ABSTRACT: The selective mitochondrial localisation of the Λ enantiomer of three different emissive europium(iii) complexes in NIH 3T3 and MCF7 cells contrasts with the behaviour of the Δ enantiomer, for which a predominant lysosomal localisation was observed by confocal microscopy. In each case, cell uptake occurs via macropinocytosis.

Project description:PARACEST redox sensors containing the NAD(+)/NADH mimic N-methylquinolinium moiety as a redox-active functional group have been designed and synthesized. The Eu(3+) complex with two quinolinium moieties was nearly completely CEST-silent in the oxidized form but was "turned on" upon reduction with ?-NADH. The CEST effect of the Eu(3+) complex containing only one quinolinium group was much less redox-responsive but showed an unexpected sensitivity to pH in the physiologically relevant pH range.

Variable Dimensionality of Europium(III) and Terbium(III) Coordination Compounds with a Flexible Hexacarboxylate Ligand.

Project description:A reaction between 4,4',4″-(benzene-1,3,5-triyltris(oxy))triphthalic acid (H6L) and lanthanide(III) nitrates (Ln = Eu3+, Tb3+) in water under the same conditions gave a molecular coordination compound [Tb(H4.5L)2(H2O)5]∙6H2O in the case of terbium(III) and a one-dimensional linear coordination polymer {[Eu2(H3L)2(H2O)6]∙8H2O}n in the case of europium(III). The crystal structures of both compounds were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and they were further characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The compounds demonstrated characteristic lanthanide-centered photoluminescence. The lanthanide-dependent dimensionality of the synthesized compounds, which are the first examples of the coordination compounds of hexacarboxylic acid H6L demonstrates its potential as a linker for new coordination polymers.

Structure-Dependent Photoluminescence of Europium(III) Coordination Oligomeric Silsesquioxane: Synthesis and Mechanism.

Project description:The coordination environment of Eu3+ is a crucial factor in the optical performance of the complex. Herein, a new kind of oligomeric silsesquioxane was employed to improve the coordination environment of central ions, the luminescence intensity of which was greatly enhanced with an efficient emission peak at 619 nm. More importantly, the photoluminescent properties of the product will be altered because of the formation of the Si-O-Si structure. The relevant mechanism has also been investigated and proposed by a series of characterization analyses. Additionally, the fluorescence lifetime, intrinsic quantum yield, and energy transfer efficiency were calculated. In addition, the observed trend of Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters was used to justify the coordination environment of Eu3+ ions. The experimental results reveal that the sol-gel reaction of the ligands can effectively promote intramolecular energy transfer. In addition, we introduced four theory modules of ligands (LSi, LSi-1, LSi-2, and LSi-3) with certain rules of formation of Si-O-Si, and density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) were used to explore their excited electron transfer process and their electronic absorption spectra, combined with Marcus theory. The calculated results show that the sol-gel reaction will induce the separation of the distribution of excited holes and electrons, leading to an efficient charge-transfer (CT) process. The predictable results were in good accordance with the experimental findings. Consequently, the sol-gel reaction occurring among ligands will be attributed to an efficient CT process, leading to a strong luminescence intensity, as observed experimentally.

Effect of the Counterion on Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Europium(III) and Samarium(III) Complexes.

Project description:Each enantiopure europium(III) and samarium(III) nitrate and triflate complex of the ligand L, with L = N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethylidene)-1,2-(R,R + S,S)-cyclohexanediamine ([LnL(tta)2]·NO3 and [LnL(tta)2(H2O)]·CF3SO3, where tta = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetylacetonate) has been synthesized and characterized from a spectroscopic point of view, using a chiroptical technique such as electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). In all cases, both ligands are capable of sensitizing the luminescence of both metal ions upon absorption of light around 280 and 350 nm. Despite small differences in the total luminescence (TL) and ECD spectra, the CPL activity of the complexes is strongly influenced by a concurrent effect of the solvent and counterion. This particularly applies to europium(III) complexes where the CPL spectra in acetonitrile can be described as a weighed linear combination of the CPL spectra in dichloromethane and methanol, which show nearly opposite signatures when their ligand stereochemistries are the same. This phenomenon could be related to the presence of equilibria interconverting solvated, anion-coordinated complexes and isomers differing by the relative orientation of the tta ligands. The difference between some bond lengths (M-N bonds, in particular) in the different species could be at the basis of such an unusual CPL activity.

Stable Europium(III) Complexes with Short Linkers for Site-Specific Labeling of Biomolecules.

Project description:In this study, two new terpyridine-based EuIII complexes were synthesized, the structures of which were optimized for luminescence resonance energy-transfer (LRET) experiments. The complexes showed high quantum yields (32?%); a single long lifetime (1.25?ms), which was not influenced by coupling to protein; very high stability in the presence of chelators such as ethylenediamine-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetate and ethylene glycol-bis(2-aminoethylether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid; and no interaction with cofactors such as adenosine triphosphate and guanosine triphosphate. A special feature is the short length of the linker between the EuIII ion and the maleimide or hydrazide function, which allows for site-specific coupling of cysteine mutants or unnatural keto amino acids. As a consequence, the new complexes appear particularly suited for accurate distance measurements in biomolecules by LRET.

Europium (III) Organic Complexes in Porous Boron Nitride Microfibers: Efficient Hybrid Luminescent Material.

Project description:We report the design and synthesis of a novel kind of organic-inorganic hybrid material via the incorporation of europium (III) ?-diketonate complexes (Eu(TTA)3, TTA?=?2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone) into one-dimensional (1D) porous boron nitride (BN) microfibers. The developed Eu(TTA)3@BN hybrid composites with typical 1D fibrous morphology exhibit bright visible red-light emission on UV illumination. The confinement of Eu(TTA)3 within pores of BN microfibers not only decreases the aggregation-caused quenching in solid Eu(TTA)3, but also improves their thermal stabilities. Moreover, The strong interactions between Eu(TTA)3 and porous BN matrix result in an interesting energy transfer process from BN host to TTA ligand and TTA ligand to Eu3+ ions, leading to the remarkable increase of red emission. The synthetic approach should be a very promising strategy which can be easily expanded to other hybrid luminescent materials based on porous BN.

Sensing Uranyl(VI) Ions by Coordination and Energy Transfer to a Luminescent Europium(III) Complex.

Project description:The release of uranyl(VI) is a hazardous environmental issue, with limited ways to monitor accumulation in situ. Here, we present a method for the detection of uranyl(VI) ions through the utilization of a unique fluorescence energy transfer process to europium(III). Our system displays the first example of a "turn-on" europium(III) emission process with a small, water-soluble lanthanide complex triggered by uranyl(VI) ions.

Exceptional Oxygen Sensing Properties of New Blue Light-Excitable Highly Luminescent Europium(III) and Gadolinium(III) Complexes.

Project description:New europium(III) and gadolinium(III) complexes bearing 8-hydroxyphenalenone antenna combine efficient absorption in the blue part of the spectrum and strong emission in polymers at room temperature. The Eu(III) complexes show characteristic red luminescence whereas the Gd(III) dyes are strongly phosphorescent. The luminescence quantum yields are about 20% for the Eu(III) complexes and 50% for the Gd(III) dyes. In contrast to most state-of-the-art Eu(III) complexes the new dyes are quenched very efficiently by molecular oxygen. The luminescence decay times of the Gd(III) complexes exceed 1 ms which ensures exceptional sensitivity even in polymers of moderate oxygen permeability. These sensors are particularly suitable for trace oxygen sensing and may be good substitutes for Pd(II) porphyrins. The photophysical and sensing properties can be tuned by varying the nature of the fourth ligand. The narrow-band emission of the Eu(III) allows efficient elimination of the background light and autofluorescence and is also very attractive for use e.g. in multi-analyte sensors. The highly photostable indicators incorporated in nanoparticles are promising for imaging applications. Due to the straightforward preparation and low cost of starting materials the new dyes represent a promising alternative to the state-of-the-art oxygen indicators particularly for such applications as e.g. food packaging.

Project description:Lanthanide(III) complexes of macrocycles 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (THED) and (1S,4S,7S,10S)-1,4,7,10-tetrakis(2-hydroxypropyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (S-THP) were studied as chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications. The four hyperfine-shifted alcohol protons of these Ln(III) complexes gave rise to a single (1)H resonance in wet d(3)-acetonitrile that was separated from the bulk water resonance (Delta omega) by 8 ppm (Ce), 2 ppm (Nd), 7 ppm (Eu), or 17 ppm (Yb). A CEST peak corresponding to the alcohol protons was observed for all Ln(THED)(3+) or Ln(S-THP)(3+) complexes except Nd(III) at low water concentrations (<1%). In 100% aqueous buffered solutions, the CEST hydroxyl peak is observed for the Eu(III), Ce(III), and Yb(III) complexes over a range of pH values. The optimal pH range for the CEST effect of each complex is related to the pK(a) of the hydroxyl/water ligands of the complex. Optimum pH values for the CEST effect from alcohol proton exchange are pH = 6.0 for Ce(S-THP)(3+), pH = 4.5 for Eu(THED)(3+), and pH = 3.0 for Yb(S-THP)(3+).

Silver europium(III) polyphosphate.

Project description:Europium(III) silver polyphosphate, AgEu(PO(3))(4), was prepared by the flux method. The atomic arrangement is built up by infinite (PO(3))(n) chains (periodicity of 4) extending along the c axis. These chains are joined to each other by EuO(8) dodeca-hedra. The Ag(+) cations are located in the voids of this arrangement and are surrounded by five oxygen atoms in a distorted [4+1] coordination.
