tripropyl-azanium 2,4,6-tris-ulfanyl-idene-cyclo-hexan-1-ide), (C(3)H(7))(3)HN(+)·C(3)H(2)N(3)S(3) (-), one H atom of trithio-cyanuric acid is accepted by tripropyl-amine to form the ammonium ion. Coplanar trithio-cyanurate and tripropyl-ammonium ions [dihedral angle = 82.33?(8)°] form the salt, which is stabilised by various N-H?S and N-H?N contacts.

Project description:In the cation of the title compound C9H14ON(+)·C3H2O3N3 (-), the benzyl-amine C-N bond subtends a dihedral angle of 78.3?(2)° with the phenyl ring. The cyanurate anion is in the usual keto-form and shows an r.m.s. deviation from planarity of 0.010?Å. In the crystal, the cyanurate anions form N-H?O hydrogen-bonded zigzag ribbons along [001]. These ribbons are crosslinked by the organocations via O-H?N and N-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming bilayers parallel to (010) which are held together along [010] by slipped ?-? inter-actions between pairs of cyanurate anions [shortest contact distances C?C = 3.479?(2), O?N = 3.400?(2); centroid-centroid distance= 4.5946?(9)?Å] and between cyanurate and phenyl rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.7924?(12)?Å, ring-ring angle = 11.99?(10)°].

Poly(aryl cyanurate)-Based Thin-Film Composite Nanofiltration Membranes.

Project description:The successful synthesis of poly(aryl cyanurate) nanofiltration membranes via the interfacial polymerization reaction between cyanuric chloride and 1,1,1-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane (TPE), atop a polyethersulfone ultrafiltration support, is demonstrated. The use of cyanuric chloride allows for the formation of a polymer that does not contain hydrolysis-susceptible amide bonds that inherently limit the stability of polyamide nanofiltration membranes. In order to achieve a thin defect-free cross-linked film via interfacial polymerization, a sufficient number of each monomer should react. However, the reactivities of the second and third chloride groups of the cyanuric chloride are moderate. Here, this difficulty is overcome by the high functionality and the high reactivity of TPE. The membranes demonstrate a typical nanofiltration behavior, with a molecular weight cutoff of 400 ± 83 g·mol-1 and a permeance of 1.77 ± 0.18 L·m-2 h-1 bar-1. The following retention behavior Na2SO4 (97.1%) > MgSO4 (92.8%) > NaCl (51.3%) > MgCl2 (32.1%) indicates that the membranes have a negative surface charge. The absence of amide bonds in the membranes was expected to result in superior pH stability as compared to polyamide membranes. However, it was found that under extremely acidic conditions (pH = 1), the performance showed a pronounced decline over the course of 2 months. Under extremely alkaline conditions (pH = 13), after 1 month, the performance was lost. After 2 months of exposure to moderate alkaline conditions (pH = 12), the MgSO4 retention decreased by 14% and the permeance increased by 2.5-fold. This degradation was attributed to the hydrolysis of the aryl cyanurate bond that behaves like an ester bond.

Biocompatible pH-Degradable Functional Capsules Based on Melamine Cyanurate Self-Assembly.

Project description:Development of adaptive self-regulating materials and chemical-biological systems-self-healing, self-regulating, etc.-is an advanced modern trend. The very sensitive pH-controlled functionality of supramolecular assemblies is a very useful tool for chemical and biochemical implementations. However, the assembly process can be tuned by various factors that can be used for both better functionality control and further functionalization such as active species, e.g., drugs and dyes, and encapsulation. Here, the effect of a dye, sodium fluorescein (uranine) (FL), on the formation of a self-assembled melamine cyanurate (M-CA) structure is investigated and calculated with density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics. Interestingly, the dye greatly affects the self-assembly process at early stages from the formation of dimers, trimers, and tetramer to nucleation control. The supramolecular structure disassembly and subsequent release of trapped dye occurred under both high- and low-pH conditions. This system can be used for time-prolonged bacterial staining and development of supramolecular capsules for the system chemistry approach.

Quantifying the effect of polymer blending through molecular modelling of cyanurate polymers.

Project description:Modification of polymer properties by blending is a common practice in the polymer industry. We report here a study of blends of cyanurate polymers by molecular modelling that shows that the final experimentally determined properties can be predicted from first principles modelling to a good degree of accuracy. There is always a compromise between simulation length, accuracy and speed of prediction. A comparison of simulation times shows that 125ps of molecular dynamics simulation at each temperature provides the optimum compromise for models of this size with current technology. This study opens up the possibility of computer aided design of polymer blends with desired physical and mechanical properties.

Signaling ammonium across membranes through an ammonium sensor histidine kinase.

Project description:Sensing and uptake of external ammonium is essential for anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) bacteria, and is typically the domain of the ubiquitous Amt/Rh ammonium transporters. Here, we report on the structure and function of an ammonium sensor/transducer from the anammox bacterium "Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensis" that combines a membrane-integral ammonium transporter domain with a fused histidine kinase. It contains a high-affinity ammonium binding site not present in assimilatory Amt proteins. The levels of phosphorylated histidine in the kinase are coupled to the presence of ammonium, as conformational changes during signal recognition by the Amt module are transduced internally to modulate the kinase activity. The structural analysis of this ammonium sensor by X-ray crystallography and small-angle X-ray-scattering reveals a flexible, bipartite system that recruits a large uptake transporter as a sensory module and modulates its functionality to achieve a mechanistic coupling to a kinase domain in order to trigger downstream signaling events.

Ammonium diphosphitoindate(III).

Project description:The crystal structure of the title compound, NH4[In(HPO3)2], is built up from In(III) cations (site symmetry 3m.) adopting an octa-hedral environment and two different phosphite anions (each with site symmetry 3m.) exhibiting a triangular-pyramidal geometry. Each InO6 octa-hedron shares its six apices with hydrogen phosphite groups. Reciprocally, each HPO3 group shares all its O atoms with three different metal cations, leading to [In(HPO3)2](-) layers which propagate in the ab plane. The ammonium cation likewise has site symmetry 3m.. In the structure, the cations are located between the [In(HPO3)2](-) layers of the host framework. The sheets are held together by hydrogen bonds formed between the NH4 (+) cations and the O atoms of the framework.

Pore mutations in ammonium transporter AMT1 with increased electrogenic ammonium transport activity.

Project description:AMT/Mep ammonium transporters mediate high affinity ammonium/ammonia uptake in bacteria, fungi, and plants. The Arabidopsis AMT1 proteins mediate uptake of the ionic form of ammonium. AMT transport activity is controlled allosterically via a highly conserved cytosolic C terminus that interacts with neighboring subunits in a trimer. The C terminus is thus capable of modulating the conductivity of the pore. To gain insight into the underlying mechanism, pore mutants suppressing the inhibitory effect of mutations in the C-terminal trans-activation domain were characterized. AMT1;1 carrying the mutation Q57H in transmembrane helix I (TMH I) showed increased ammonium uptake but reduced capacity to take up methylammonium. To explore whether the transport mechanism was altered, the AMT1;1-Q57H mutant was expressed in Xenopus oocytes and analyzed electrophysiologically. AMT1;1-Q57H was characterized by increased ammonium-induced and reduced methylammonium-induced currents. AMT1;1-Q57H possesses a 100x lower affinity for ammonium (K(m)) and a 10-fold higher V(max) as compared with the wild type form. To test whether the trans-regulatory mechanism is conserved in archaeal homologs, AfAmt-2 from Archaeoglobus fulgidus was expressed in yeast. The transport function of AfAmt-2 also depends on trans-activation by the C terminus, and mutations in pore-residues corresponding to Q57H of AMT1;1 suppress nonfunctional AfAmt-2 mutants lacking the activating C terminus. Altogether, our data suggest that bacterial and plant AMTs use a conserved allosteric mechanism to control ammonium flux, potentially using a gating mechanism that limits flux to protect against ammonium toxicity.
