Project description:As Bulgaria transitions away from Global Fund grant, robust estimates of the comparative impact of the various response strategies under consideration are needed to ensure sustained effectiveness of the tuberculosis (TB) programme. We tailored an established mathematical model for TB control to the epidemic in Bulgaria to project the likely outcomes of seven intervention scenarios. Under existing programmatic conditions projected forward, the country's targets for achieving TB elimination in the coming decades will not be achieved. No interventions under consideration were predicted to accelerate the baseline projected reduction in epidemiological indicators significantly. Discontinuation of the 'Open Doors' program and activities of non-governmental organisations would result in a marked exacerbation of the epidemic (increasing incidence in 2035 by 6-8% relative to baseline conditions projected forward). Changing to a short course regimen for multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) would substantially decrease MDR-TB mortality (by 21.6% in 2035 relative to baseline conditions projected forward). Changing to ambulatory care for eligible patients would not affect TB burden but would be markedly cost-saving. In conclusion, Bulgaria faces important challenges in transitioning to a primarily domestically-financed TB programme. The country should consider maintaining currently effective programs and shifting towards ambulatory care to ensure program sustainability.

Project description:This study empirically examines the relation between institutional distance (ID) and Turkey's outward foreign direct investment (TODI). The empirical results use panel data from 2002 to 2016 to show that TODI is attracted to countries with better institutional quality. We also find that host country political stability, government effectiveness, control of corruption, and rule of law attract TODI. We also document that TODI is positively related to cultural distance (CD) and ID is not moderated by CD.

Project description:Deeply investigating the relationship between governance, financial development, and outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) is beneficial to formulating effective policies to accelerate Chinese firms' pace of overseas expansion. Based on the theoretical mechanism analysis, this paper empirically analyzes the impact of Asian governance and financial development on China's OFDI using the panel data of 37 Asian countries from 2003 to 2017. The results show that the host country governance has a negative and statistically significant impact on China's direct investment in Asia. The conclusion remains valid even after overcoming the interference of endogenous and economic cycle fluctuations. Moreover, using the mediating effect model, we find that financial development is an important channel through which host country governance affects China's OFDI. In further discussion, the findings suggest that with the scale of OFDI expanding, the role of governance takes an inverted "U" shape, and the "Belt and Road" initiative (BRI) weakens the negative impact of governance quality on China's OFDI. Furthermore, governance has shown more remarkable restraint on China's OFDI in neighboring, coastal, and low-income countries in the heterogeneity test. From the perspective of host country governance, this paper provides more specific guidance to formulate China's direct investment policy in Asia.

Project description:The present work reassesses the impact of good governance and democracy on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in oil-abundant countries. To this end, we estimate the effect of host countries' institutions on greenfield FDI, using a gravity equation for a dataset that covers 182 countries during 2003-2012. Our findings confirm that compliance to rule of law, lack of corruption, political stability and democracy could boost new FDI links through the extensive margin. Our results could not rule out the "oil curse", meaning that oil producers attract fewer new greenfield projects than similar countries without oil. Unlike other studies, we show that the impact of institutions is not necessarily undermined by the presence of natural resources.

Project description:This paper investigates how the economic performance of four economies with floating exchange rates is affected by shocks in domestic and US economic policy uncertainty. We estimate a Bayesian VAR model describing the dynamics of ten local and US variables for each of the four countries and use it to evaluate the response of the system to structural shocks. The analysis reveals that increased economic uncertainty in the US reduces industrial output in all the countries analysed, while the effect of increased domestic uncertainty varies across the economies. A key finding concerns the role of the exchange rate. Whereas the real effective exchange rate amplifies the effect of uncertainty shocks in the US, it typically helps absorb shocks in the open economies. This asymmetry may reflect the role of the US as a safe haven in times of increased uncertainty. Project description:Despite the significance attached to foreign direct investment (FDI) by Multinational enterprises (MNEs), there are is no comprehensive review of the FDI literature. Moreover, those that have been published, focus on subsets of FDI. This review systematically examines the empirical as well as theoretical research on FDI through an analysis of 500 articles published during the last five decades. Theoretical models, methods, context, and contributions to scholarship were reviewed. We strive to highlight the key theories, paradigms, and articles and provide directions for future research. We conclude that FDI has evolved as the most significant area of international business.

Project description:Based on the data of China's outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) in energy sector to 133 countries from 2005 to 2014, this paper uses a gravity model to investigate the impact of "intimate" relations on China's OFDI locations in energy sector. We find that the "intimate" relations have significant effects on China's OFDI locations in energy sector, namely: bilateral senior leaders' visits, institutional distance, genetic distance, and immigration. Holding other factors fixed, for each one more bilateral senior leaders' visit between China and the host country, China's OFDI in energy sector for the host country will increase by 5.44%. If the genetic distance from China and host country increases by 1%, China's OFDI in energy sector will fall by 1.69%. For every 1% increase in the institutional distance between China and host country, China's energy OFDI will decrease by 1.09%. For every 1% increase in a country's immigration to China, China's energy OFDI will increase by 0.46%. Further, after distinguishing developed and developing countries, we find that compared with developed countries, "intimate" relations have greater impacts on China's energy OFDI in developing countries. Finally, based on the dominance analysis, considering China's "intimate" relations with countries along the "Belt and Road" and current locations of China's OFDI, we find that China should further expand energy investment in countries along the "Belt and Road".

Project description:This paper describes the clinical presentation, diagnostic imaging findings and outcome in four cats with confirmed joint-associated tuberculosis. The cats were 2-6 years of age, and immune competent. Three cases had tuberculosis affecting only one joint, whereas one case had at least three joints affected. Two cases were caused by Mycobacterium bovis, and the other two were caused by Mycobacterium microti. Radiological findings included osteolysis, periosteal reaction and associated soft tissue swelling. Two cases were euthanased and two cases responded well to amputation and follow-on antibiotic therapy.To our knowledge, this is the first publication of a series of cats with joint-associated tuberculosis. Although tuberculosis is not common, a high degree of suspicion is needed to avoid delayed diagnosis. This case series highlights the importance of considering mycobacterial disease as a differential for joint disease in cats.
