AMPA receptors (AMPARs) are tetrameric ion channels that mediate rapid glutamate signaling in neurons and many non-neuronal cell types. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) quality control mechanisms permit only correctly folded functional receptors to be delivered to the cell surface.
