Project description:Recently, there has been interest in the relationship between mental health and air pollution; however, the results are inconsistent and the contribution of foreign direct investment (FDI) has received little attention. This article studies the effects of air pollution on mental health and the moderating role of FDI based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data in 2015 and 2018 applying the fixed effects panel regression approach and the threshold model. The results show that mental health is adversely affected by air pollution, especially PM2.5, PM10, sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Second, FDI has an alleviating influence on the negative relationship. Third, the effects of air pollution and FDI are heterogeneous based on regional characteristics, including location, medical resource and investment in science and technology, and individual characteristics covering education level, age, income, and physical health. Finally, the threshold effects show that FDI has a moderating effect when it is >1,745.59 million renminbi (RMB). There are only 11.19% of cities exceeding the threshold value in China. When the value of air quality index (AQI) exceeds 92.79, air pollution is more harmful to mental health. Government should actively introduce high-quality FDI at the effective level and control air pollution to improve mental health.

Project description:As Bulgaria transitions away from Global Fund grant, robust estimates of the comparative impact of the various response strategies under consideration are needed to ensure sustained effectiveness of the tuberculosis (TB) programme. We tailored an established mathematical model for TB control to the epidemic in Bulgaria to project the likely outcomes of seven intervention scenarios. Under existing programmatic conditions projected forward, the country's targets for achieving TB elimination in the coming decades will not be achieved. No interventions under consideration were predicted to accelerate the baseline projected reduction in epidemiological indicators significantly. Discontinuation of the 'Open Doors' program and activities of non-governmental organisations would result in a marked exacerbation of the epidemic (increasing incidence in 2035 by 6-8% relative to baseline conditions projected forward). Changing to a short course regimen for multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) would substantially decrease MDR-TB mortality (by 21.6% in 2035 relative to baseline conditions projected forward). Changing to ambulatory care for eligible patients would not affect TB burden but would be markedly cost-saving. In conclusion, Bulgaria faces important challenges in transitioning to a primarily domestically-financed TB programme. The country should consider maintaining currently effective programs and shifting towards ambulatory care to ensure program sustainability.

Project description:This study empirically examines the relation between institutional distance (ID) and Turkey's outward foreign direct investment (TODI). The empirical results use panel data from 2002 to 2016 to show that TODI is attracted to countries with better institutional quality. We also find that host country political stability, government effectiveness, control of corruption, and rule of law attract TODI. We also document that TODI is positively related to cultural distance (CD) and ID is not moderated by CD.

Project description:Deeply investigating the relationship between governance, financial development, and outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) is beneficial to formulating effective policies to accelerate Chinese firms' pace of overseas expansion. Based on the theoretical mechanism analysis, this paper empirically analyzes the impact of Asian governance and financial development on China's OFDI using the panel data of 37 Asian countries from 2003 to 2017. The results show that the host country governance has a negative and statistically significant impact on China's direct investment in Asia. The conclusion remains valid even after overcoming the interference of endogenous and economic cycle fluctuations. Moreover, using the mediating effect model, we find that financial development is an important channel through which host country governance affects China's OFDI. In further discussion, the findings suggest that with the scale of OFDI expanding, the role of governance takes an inverted "U" shape, and the "Belt and Road" initiative (BRI) weakens the negative impact of governance quality on China's OFDI. Furthermore, governance has shown more remarkable restraint on China's OFDI in neighboring, coastal, and low-income countries in the heterogeneity test. From the perspective of host country governance, this paper provides more specific guidance to formulate China's direct investment policy in Asia.

Project description:This study deploys newly available data to examine the exposure of multinational companies' overseas investments to physical climate risks. Globally, foreign investments are significantly exposed to lower physical climate risks, compared with local firms across countries. Within countries however, the differences of physical climate risks between foreign and local facilities are small. We also examine China, as it is fast becoming one of the largest sources of outward foreign investment across the globe. We find that foreign direct investment from China is significantly more exposed to water stress, floods, hurricanes and typhoon risks across countries, compared with other foreign facilities. Within host countries however, once again the physical climate risks of Chinese overseas facilities are comparable to those of non-Chinese foreign investments.

Project description:Thanks to the great political and economic global openness that Sudan witnessed in late 2020, the USA decided to remove Sudan from the terrorism sponsors designation. The paper seeks to investigate whether Sudan’s removal from the state sponsors of terrorism designation affects foreign direct investment (FDI). Data covered the 1974–2019 period, using a multivariate analysis combining VECM and ARDL models. Evidence reveals that the political and economic global openness headed by the removal of Sudan from state sponsors of terrorism designation, agricultural and oil investment as well as minerals investment opportunities are key variables that attract foreign direct investment in Sudan and affect FDI inflows positively and significantly in the long run. Policymakers should benefit from the global openness opportunities that offer a respectable environment for FDI inflows. Meanwhile, lifting the political and economic restrictions that were imposed, such as the state of a sponsor of terrorism and further economic restrictions, can boost investment in the agriculture, oil, and mineral sectors in the long run by creating some effective policies that are likely to lure foreign direct investment inflows and enhance sustainable economic development. Policymakers should emphasize implementing agriculture, oil, and mineral investment policies that must be accompanied with fundamental infrastructure restructuring policies by reforming the government system through the adoption of effective financial policies to combat corruption. Also, policymakers should develop towards geographic diversification of foreign investment flows to Sudan by focusing on European countries as essential partners given their crucial role in supporting Sudan and the strength of efficient companies in all areas that Sudan needs. Project description:The present work reassesses the impact of good governance and democracy on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in oil-abundant countries. To this end, we estimate the effect of host countries' institutions on greenfield FDI, using a gravity equation for a dataset that covers 182 countries during 2003-2012. Our findings confirm that compliance to rule of law, lack of corruption, political stability and democracy could boost new FDI links through the extensive margin. Our results could not rule out the "oil curse", meaning that oil producers attract fewer new greenfield projects than similar countries without oil. Unlike other studies, we show that the impact of institutions is not necessarily undermined by the presence of natural resources.

Project description:This paper investigates how the economic performance of four economies with floating exchange rates is affected by shocks in domestic and US economic policy uncertainty. We estimate a Bayesian VAR model describing the dynamics of ten local and US variables for each of the four countries and use it to evaluate the response of the system to structural shocks. The analysis reveals that increased economic uncertainty in the US reduces industrial output in all the countries analysed, while the effect of increased domestic uncertainty varies across the economies. A key finding concerns the role of the exchange rate. Whereas the real effective exchange rate amplifies the effect of uncertainty shocks in the US, it typically helps absorb shocks in the open economies. This asymmetry may reflect the role of the US as a safe haven in times of increased uncertainty.
