In the crystal structure, inter-molecular O-H?N hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules.

Project description:The title compound, C12H8N2O2, was prepared by the reaction of the diethyl ester of naphthalene-bis-(oxamate) with tert-BuNH2. The mol-ecule is nearly planar, with an r.m.s. deviation of 0.017?Å from the plane through all 16 non-H atoms. In the crystal, a three-dimensional network is formed, composed of layers of mol-ecules along the b- and c-axis directions, due to the formation of inter-molecular N-H?O hydrogen bonds, as well as of chains along the a-axis direction due to parallel displaced sandwich-type ?-? inter-actions with average distances between the inter-acting mol-ecules in the range 3.35-3.40?Å.

These dimers then form staircase-like linear chains through further ?-stacking between the benzenoid rings [centroid-centroid distance of 3.761?(2)?Å]. Optical control of AMPA receptors using a photoswitchable quinoxaline-2,3-dione antagonist.

Project description:AMPA receptors respond to the neurotransmitter glutamate and play a critical role in excitatory neurotransmission. They have been implicated in several psychiatric disorders and have rich pharmacology. Antagonists of AMPA receptors have been explored as drugs and one has even reached the clinic. We now introduce a freely diffusible photoswitchable antagonist that is selective for AMPA receptors and endows them with light-sensitivity. Our photoswitch, ShuBQX-3, is active in its dark-adapted trans-isoform but is significantly less active as its cis-isoform. ShuBQX-3 exhibits a remarkable red-shifting of its photoswitching properties through interactions with the AMPA receptor ligand binding site. Since it can be used to control action potential firing with light, it could emerge as a powerful tool for studying synaptic transmission with high spatial and temporal precision.

Project description:Two new 5,12-disubstituted 2,3-di-ethyl-naphtho-[2,3-g]quinoxaline-6,11-dione compounds were readily synthesized from the commercial dye quinizarin. For 2,3-diethyl-5,12-di-hydroxy-naphtho-[2,3-g]quinoxaline-6,11-dione, (II), C20H16N2O4, the mol-ecule displays a near planar conformation and both hy-droxy groups participate in intra-molecular O-H?O(carbon-yl) hydrogen bonds. In the crystal, ?-? ring inter-actions [minimum ring centroid separation = 3.5493?(9)?Å] form stacks of co-planar mol-ecules down the c axis, while only minor inter-molecular C-H?O inter-actions are present. In contrast, in 2,3-diethyl-5,12-bis-(piperidin-1-yl)naphtho-[2,3-g]quinoxaline-6,11-dione, (IV), C30H34N4O2, which contains two independent, but similar, mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit, the polycyclic cores have a significant twist, with dihedral angles of 29.79?(6) and 29.31?(7)° between the terminal rings and only minor inter-molecular C-H?O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions are present. Electron density associated with additional solvent mol-ecules disordered about a fourfold axis was accounted for using the SQUEEZE procedure in PLATON [Spek (2015 ?). Acta Cryst. C71, 9-18].

Project description:In the title compound, C(16)H(13)NO(2), the 2,3-dimethyl-phenyl group and the 1H-isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione group are essentially planar, with r.m.s. deviations of 0.006 and 0.013 Å, respectively, and are oriented at an angle of 78.19 (3)° with respect to each other. In the crystal, weak C-H⋯O inter-actions link the mol-ecules, forming a zigzag chain parallel to the b axis. Futhermore, C-H⋯π inter-actions are present between the C-H group of isoindole and the 2,3-dimethyl-phenyl benzene ring. The H atoms of the ortho-methyl group are statistically disordered over two positions. Such disorder might be related to the antagonism between intra-molecular steric repulsions and inter-molecular C-H⋯O inter-actions.
