Project description:Crystals of the ortho-rhom-bic phase La(4)Mo(7)O(27) (lanthanum molybdenum oxide) were obtained from a non-stoichiometric melt in the pseudo-ternary system La(2)O(3)-MoO(3)-B(2)O(3). In the crystal structure, distorted square-anti-prismatic [LaO(8)] and monocapped square-anti-prismatic [LaO(9)] polyhedra are connected via common edges and faces into chains along [010]. These chains are arranged in layers that alternate with layers of [MoO(4)] and [MoO(5)] polyhedra parallel to (001). In the molybdate layers, a distorted [MoO(5)] trigonal bipyramid is axially connected to two [MoO(4)] tetra-hedra, forming a [Mo(3)O(11)] unit.

Project description:The structure of the title compound, barium lanthanum bromide (11/4/34), can be derived from the fluorite structure. The asymmetric unit contains two Ba sites (one with site symmetry 4/m..), one La site (site symmetry 4..), one mixed-occupied Ba and La site (ratio 1:1, site symmetry m..) and six Br sites (one with site symmetry \=4.., one with 2.., one with m.., the latter being disordered over two positions with a 0.86:0.14 ratio). The fundamental building units of the structure are edge-sharing polyhedral clusters made up of Ba and La bromide clusters inter-connected to BaBr(8) square prisms and BaBr(10) groups.

Project description:In scheelite-type La(0.667)[MoO(4)], one crystallographically unique position with site symmetry -4.. and an occupancy of 2/3 is found for the La(3+) cation. The cation is surrounded by eight O atoms in the shape of a trigonal dodeca-hedron. The structure also contains one [MoO(4)](2-) anion (site symmetry -4..), which is surrounded by eight vertex-attached La(3+) cations. The polyhedra around the La(3+) cations are inter-connected via common edges, building up a three-dimensional network, in the tetra-hedral voids of which the Mo(6+) cations reside.

Project description:The title compound, [Ru(2)(CH(3)CO(2))(4)(C(6)H(4)N(2))(2)]PF(6)·C(2)H(4)Cl(2), was obtained via a rapid substitution reaction in 2-propanol whereby 3-cyano-pyridine replaces the axial water mol-ecules in the diaquatetra-μ-acetato-diruthenium(II,III) hexa-fluorido-phosphate starting material. The product rapidly precipated and crystals were grown from 1,2-dichloro-ethane. The 1,2-dichloro-ethane mol-ecule of solvation exhibits disorder with two different orientations [occupancy ratio 0.51 (6):0.49 (6)]. All three parts, the cation, the anion and the disordered solvent mol-ecule lie on crystallographic inversion centers. The Ru-Ru bond length of 2.2702 (6) Å fits nicely into the range seen for similar complexes and correlates well with the reduction potential of the complex and donor strength of the axial ligand, 3-cyano-pyridine, as postulated in a previous study [Vamvounis et al. (2000 ▶). Inorg. Chim. Acta, 305, 87-98]. The 3-cyano-pyridine ligands orient themselves in an anti configuration with respect to each other and the Ru-Ru-N angle [174.27 (7)°] is close to being linear.

Recognizing and stabilizing miR-21 by chiral ruthenium(II) complexes.

Project description:MiR-21, a non-coding miRNA with 22 nucleotides, plays an important part in the proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of tumor cells. The present study demonstrates that isomers of chiral ruthenium(II) complexes with alkynes (?-1 and ?-1) were synthesized by Songogashira coupling reaction by using microwave-assisted synthetic technology. The isomers can recognize and stabilize miR-21, with the ?-isomer showing a stronger binding capacity than the ?-isomer. Further studies showed that both isomers can be uptaken by MDA-MB-231 cells and enriched in the nucleus. Treatment with the ?-/?-isomer downregulated the expression of miR-21. In a word, the development of chiral ruthenium(II) complexes act as potential inhibitors against tumor cells by recognizing, stabilizing, and regulating the expression of miR-21.

The two Ru atoms are connected into binuclear complexes via two bridging carbonyl groups, forming four-membered rings which are located on centres of inversion. The Ru-Ru distance of 2.7483?(11)?Å corresponds to a single bond. The two carbonyl groups in these binuclear complexes are trans-oriented.

<i>In vivo</i> study and thermodynamic investigation of two lanthanum complexes, La(dpp)<sub>3</sub> and La(XT), for the treatment of bone resorption disorders.

Project description:Bone density diseases such as osteoporosis affect a significant number of people worldwide. Lanthanide ions are functional mimics of calcium ions, able to substitute for Ca2+ in the bone mineral component, hydroxyapatite (HAP). Bone undergoes a continuous remodelling cycle and lanthanides can affect this cycle, exerting a positive influence on bone mineral. We have been engaged in efforts to find new lanthanide containing complexes as active agents for treatment of these diseases and have identified two lead compounds, 3-hydroxy-1,2-dimethylpyridin-4(1H)-one (Hdpp) and a phosphinate-EDTA derivative, bis[[bis(carboxymethyl)amino]-methyl]phosphinate (H5XT). In this paper, we report in vivo data for the first time for the two lead compounds. The pharmacokinetics of La(dpp)3 suggest the complex is rapidly cleared from plasma. We demonstrate that La3+ accumulates in the bone following IV dose of either La(dpp)3 or La(XT) and we have investigated the influence of each chelating ligand on the incorporation of La3+ into HAP using ITC and HAP-binding studies.

Hydrotalcite framework stabilized ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru/HTaL): efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the methanolysis of ammonia-borane.

Project description:Ruthenium nanoparticles stabilized by a hydrotalcite framework (Ru/HTaL) were prepared by following a 2-step procedure comprising a wet-impregnation of ruthenium(III) chloride precatalyst on the surface of HTaL followed by an ammonia-borane (NH3BH3) reduction of precatalyst on the HTaL surface all at room temperature. The characterization of Ru/HTaL was done by using various spectroscopic and visualization methods including ICP-OES, P-XRD, FTIR, 11B NMR, XPS, BFTEM, and HRTEM. The sum of the results gained from these analyses has revealed the formation of well-dispersed and highly crystalline ruthenium nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 1.27 ±0.8 nm on HTaL surface. The catalytic performance of Ru/HTaL in terms of activity, selectivity, and stability was investigated in the methanolysis of ammonia-borane (NH3BH3 , AB), which has been considered as one of the most promising chemical hydrogen storage materials. It was found that Ru/HTaL can catalyse methanolysis of AB effectively with an initial turnover frequency (TOF) value of 392.77 min-1 at conversion (>95%) even at room temperature. Moreover, the catalytic stability tests of Ru/HTaL in AB methanolysis showed that Ru/HTaL acts as a highly stable and reusable heterogeneous catalyst in this reaction by preserving more than 95% of its initial activity even at the 5th recycle.

[Ru(bpy)2(NO)SO3](PF6), a Nitric Oxide Donating Ruthenium Complex, Reduces Gout Arthritis in Mice.

Project description:Monosodium urate crystals (MSU) deposition induces articular inflammation known as gout. This disease is characterized by intense articular inflammation and pain by mechanisms involving the activation of the transcription factor NFκB and inflammasome resulting in the production of cytokines and oxidative stress. Despite evidence that MSU induces iNOS expression, there is no evidence on the effect of nitric oxide (NO) donors in gout. Thus, the present study evaluated the effect of the ruthenium complex donor of NO {[Ru(bpy)2(NO)SO3](PF6)} (complex I) in gout arthritis. Complex I inhibited in a dose-dependent manner MSU-induced hypersensitivity to mechanical stimulation, edema and leukocyte recruitment. These effects were corroborated by a decrease of histological inflammation score and recruitment of Lysm-eGFP+ cells. Mechanistically, complex I inhibited MSU-induced mechanical hypersensitivity and joint edema by triggering the cGMP/PKG/ATP-sensitive K (+) channels signaling pathway. Complex I inhibited MSU-induced oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cytokine production in the knee joint. These data were supported by the observation that complex I inhibited MSU-induced NFκB activation, and IL-1β expression and production. Complex I also inhibited MSU-induced activation of pro-IL-1β processing. Concluding, the present data, to our knowledge, is the first evidence that a NO donating ruthenium complex inhibits MSU-induced articular inflammation and pain. Further, complex I targets the main physiopathological mechanisms of gout arthritis. Therefore, it is envisaged that complex I and other NO donors have therapeutic potential that deserves further investigation.
