ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(16)H(23)NO(4), is essentially planar except for the last two C atoms in each n-butyl group (r.m.s. deviation from the least-squares plane = 0.02?Å for 17 non-H atoms). In the crystal, inter-molecular N-H?O hydrogen bonds between the amine and carbonyl groups link the mol-ecules into one-dimensional chains.

The I atoms and the benzene ring plane in the two mol-ecules are approximately coplanar, the I atoms deviating by -0.1631?(1), 0.0704?(1) and -0.0507?(1)?Å from the mean plane of the benzene ring in one mol-ecule and by 0.1500?(1), -0.0034?(1) and -0.1213?(1)?Å in the other. The planes of the ester groups are almost orthogonal to those of the benzene rings in both mol-ecules, forming dihedral angles of 83.5?(3), 76.4?(3), 97.3?(1) and 75.7?(1)°. The mean planes of the benzene rings in two mol-ecules are inclined at 69.8?(3)° with respect to each other. In the crystal, inter-molecular I?O inter-actions link the mol-ecules into infinite chains. In addition, N-H?O and non-classical C-H?O hydrogen bonds are observed.

Intra-molecular O-H?N hydrogen bonds result in the formation of planar six-membered rings, and these are nearly coplanar with the adjacent rings. In the crystal structure, ?-? contacts between the benzene rings [centroid-centroid distances = 3.989?(2), 3.802?(1) and 3.882?(1)?Å] may stabilize the structure.

Adenin-1-ium hydrogen isophthalate di-methyl-formamide monosolvate.

Project description:In the title proton-transfer organic salt, C5H6.3N5 (+)·C8H4.7O4 (-)·C3H7NO, the adeninium moiety is protonated at the N atom in the 1-position of the 6-amino-7H-purin-1-ium (adeninium) cation. In the solid state, the second acidic proton of isophthalic acid is partially transferred to the imidazole N atom of the adeninium cation [refined O-H versus N-H ratio = 0.70 (11):0.30 (11)]. Through the partially transferred proton, the adeninium cation is strongly hydrogen bonded (N-H⋯O/O-H⋯N) to the isophthalate anion. This strong inter-action is assisted by another N-H⋯O hydrogen bond originating from the adeninium NH2 group towards the isophthalate keto O atom, with an R (2) 2(8) graph-set motif. This arrangement is linked via N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds to the O atoms of the carboxyl-ate group of an isophthalate anion. Together, these hydrogen bonds lead to the formation criss-cross zigzag isophthalate⋯adeninium chains lying parallel to (501) and (50-1). The adeninium cations and the isophthalate anions are arranged in infinite π stacks that extend along the c-axis direction [inter-planar distance = 3.305 (3) Å]. Mol-ecules are inclined with respect to this direction and within the stacks they are offset by ca. half a mol-ecule each. Combination of the N-H⋯O and O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds with the π-π inter-actions forms infinitely stacked isophthalate⋯adeninium chains, thus leading to a two-dimensional supra-molecular structure with parallel inter-digitating layers formed by the π stacked isophthalate⋯adeninium chains. The DMF mol-ecules of crystallization are bonded to the adeninium cations through strong N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and project into the lattice space in between the anions and cations. There are also C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds present which, combined with the other inter-actions, form a three-dimensional network. The crystal under investigation was found to be split and was handled as if non-merohedrally twinned.

In one of the mol-ecules, the conformation of the O-C-O-C in one ester group is cis and trans in the other. The corresponding conformations for both the ester groups in the other mol-ecule are trans. The I atoms and the benzene rings in the two mol-ecules are approximately coplanar, the I atoms deviating by 0.219?(14), 0.056?(15) and -0.143?(14)?Å from the mean plane of the benzene ring in one mol-ecule and 0.189?(14), -0.162?(15) and -0.068?(14)?Å in the other. The planes of the ester groups are almost orthogonal to those of the benzene rings in both mol-ecules, forming dihedral angles of 88.1?(4), 72.2?(4), 73.0?(4) and 86.6?(4)°. The mean planes of the benzene rings in the two mol-ecules are inclined at 74.6?(4)° with respect to each other. In the crystal, inter-molecular I?O inter-actions [3.138?(7) and 3.144?(7)?Å] link the mol-ecules into infinite chains along the a axis. In addition, non-classical C-H?O hydrogen bonds are observed.
