Triaqua-chlorido(1,10-phenanthroline-κN,N')cobalt(II) chloride monohydrate.

ABSTRACT: In the title compound, [CoCl(C(12)H(8)N(2))(H(2)O)(3)]Cl·H(2)O, the Co(II) ion is coordinated by two N atoms from the 1,10-phenanthroline ligand [Co-N = 2.125 (6) and 2.146 (6) Å], one chloride ligand [Co-Cl = 2.459 (2)Å] and three water mol-ecules [Co-O = 2.070 (5)-2.105 (5)Å] in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. Inter-molecular O-H⋯Cl and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds form an extensive three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding network, which consolidates the crystal packing.

An inter-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bond occurs. The carboxyl-ate entity coordinates through the amino group. The carboxyl-ate donor unit, coordinated and uncoordinated water mol-ecules inter-act through O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, generating a tightly-held three-dimensional cage-like network.

Project description:In the title complex, [PtCl(4)(C(12)H(8)N(2))]·H(2)O, the Pt(4+) ion is six-coordinated in a distorted octa-hedral environment by two N atoms of a 1,10-phenanthroline ligand and by four Cl atoms. As a result of the different trans effects of the N and Cl atoms, the Pt-Cl bonds trans to the N atom are slightly shorter than those trans to the Cl atom. The compound displays inter-molecular π-π inter-actions between the six-membered rings, with a centroid-centroid distance of 3.834 Å. There are also weak intra-molecular C-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds. According to the IR spectrum, solvent water was present in the crystal, but owing to the high thermal motion of the uncoordinated O atom, the H atoms could not be detected.

Project description:In the title complex, [CoCl(C(12)H(8)N(2))(2)(H(2)O)]Cl·2.5H(2)O, the Co(II) ion is coordinated by four N atoms of two bis-chelating 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) ligands, one water mol-ecule and a chloride ligand in a distorted octa-hedral environment. The dihedral angle between the two phen ligands is 84.21 (3)°. In the crystal structure, complex mol-ecules and chloride ions are linked into centrosymmetric four-component clusters by inter-molecular O-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds. Of the 2.5 solvent water mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit, two were refined as disordered over two sites with fixed occupancies of ratios 0.50:0.50 and 0.60:0.40, while another was refined with half occupancy.

The metal atom is also chelated by the N-heterocycle. The dianion, and coordinated and uncoordinated water mol-ecules inter-act through hydrogen bonds, generating a layer motif. The crystal studied was a racemic twin with a 0.62 (2):0.38 (2) domain ratio.
