Fibronectin (FN) forms fibrillar networks coupling cells to the extracellular matrix. The formation of FN fibrils, fibrillogenesis, is a tightly regulated process involving the exposure of cryptic binding sites in individual FN type III (FN-III) repeats presumably exposed by mechanical tension.
