Magnesocenophane-Catalyzed Amine Borane Dehydrocoupling.

Project description:The Lewis acidities of a series of [n]magnesocenophanes (1 a-d) have been investigated computationally and found to be a function of the tilt of the cyclopentadienyl moieties. Their catalytic abilities in amine borane dehydrogenation/dehydrocoupling reactions have been probed, and C[1]magnesocenophane (1 a) has been shown to effectively catalyze the dehydrogenation/dehydrocoupling of dimethylamine borane (2 a) and diisopropylamine borane (2 b) under ambient conditions. Furthermore, the mechanism of the reaction with 2 a has been investigated experimentally and computationally, and the results imply a ligand-assisted mechanism involving stepwise proton and hydride transfer, with dimethylaminoborane as the key intermediate.

Dehydropolymerisation of Methylamine Borane and an N-Substituted Primary Amine Borane Using a PNP Fe Catalyst.

Project description:Dehydropolymerisation of methylamine borane (H3 B⋅NMeH2 ) using the well-known iron amido complex [(PNP)Fe(H)(CO)] (PNP=N(CH2 CH2 PiPr2 )2 ) (1) gives poly(aminoborane)s by a chain-growth mechanism. In toluene, rapid dehydrogenation of H3 B⋅NMeH2 following first-order behaviour as a limiting case of a more general underlying Michaelis-Menten kinetics is observed, forming aminoborane H2 B=NMeH, which selectively couples to give high-molecular-weight poly(aminoborane)s (H2 BNMeH)n and only traces of borazine (HBNMe)3 by depolymerisation after full conversion. Based on a series of comparative experiments using structurally related Fe catalysts and dimethylamine borane (H3 B⋅NMe2 H) polymer formation is proposed to occur by nucleophilic chain growth as reported earlier computationally and experimentally. A silyl functionalised primary borane H3 B⋅N(CH2 SiMe3 )H2 was studied in homo- and co-dehydropolymerisation reactions to give the first examples for Si containing poly(aminoborane)s.

N,N-Bis(diphenyl-phosphanyl)cyclo-propyl-amine.

Project description:In the title compound, C(27)H(25)NP(2), the diphenyl-phosphino groups are staggered relative to the PNP backbone. The dihedral angles between the phenyl rings bonded to each P atom are 51.74?(5) and 68.23?(4)°. The coordination around the N atom deviates from trigonal-pyrimidal geometry towards an almost planar arrangement between the N atom and the adjacent P and C atoms; the distance between the N atom and the plane formed by the adjacent C/P/P atoms is 0.098?(2)?Å.

The Simplest Amino-borane H2 B=NH2 Trapped on a Rhodium Dimer: Pre-Catalysts for Amine-Borane Dehydropolymerization.

Project description:The μ-amino-borane complexes [Rh2 (L(R) )2 (μ-H)(μ-H2 B=NHR')][BAr(F) 4 ] (L(R) =R2 P(CH2 )3 PR2 ; R=Ph, (i) Pr; R'=H, Me) form by addition of H3 B⋅NMeR'H2 to [Rh(L(R) )(η(6) -C6 H5 F)][BAr(F) 4 ]. DFT calculations demonstrate that the amino-borane interacts with the Rh centers through strong Rh-H and Rh-B interactions. Mechanistic investigations show that these dimers can form by a boronium-mediated route, and are pre-catalysts for amine-borane dehydropolymerization, suggesting a possible role for bimetallic motifs in catalysis.

Project description:The diphenyl-phosphine groups in the title compound, C(29)H(31)NP(2), are staggered relative to the PNP backbone. The N atom adopts an almost planar geometry with the two P atoms and the C atom attached to it, in order to accommodate the steric bulk of the phenyl groups and the alkyl group. Three C atoms of the 1,2-dimethylpropylamine group are disordered over two positions in a 9:1 ratio. The mol-ecules pack diagonally in the unit cell across the ac plane in a head-to-tail fashion.

Probing the second dehydrogenation step in ammonia-borane dehydrocoupling: characterization and reactivity of the key intermediate, B-(cyclotriborazanyl)amine-borane.

Project description:While thermolysis of ammonia-borane (AB) affords a mixture of aminoborane- and iminoborane oligomers, the most selective metal-based catalysts afford exclusively cyclic iminoborane trimer (borazine) and its B-N cross-linked oligomers (polyborazylene). This catalysed dehydrogenation sequence proceeds through a branched cyclic aminoborane oligomer assigned previously as trimeric B-(cyclodiborazanyl)amine-borane (BCDB). Herein we utilize multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography to show instead that this key intermediate is actually tetrameric B-(cyclotriborazanyl)amine-borane (BCTB) and a method is presented for its selective synthesis from AB. The reactivity of BCTB upon thermal treatment as well as catalytic dehydrogenation is studied and discussed with regard to facilitating the second dehydrogenation step in AB dehydrocoupling.

Project description:The Pt(II) atom in the title compound, [PtCl(2)(C(27)H(27)NP(2))], has a highly distorted square-planar geometry, as evidenced by the P-Pt-P bite angle [72.4?(1)°]. The strain in the complex is further illustrated by the distorted tetra-hedral angles of the P atoms, which range between 93.5?(1) and 122.2?(1)°. It is of inter-est to note that the N atom has to adopt an almost planar geometry with the two P atoms and the C atom attached to it [it is displaced by 0.093?(2)?Å from the CP(2) plane] in order to accommodate the steric bulk of the phenyl groups and the alkyl group of the ligand coordinated to the Pt(II) centre. The mol-ecules pack in horizontal rows across the bc plane. C-H?Cl hydrogen bonds stabilize the crystal packing.

A Highly Active Bidentate Magnesium Catalyst for Amine-Borane Dehydrocoupling: Kinetic and Mechanistic Studies.

Project description:A magnesium complex (1) featuring a bidentate aminopyridinato ligand is a remarkably selective catalyst for the dehydrocoupling of amine-boranes. This reaction proceeds to completion with low catalyst loadings (1 mol %) under mild conditions (60 °C), exceeding previously reported s-block systems in terms of selectivity, rate, and turnover number (TON). Mechanistic studies by in situ NMR analysis reveals the reaction to be first order in both catalyst and substrate. A reaction mechanism is proposed to account for these findings, with the high TON of the catalyst attributed to the bidentate nature of the ligand, which allows for reversible deprotonation of the substrate and regeneration of 1 as a stable resting state.

Synthesis: Molecular Structure, Thermal-Calorimetric and Computational Analyses, of Three New Amine Borane Adducts.

Project description:Cyclopropylamine borane C3H5NH2BH3 (C3AB), 2-ethyl-1-hexylamine borane CH3(CH2)3CH(C2H5)CH2NH2BH3 (C2C6AB) and didodecylamine borane (C12H25)2NHBH3 ((C12)2AB) are three new amine borane adducts (ABAs). They are synthesized by reaction of the corresponding amines with a borane complex, the reaction being exothermic as shown by Calvet calorimetry. The successful synthesis of each has been demonstrated by FTIR, Raman and NMR. For instance, the 11B NMR spectra show the presence of signals typical of the NBH3 environment, thereby implying the formation of B-N bonds. The occurrence of dihydrogen bonds (DHBs) for each of the ABAs has been highlighted by DSC and FTIR, and supported by DFT calculations (via the Mulliken charges for example). When heated, the three ABAs behave differently: C3AB and C2C6AB decompose from 68 to 100 °C whereas (C12)2AB is relatively stable up to 173 °C. That means that these ABAs are not appropriate as hydrogen carriers, but the 'most' stable (C12)2AB could open perspectives for the synthesis of advanced materials.
