loss induced by the circularly polarized filters can be reduced. Among various chiral luminophores, organic micro-/nano-structures have attracted increasing attention owing to the high quantum efficiency and luminescence dissymmetry factor. Herein, the recent progress of CPL from organic micro-/nano-structures is summarized. Firstly, the design principles of CPL-active organic micro-/nano-structures are expounded from the construction of micro-/nano-structure and the introduction of chirality. Based on these design principles, several typical organic micro-/nano-structures with CPL activity are introduced in detail, including self-assembly of small molecules, self-assembly of π-conjugated polymers, and self-assembly on micro-/nanoscale architectures. Subsequently, we discuss the external stimuli that can regulate CPL performance, including solvents, pH value, metal ions, mechanical force, and temperature. We also summarize the applications of CPL-active materials in organic light-emitting diodes, optical information processing, and chemical and biological sensing. Finally, the current challenges and prospects in this emerging field are presented. It is expected that this review will provide a guide for the design of excellent CPL-active materials.

Sequentially amplified circularly polarized ultraviolet luminescence for enantioselective photopolymerization.

Project description:Chiral optical materials based on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have emerged rapidly due to their feasible applications in diverse fields of research. However, limited to the small luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum), real application examples have rarely been reported. Here, we present a complex system, which show intense circularly polarized ultraviolet luminescence (CPUVL) with large glum value, enabling a chiral UV light triggered enantioselective polymerization. By integrating sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion and CPL, both visible-to-UV upconversion emission and upconverted circularly polarized ultraviolet luminescence (UC-CPUVL) were obtained in the systems, built of chiral annihilator R(S)-4,12-biphenyl[2,2]paracyclophane (R-/S-TP), and a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) sensitizer. After dispersing this upconversion system into room-temperature nematic liquid crystal, induced chiral nematic liquid crystal could significantly amplify the glum value (0.19) of UC-CPUVL. Further, the UC-CPUVL emission has been used to trigger the enantioselective photopolymerization of diacetylene. This work paves the way for the further development of functional application of CPL active materials.

Chiroptical spectra of a series of tetrakis((+)-3-heptafluorobutylyrylcamphorato)lanthanide(III) with an encapsulated alkali metal ion: circularly polarized luminescence and absolute chiral structures for the Eu(III) and Sm(III) complexes.

Project description:The luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra of M(I)[Eu((+)-hfbc)(4)] show a similar behavior to the exciton CD in the intraligand ?-?* transitions when the alkali metal ions and solvents are manipulated. There is a difference in susceptibility in solvation toward the alkali metal ions but not toward the Eu(III) ion, as in the case of axially symmetric DOTA-type compounds. The remarkable CPL in the 4f-4f transitions provide much more information on the stereospecific formation of chiral Eu(III) complexes, since CPL spectroscopy is limited to luminescent species and reflects selectively toward helicity of the local structural environment around the lanthanide(III). While in comparison, exciton CD reveals the chiral structural information from the helical arrangement of the four bladed chelates. Of special importance, the observation of the highest CPL activities measured to date for lanthanide(III)-containing compounds (i.e., Eu and Sm) in solution supports the theory that the chirality of lanthanide(III) in the excited state corresponds to that in the ground state, which was derived from the exciton CD.

Chiral Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Helicene Polymer With Efficient Red Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

Project description:Chiral diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-helicene polymers were synthesized to develop efficient red circularly polarized (CP) light emitters. These original chiral dyes display intense electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and CP luminescence (CPL) in the far-red spectral region owing to the presence of excitonic coupling between achiral DPPs within the chiral environment of the polymeric structure. This work affords an interesting example illustrating the potential of π-conjugated helical polymers for chiral optoelectronic applications.

A chemosensor-based chiral coassembly with switchable circularly polarized luminescence.

Project description:Fluorescent chemosensors represent fast response to analytes with pronounced luminescent variations. They are promising as potential candidates in controlling luminescence and chiroptical activities of self-assembled chiral systems, which however have not been accomplished to date. We present a coassembled multiple component system that could respond to SO2 derivatives, giving rise to dynamic aggregation behaviors and switchable luminescence as well as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Cholesteryl-naphthalimide and coumarin derivatives coassemble into vesicles and nanohelices under the solvent strategy, behaving as energy transfer donor and accepter respectively. Energy transfer enables CPL transition from green to red depending on the molar fraction. After the addition of SO2 derivatives, hypochromic shifts occur to CPL due to the nucleophilic addition reaction to coumarin domain, hindering energy transfer and allow for the emergence of pristine luminescence. Here, we show a protocol to control over luminescence and chiroptical features of supramolecular chiral self-assemblies using fluorescent chemosensors.

A promising change in the selection of the circular polarization excitation used in the measurement of Eu(III) circularly polarized luminescence.

Project description:A judicious change in the selected transition used for circular polarization excitation will overcome the low oscillator strength limitation of the currently allowed magnetic-dipole (5)D1 <-- (7)F2 (Eu(III)) transition chosen for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurement. The proposed allowed magnetic-dipole (5)D1 <-- (7)F0 (Eu(III)) transition will facilitate the detection of CPL from the Eu(III) systems of interest. CPL on the acetonitrile solution of the chiral tris complex of Eu(III) with (R,R)-N,N'-bis(1-phenylethyl)-2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide ([Eu((R,R)-1)3](3+)), recently suggested as an effective and reliable CPL calibrating agent, confirms the feasibility of the proposed experimental procedure. A comparable CPL activity exhibited by the acetonitrile solution of [Eu((R,R)-1)3](3+) following direct excitation in the spectral range of the (5)D1 <-- (7)F0 transition and upon indirect excitation through the ligand absorption bands (lambda(exc) = 308 nm) was observed. This confirms that the recommended magnetic-dipole allowed absorption transition, (5)D1 <-- (7)F0, is the transition to be considered in the measurement of CPL. This work provides critical direction for the continued instrumental improvements that can be done for developing CPL into a biomolecular structural probe.

Potential switchable circularly polarized luminescence from chiral cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes.

Project description:A series of chiral cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes, [Pt((-)-L1)(Dmpi)]Cl ((-)-1), [Pt((+)-L1)(Dmpi)]Cl ((+)-1), [Pt((-)-L2)(Dmpi)]Cl ((-)-2), [Pt((+)-L2)(Dmpi)]Cl ((+)-2), [Pt3((-)-L2)2(Dmpi)4](ClO4)4 ((-)-3), and [Pt3((+)-L2)2(Dmpi)4](ClO4)4 ((+)-3) [(-)-L1 = (-)-4,5-pinene-6'-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine, (+)-L1 = (+)-4,5-pinene-6'-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine), (-)-L2 = (-)-1,3-bis(2-(4,5-pinene)pyridyl)benzene, (+)-L2 = (+)-1,3-bis(2-(4,5-pinene)pyridyl)benzene, Dmpi = 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide], have been designed and synthesized. In aqueous solutions, (-)-1 and (+)-1 aggregate into one-dimensional helical chain structures through Pt···Pt, ?-?, and hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions. (-)-3 and (+)-3 represent a novel helical structure with Pt-Pt bonds. The formation of helical structures results in enhanced and distinct chiroptical properties as evidenced by circular dichroism spectra. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) was observed from the aggregates of (-)-1 and (+)-1 in water, as well as (-)-3 and (+)-3 in dichloromethane. The CPL activity can be switched reversibly (for (-)-1 and (+)-1) or irreversibly (for (-)-3 and (+)-3) by varying the temperature.

Chirality and energy transfer amplified circularly polarized luminescence in composite nanohelix.

Project description:Transfer of both chirality and energy information plays an important role in biological systems. Here we show a chiral donor ?-gelator and assembled it with an achiral ?-acceptor to see how chirality and energy can be transferred in a composite donor-acceptor system. It is found that the individual chiral gelator can self-assemble into nanohelix. In the presence of the achiral acceptor, the self-assembly can also proceed and lead to the formation of the composite nanohelix. In the composite nanohelix, an energy transfer is realized. Interestingly, in the composite nanohelix, the achiral acceptor can both capture the supramolecular chirality and collect the circularly polarized energy from the chiral donor, showing both supramolecular chirality and energy transfer amplified circularly polarized luminescence (ETACPL).
