Silver europium(III) polyphosphate.

ABSTRACT: Europium(III) silver polyphosphate, AgEu(PO(3))(4), was prepared by the flux method. The atomic arrangement is built up by infinite (PO(3))(n) chains (periodicity of 4) extending along the c axis. These chains are joined to each other by EuO(8) dodeca-hedra. The Ag(+) cations are located in the voids of this arrangement and are surrounded by five oxygen atoms in a distorted [4+1] coordination.

Sodium terbium(III) polyphosphate.

Project description:Single crystals of the title compound, NaTb(PO(3))(4), were obtained by solid-state reaction. This compound belongs to type II of long-chain polyphosphates with the general formula A(I)B(III)(PO(3))(4). It is isotypic with the NaNd(PO(3))(4) and NaEr(PO(3))(4) homologues. The crystal structure is built up of infinite crenelated chains of corner-sharing PO(4) tetra-hedra with a repeating unit of four tetra-hedra. These chains, extending parallel to [100], are linked by isolated TbO(8) square anti-prisms, forming a three-dimensional framework. The Na(+) ions are located in channels running along [010] and are surrounded by six oxygen atoms in a distorted octa-hedral environment within a cut-off distance <2.9?Å.

Enantioselective cellular localisation of europium(iii) coordination complexes.

Project description:The selective mitochondrial localisation of the Λ enantiomer of three different emissive europium(iii) complexes in NIH 3T3 and MCF7 cells contrasts with the behaviour of the Δ enantiomer, for which a predominant lysosomal localisation was observed by confocal microscopy. In each case, cell uptake occurs via macropinocytosis.

Synthesis of Organosilicon Ligands for Europium (III) and Gadolinium (III) as Potential Imaging Agents.

Project description:The relaxivity of MRI contrast agents can be increased by increasing the size of the contrast agent and by increasing concentration of the bound gadolinium. Large multi-site ligands able to coordinate several metal centres show increased relaxivity as a result. In this paper, an "aza-type Michael" reaction is used to prepare cyclen derivatives that can be attached to organosilicon frameworks via hydrosilylation reactions. A range of organosilicon frameworks were tested including silsesquioxane cages and dimethylsilylbenzene derivatives. Michael donors with strong electron withdrawing groups could be used to alkylate cyclen on three amine centres in a single step. Hydrosilylation successfully attached these to mono-, di-, and tri-dimethylsilyl-substituted benzene derivatives. The europium and gadolinium complexes were formed and studied using luminescence spectroscopy and relaxometry. This showed the complexes to contain two bound water moles per lanthanide centre and T1 relaxation time measurements demonstrated an increase in relaxivity had been achieved, in particular for the trisubstituted scaffold 1,3,5-tris((pentane-sDO3A)dimethylsilyl)benzene-Gd3. This showed a marked increase in the relaxivity (13.1 r1p/mM-1s-1).

Europium(III) DOTA-tetraamide complexes as redox-active MRI sensors.

Project description:PARACEST redox sensors containing the NAD(+)/NADH mimic N-methylquinolinium moiety as a redox-active functional group have been designed and synthesized. The Eu(3+) complex with two quinolinium moieties was nearly completely CEST-silent in the oxidized form but was "turned on" upon reduction with ?-NADH. The CEST effect of the Eu(3+) complex containing only one quinolinium group was much less redox-responsive but showed an unexpected sensitivity to pH in the physiologically relevant pH range.

Effect of the Counterion on Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Europium(III) and Samarium(III) Complexes.

Project description:Each enantiopure europium(III) and samarium(III) nitrate and triflate complex of the ligand L, with L = N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethylidene)-1,2-(R,R + S,S)-cyclohexanediamine ([LnL(tta)2]·NO3 and [LnL(tta)2(H2O)]·CF3SO3, where tta = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetylacetonate) has been synthesized and characterized from a spectroscopic point of view, using a chiroptical technique such as electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). In all cases, both ligands are capable of sensitizing the luminescence of both metal ions upon absorption of light around 280 and 350 nm. Despite small differences in the total luminescence (TL) and ECD spectra, the CPL activity of the complexes is strongly influenced by a concurrent effect of the solvent and counterion. This particularly applies to europium(III) complexes where the CPL spectra in acetonitrile can be described as a weighed linear combination of the CPL spectra in dichloromethane and methanol, which show nearly opposite signatures when their ligand stereochemistries are the same. This phenomenon could be related to the presence of equilibria interconverting solvated, anion-coordinated complexes and isomers differing by the relative orientation of the tta ligands. The difference between some bond lengths (M-N bonds, in particular) in the different species could be at the basis of such an unusual CPL activity.

Variable Dimensionality of Europium(III) and Terbium(III) Coordination Compounds with a Flexible Hexacarboxylate Ligand.

Project description:A reaction between 4,4',4″-(benzene-1,3,5-triyltris(oxy))triphthalic acid (H6L) and lanthanide(III) nitrates (Ln = Eu3+, Tb3+) in water under the same conditions gave a molecular coordination compound [Tb(H4.5L)2(H2O)5]∙6H2O in the case of terbium(III) and a one-dimensional linear coordination polymer {[Eu2(H3L)2(H2O)6]∙8H2O}n in the case of europium(III). The crystal structures of both compounds were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and they were further characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The compounds demonstrated characteristic lanthanide-centered photoluminescence. The lanthanide-dependent dimensionality of the synthesized compounds, which are the first examples of the coordination compounds of hexacarboxylic acid H6L demonstrates its potential as a linker for new coordination polymers.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, {[Eu(C(7)H(3)NO(4))Cl(CH(3)OH)(2)]·CH(3)OH}(n), contains one Eu(III) ion, one pyridine 2,3-dicarboxylate dianion (PDC), two CH(3)OH mol-ecules coordinating to the metal atom, one coordinating chloride and one lattice occluded CH(3)OH mol-ecule. In the crystal, each PDC anion coordinates to three adjacent Eu(III) ions by the pyridine N and O atoms of the carboxyl-ate groups. The Eu(III) cation is eightfold coordinated by four carboxyl-ate O atoms, one pyridine N atom, two MeOH and one chloride anion in the form of a distorted polyhedron. Extended coordination of the PDC ligand lead to the formation of a two-dimensional coordination polymer parallel to (10-1).

Project description:In the title coordination polymer, {[Eu(C(7)H(2)NO(5))(H(2)O)(3)]·H(2)O}(n), the Eu(III) atom is eight-coordinated by a tridentate 4-oxidopyridine-2,6-dicarboxyl-ate (hpc) trianion, two monodentate hpc anions and three water mol-ecules, forming a distorted bicapped trigonal-prismatic coordination geometry. The hpc ligands bridge adjacent Eu(III) ions, forming infinite double chains. Adjacent chains are further connected by hpc ligands into sheets. O-H?O hydrogen bonds then generate a three-dimensional supra-molecular framework.
